I love my 2002 Saab 9-5 I use for 6 months during winter and 2000 Saab 9-3 convertible I use for 6 months during summer. I only tax each for 6 months and service each every other year as they only do under 4000 miles in each 6 months. Both are waxoil undersealed to preserve them for the future. Been driving used saabs for 35 years.

@@lukemallory7832 glad I'm not the only one. My 9-5 has just turned to 112k and the convertible just turned to 57k. The convertible was in storage for a few years further down in Cornwall where I live. I bought it with 52500 verified miles last year for £2,200. I bought the 9-5 with 91000 verified by paperwork for £550. Both 2litre petrol turbos. Best get yours waxoil undersealed if you want to keep them long term. I'm hoping in 10 years+ they might be worth something as well as being daily drivers.

Coming from someone who lives in the south eastern part of the US where cars bake away in the sun, paint fades and headliners drop before 10-15 years of age - if not sooner. I’ve done 7 headliner jobs. I cannot emphasize enough - you want to take a seat or two out, remove all the trim around the headliner, and drop it out. You need to scuff the backerboard down to the fiberglass. You’ll then have to spray the headliner adhesive (I use 3m) on both backerboard and the new material and join them once tacky. Cut out the holes and reinstall in car. It’ll last another 20 years and will do better... install while board in the car is going to be a nightmare - dried up dust from the foam, glue residue on all the trim while fitting, cutting the holes, craining your neck... anyways this Volvo is such a neat car. Love the old box Volvo’s. Keep up the great content

Your 740's engine sounds exactly how it should, in my opinion; my 1990 740 estate's B200F unit sounds the same. It has done nearly 250,000 miles without anything other than routine servicing being needed and has been deemed very healthy by several fellow Volvo people :)

yes but does it not sound like it had a bit of a valve tick when he reversed out of the drive? correct me if i am wrong, the typical rubber hats under the valve shims usually gets hard or beaten flatt if the car sits for a long time or if it has a lot of miles, not harmful in any way oust the typical volvo ticking, i hear it in my 240 and it's so loud i need to do something about it..

Aahhh, the nostalgia!! Dad had pretty much the identical car. A silver 740 GL, before he swapped it for a 940 GLE which I later inherited. Just looking at the dashboard and listening to the engine note takes me right back to my Volvo days in the mid 90s.

In an older Volvo you don't drive over speed bumps, you batter them into submission... The original Ford Ka was a very interesting idea and design, it's just a shame that a lot of people find them rather, or very, uncomfortable, and the do rust in a very '70s Ford way... Your auxiliary belt/s on the Volvo are probably very old and have got rather polished over time...

We had an independent motor factors like that, the front and the back was stacked floor to ceiling with part's nothing marked or labelled but he knew what it looked like and what ever you wanted he had, all from memory, it was the time when batteries were sealed around the top and he used to strip them, replace any plate's refill with acid, sell for less than half price with 6 month guarantee, what the hell happened they call this progress!!

The first time I heard about the Volvo 740/760 was in what car magazine in 1984. A group test between a 760 turbo against a merc s class, BMW 7 series jaguar xj6. Can't remember the other cars in the group test and the verdict. But it stood out for me the Volvo, for its trans Atlantic styling 4 cylinder turbo engine against 6 cylinder cars. Styling is objective, and if the styling is considered ugly by most people. You can't see it from the inside when your driving it.

Love an original Ka. I remember delivering a new Skoda Fabia to Inverness when the scrappage scheme was going on and picking up the Ford Ka trade in. It had seen life and I wasn't looking forward to the 130 mile drive back to Dundee but it was so much fun. Revvy little engine and sublime handling. I kept turning off the A9 onto the twistier old road just to find more corners to chuck it round. Loved the styling as well. It looked different but still had tonnes of cabin space. The dark metallic purple, Belladonna, really suited it too.

