James Patterson has a habit of telling half truths regarding Labor’s border enforcement. We found out senate estimates earlier this this year that the LNP’s claim of reduced spending was actually an accounting trick based on overspend in the 2022-23 budget which then made the 2023-24 spend look like a reduction to meet the 4 yearly proposed expenditure. When measured in the normal way, the Albanese government spent $252m more on border enforcement and border management this year than was projected in the Coalition’s last budget, and cumulatively $470m more in the four years to 2025-26. Greg Jennett would do well to do his research to allow him to push back against misinformation. There were reduced aerial surveillance hours influenced by under-resourced aircrews and difficulties operating in remote offshore areas, resulting in increased aircraft maintenance requirements that, in turn, affected aircrew availability. ABF has engaged the service providers to formulate remediation plans to improve aircrew recruitment and retention and address the current decline in aerial surveillance hours. In October head of the Australian Border Force, Michael Outram, said they would probably use Defence assets to supplement their aerial surveillance. In terms of the US alliance, Patterson seems very keen to ensure that Australia not become an integral part of our geographical region that will be the growth engine of the world in the 21st century- the Asia region. He wants to see Australia become the 51st state of the USA and spend untold sums of public money on funding US and UK infrastructure in the ridiculously stupid AUKUS deal.
