To enable my full inbound train to clear the yard throat, I have added a small extension to the main line. #hoswitchinglayout #modelrailroadoperations #hoshelflayout #paulb #newenglandindustrialdivision #@hartfordwhaler

fantastic layout. my dad was an engineer on the old new haven , then penn central and retired from conrail. he took me to the opening day of the p&w in woonsocket r.i.. i grew up in pawtucket and really enjoyed watching them switch out industries on the ind, hwy. back then. i really enjoy your vids. brings back memories

Thanks Ed. So glad you like the videos. Very cool that your dad was an engineer. Was always my dream job as a kid but that never happened so I have a layout! I used to go down to the tracks in hartford CT as a kid and watch the early days of Conrail and Amtrak.

Time for me to attempt to be a bad influence... If you're going to expand onto the edge of that metal shelf, why not just go right along the full back side of it so you have a long enough cassette to actually park a full interchange train that way you could incorporate a full interchange into your ops? Pretty neat either way though!

Nice try! Ain’t happening with all the other stuff I have in my garage. I’m happy with just this added 2’.

Hey Paul, Love your layout and videos. Just a thought - As many layouts are oriented west to east, this puts the operator south looking north with the sun lighting the layout from behind him/her. In order to keep the crew and engineer on the sunny side, especially during the winter, many prototype yards have their locomotives facing east, again, putting crews in the sun. So, depending on your yard's geographic orientation - you might consider having your locomotives facing to the right with their crews always visible to you. Phil

Interesting. I did not know that about yard orientation. My geography is somewhere between CT, RI and MA. Or a combination of. In the northeast, trains mostly run northeast or southwest. Some cut across of course and go east to west. The way my layout is set up, the main comes from the south (southwest) and heads north-northeast. I do know the old NH yard (Cedar Hill) was (is) a north facing yard. I can’t really change locomotive direction since they are heading north on my diorama so they wouldn’t likely be going “backward” on the main.

Fantastic shelf layout, and that extension enables more operational options. Now I just need to build my little switching layout. * subscribed *

Always a good day and a good feeling when you can lay down more track. Wondering what is the progress on the fence you were going to put up between the Main and the Yard?
@HartfordWhaler3 ай бұрын
Good question. The fence is 1/3 built on the work bench. It’ll happen - I just got distracted :) Thanks for watching and stay tuned for the fence update!

Is it OK to use your work and page in a podcast I'm doing on shelf layouts?

Please do. Let me know if you need anything from me. Thanks for featuring my layout!

Hey mate,, love it it looks good. Quick question - could you bring your turnout closer to your existing layout ?? it would definitely add a few more cars to the extension , like it tho loox good. More head scratching moments coming your way.
@HartfordWhaler3 ай бұрын
I was sort of hoping nobody asked that because it’s been on my mind. In fact, I was in the garage last night looking at that very possibility. Short answer is, yes it can be done and would probably be better. I’d just have to align the end of the turnout with the joint between the layout and the extension in case I ever needed to remove it. Stay tuned.

Ok, out in the garage now moving the switch back. I’ll make sure I blame you when I post the video update :) Actually, it’ll be much better this way. Thanks for the push.

Thank you! It was a gamble, but I think it’ll pay off.

Good addition. Especially with the straight off the switch!

Thank you! I did move the switch back a bit onto the main layout just to give a little more length to the siding.