Great stuff just love all classic Volvo work- horses as the Swedish guys call them. Interesting commentary on the traffic volume about the same as my locality Derby City today quite right definitely more people and traffic in general out and about today, I am a front-line business owner operating seven days a week since lock down but I can understand why people are going a little stir crazy now and want to do a drive . Volvo in Sweden is still open alongside guys in Derby who are independent Volvo/Saab specialist's remained open throughout this lock down unlike Volvo UK closed so no parts, service, or sales the latter one I can understand but the service and parts is not good it has unless you are in with an independent garage left everyone up a gum tree. Stay safe and keep making the videos.

Watching with a smile in Walderslade just a few hundred yards away from you. When you said you were going to drop the parcel off I thought you would go about 100yards further to Admirals Walk where the convenience shop takes in for Hermes. Didn't know of the petrol station set-up. I usually shop at Asda so thanks for showing the queue! Having had a 240 I recognise a lot of the sounds and happenings when starting. The big wobble you get probably down to soft/tired/damaged engine and transmission mounts. Worth a look. Enjoy your party. May Day combined with 75 Ann of VE Day.

You’ve got to love an old boxy Volvo, got an 850 T5 that’s been sat outside collecting mud and dust for the past five months but I’d love a go in something more “boring” like a big old 940. Oh and the KA is a lovely little thing to rag around in, always on the limiter but always under the speed limit. My mum had an 02 plate KA luxury, hated that thing while she had it but miss it now, it unfortunately fell to the rust gremlins a few years back and the underside was pretty much shot - really quirky little things and I’d love a SportKA. About the petrol filler location: Volvo used the same picture in all their models for a long time, it's the location of the gauge in the cluster that indicates the location of the filler. In this case the fuel gauge is the most left gauge in the cluster, so the filler is on the left hand side of the car. :)

Really enjoy the shopping trip videos Matt :) Really happy to hear your appreciation for the MK1 Ford KA too. I have a 2003 base spec car (in picture). standard other than Ford Accessories alloys and cd player. It's in really good condition and you're welcome to do a test on it one day. People forget how shocking this design was at launch as it introduced Fords new edge design language. Richard Parry-Jones who I'm sure you're aware is a legend was head of small car engineering at Ford when the KA and MK4 Fiesta were developed. Hence patchy rust proofing but Richard felt fitting passive rear wheel steering to the KA was more important :) Yes they rust if neglected but I've seen plenty of S-Type Jags, E39 BM's and E Class Mercs from the early 2000's rust just as badly if neglected. If looked after they're fine but they're seen as cheap disposable street furniture and rarely looked after. Most importantly they handle so well. Sorry to be one of the ones saying check the pump symbol for knowing which side the filler cap is on, but it has been true for every car I have filled up, except for commercial vehicles. Maybe its a more recent, as in after 2000-ish, standard? I haven filled up many cars older than that I must admit..

Your old 740 seems to train along nicely, doesn't seem that noisy so it'll be an even nicer place to sit when the carpets are back in. Re: Ford KA. They will become a classic simply based on the fact they have the blue oval badge on them. I can't take them seriously, and cannot believe a car sold in the new millennium was still fitted with an engine from the Anglia, albeit dressed up with a plastic cover and called something else. The new model is far better and that's because it's basically a Fiat 500 with a Ford badge on 🇮🇹👍

The original headliner was one cake of sound isolation and outer embossed vinyl, mostly installed by taking out the rear or front window, I've never seen one with it ripped out like that. Volvo 740 often has a crack across the font window where the defroster air hits the windshield, often initiated with a small "stone star", the window has thinner glass sheets than older models and the very good heating can combined rip the outer layer apart in cold weather. So having a good windshield is a big plus. But the car isn't as stabilised by the windshield as many others are so as long as it isn't in the way of the driver it often passed MOT in Sweden anyway with just a notion: get that fixed!

Had you taken the third exit at the roundabout instead of the second into Lordswood it would have taken you through a little country lane and eventually into Hempstead Valley. Little further along some b roads and back down the hill you would come out by the harvester near the Running Hourse Roundabout.

I don't think the Volvo sounds loud. It sounds like a 740 always did. There is a method to driving a higher riding wallowy car which is quite smooth once you perfect it. I'm finding it tricky to get out and drive between us. Despite the fact I'm not working at home I can't drive there as I'm working at the corner shop at the moment and it's less than 100m away. I've been going to Tesco once a week when it's quiet to get a few bits and keep my battery charged. We have one car that's not been driven since it's MOT about a week or 2 before the lockdown except to get the bins out and it's suffering a little now.

Not sure where you got the prancing moose stickers from (kudos, BTW) but Auslander Volvo (who sells those, and others) has a nice replacement head unit for Volvo 200 & 700 models. Adds modern functionality (Bluetooth, etc.) without looking out of place in the dash. Regarding the Ka, that was one of the cars I looked at brand new for a first car (showing my age!) but I was very disappointed when I test drove it. It felt slow, sounded tinny and very much reminded me of my brother's '88 Escort. In short, it was clearly old technology. I was far more impressed with the Daewoo Matiz I tested on the same day, and that should tell you everything you need to know! But in the end, I bought a Renault Clio (which has probably just voided my opinion!)

@@angrymuffinsb Pre September 2002 Endura E's were very tappy if not regularly adjusted, the latter revised Duratecs fine if maintained. Reasonable torque but not keen on being revved. They do like to rust but a lot of that is down to neglect and little worse for rot than an E39 5-series BMW for example. Plenty of E39s, S-Type Jags and W201 E-Class's have rusted just as badly if neglected.

@@angrymuffinsb Yep that's true mine had a new rear quarter panel ect at the first sign of rot there. That cost £550 which in terms of body repairs isn't too bad, but with the cars being worth so little very few people will repair them. Much cheaper than a BMW E46 rear subframe for example. And to be fair in every other way they're so cheap to repair even with genuine Ford parts. Yep Alfas are another example. All cars have their problems. I've owned French cars that were lovely other than the electrics!

Long time Volvo lover here. The handling appears like you simply need new strut inserts up front and new dampers in the back. I have never driven one with the mechanical fuel injection. Our 81 245 had a single side draught Zenith. My 90 has Bosch 2.4 electronic fuel injection on the 2.3 litre. That 2 litre seems sluggish in the acceleration compared even to the 2.1 in the 81. The 2.3 is pretty good considering I am on the dual carriageway daily. Even with the automatic in Arthur, acceleration is more than adequate, and do is the fuel economy. I would definitely check the state of the panhard rod bushings. That can make a big difference in corners as it keeps the axle located side to side. I should note Arthur is coming up on 400,000 miles, so almost dye for the next cam belt change.

Furious Driving is an apt name, your driving is furiously quick around bends and roundabouts, you would have failed at the Chauffeur driving school I attended, ones passenger had to be able to pour a drink to the top of the glass and place it on the pull down table for it to remain there with not a drop spilled or the glass sliding for at least an hours drive. That was in an aged Roller with cart springs and a crash gearbox. A totally different driving skill to the one I was taught at the Met Police school at Hendon. Going out for milk and bread, use your local Milkman, mine is a godsend during this lockdown for things that are needed often as supermarket delivery slots are scarce. Going out to mail a parcel, the Irish Post Office will collect outgoing mail if one leaves a note in the window for him/her that there is mail to go during this time. Stay safe.

They sound a bit tinny as they have little sound deadening but they scored a respectable 3 stars in contemporary ncap test no worse than the MK4 Fiesta it's based on. First city car to have telescopic battering rams for head on collision too and seatbelts tuned to tense up as the airbag inflates. By todays standards it's nothing I admit but for the time it was pretty good for a city car. Remember it was launched in 1996, the Rover Metro was still on sale!
