I really enjoyed this drama. I think LGX and ZLY have fantastic chemistry. They are absolutely the correct age to play these characters and they did so perfectly. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful. CGI quality is high. The OST is vastly engaging. One of the best xianxia made in recent years that closely followed the source material. I usually agree with avenues reviews but not so this time around. Each person should make their own decision on watching this drama.

What I actually like about this is that I’m watching mature people on the screen. He actually looks like he could lift her convincingly. 😅 Both leads seem to be mature and straightforward which is a good change. Their interactions hooked me even though some say that it’s not that interesting. I love them together.

Oh AvenueX, lol I think this is the most enjoyable fantasy drama so far this year. It is so nice to have a good female lead. The male lead is a God, and unlike you, I have no preconceived notions on what he should look and act like. In fact, I like that he is so bored and lazy that he just slowly strolls to battles. He is obviously unhappy in his lonely Godhood. Could they have spiced the script up a little? Of course, but I am really happy with this drama.

The actor was PERFECT for the role, even when he was a 'sickly' mortal. He isn't your normal 'mortal', now isn't he, so of course he's not going to look like a sickly human. Plus he takes medicine on a daily basis. And no, he doesn't have to look like a 'skinny tree' in order for us to believe he is the highest immortal. WTF! Do you think only tall anorexic actors can play that role then? The actor is actually thin, but just not anorexic thin. He looks manly and elegant, how I picture an immortal god to look like, not like an anorexic teenager. So I totally disagree with you on that. Also isn't the ACTING more important than the LOOKS? I and many other people who have been following the drama think that Lin Geng Xin he has the acting and the right looks for the role,

i will say avenuex was a bit too harsh with this drama review. shen li would definitely be up there compared to the recent xianxias that have been lacking. i was waiting for her to mention the drama's merits like the amazing soundtracks or chemistry between the leads but this review just felt like a hate rant, not to mention the ageism which throws me off

I really like this drama in a sense that it is a completely good in all aspects of fantasy drama making. 1. pretty people with decent acting 2.good taste costume 3.good script writing with no unnecessary scene 4. tasteful graphic design. lastly that I think it's new for the chinese drama land is the kind of b-roll scene. but it's a pretty and quite scene with no word or description but it always convey meaning. (if it's done badly, people will call it a bad music video). This is all my 2cents.

Her opinion is nothing short of destructive criticism. She is giving me off this "hard to please persona". Its not that the dramas and or artists were bad. Its just that she has a different taste and preferences compared to the millions of people who loved the dramas and the artists. As the saying goes: "you cant please everybody" including her. This is one of the most entertaining cdrama so far. The lead characters are mature and that is quite refreshing, when all we see nowadays are young kids acting on screen like headless chickens. ZYL and LGX are just perfect for their roles in this show. To say they’re too old came off a bit agist. I really hope you will give it another try with this drama and watch it with a more objective eye.

I have avoided this Xianxia genre forever but thanks to being a fan of this CP, I did check it out. Surprisingly, I am thoroughly enjoying the show. Since most Xianxia have the same stories, I am very happy with just this one and will not be watching anymore of this genre. I do have to disagree on this: LGX being too old or too bulky for his character. His look screams Tolkien Elf from Lord of the Rings. In some shots he looks like the Asian Orlando Bloom playing Legolas. I thought he was perfectly cast as the last ancient God. His turtle like nature contributes to his character quite well. lol Don't get me started on the chemistry LGX and ZLY has. They are good/beautiful together. Period. Yes, the story is nothing new but for a first time viewer of this genre, its somewhat impressive.

That was exactly the point of this drama, AvenueX. The High God's logic was hard to understand. The ML thought that the High God's way conveyed no sense, and he decided/declared to fight against it. And he did! That's what I really like about this drama. This is so much different from other xianxia dramas I have watched.

The AvenueX review is overly harsh and critical, but I respect that people can have opinions. I hope viewers give The Legend of Shen Li a try and form their own opinions.

Love it! The way they display the fl inner strength and vulnerability was perfect. Sometimes ppl think a strong woman can only be strong. But in this show, they showed her being a warrior, leader, and a woman,a not afraid of showing her softer, more vulnerable side with a really man who understood that she could be both strong and soft. And he was there to support her, regardless of what she needed. He was a partner in battle and a shoulder to cry on with no judgement. Just a man and woman in love. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Haha somehow expected this rant but i truly enjoyed the drama. I dont find the leads old - in fact i find their maturity and grounded feel more fitting than younger actors and actresses because of the type of lead characters. LGX has stature as an ancient high god so cant imagine any skinny guy doing it. At least in this drama both leads are around the same age so look compatible. I still having trouble wrapping my head around yang mi and gong jun pairing in that fox spirit matchmaker… Im also thankful the drama is faithful to the novel and not adding stupid nonsense plots though the pace is indeed slow. But it’s fine, life is rushed enough, taking my time to watch and just enjoy the slowburn and humour.

Yes...I could have used less blurring it's true, but it didn't pull me out of my enjoyment of the show. The plot might be been a little predictable at times, but the characters, chemistry, music, scenery and costumes where all simply stunning!!! And yes, I also loved have more mature leads. I suspect it's what let them get away with *so* much of the craziness they did on scene, that I've almost never seen done in a C-Drama... or at least not all together.🤣🤣🤣😍🥰😍

Oh well, I am enjoying Shen Li very much. The acting is much better than any dramas nowadays. The cgi is top notch. The storyline is very entertaining with all the jokes and comedy here and there. I really enjoy the fighting movement of Zhao Liying. It is really beautiful, firm, and very heroic full of energy. Nobody moves like her. This is a good quality production worth to watch. Your criticism on this drama is on trivial things that do not make a drama a bad one. I am not a crazy fan of any actors but there are just too many dramas nowadays with lack of quality, just good looking young actors on screen with minimum acting skills. It’s like watching their face not the characters

I agree, it is so far a decent and enjoyable drama. On this occasion, I very much disagree with Avenue X. She does not like xianxia as a style so I'm not sure why she's reviewing the drama (well, besides the fact it was a major and highly anticipated production). I do not think the criticisms are fair here, I started watching many xianxia dramas, and the poor quality did not make me hesitate in dropping them. This is not the case here.

I love this drama... and I don't like Xian Xia period... Both leads are great and I am not a fan of either of them but both did really really well. The entire production was top notch, none of the angst of some of the other usual works, none of the silly cgi that is overdone. All the scenes including intimate ones, build up, comedy are brilliant. Drama of the year for me. And no the male lead is not bulky. He is not waffle thin like some other actors but he played the role superably. And they are NOT OLD. You do not know what you are talking about.

I haven't read the book but what I can't understand is when someone criticizes a drama for being a certain way when the drama is following the plot and style of the source material. In my mind this is a positive not a negative. Also, to nitpick tiny details like the black eyeliner, I'm drawn to Shen Li's eyes, they are sad and a little tired looking along with her mussy unkept hair, she isn't a prissy lady she is in charge of an army and think these details help create her character. I'm very much enjoying everything about this drama from You Lan fan girling Shen Li and Xing Zhi to the expected and unexpected plot twists. If you are not watching it give it a try.

Maybe a show where ALL THE MAIN CHARACTERS are underdogs, but band together, to save the day, or eachother would be more interesting ? Or at least something where the male and female lead are EXACTLY matched in power, and NOONE has the upper hand ? Their power depends on the BALANCE of the two, not in OVERTAKING eachother ? I think that in one point you totally contradict yourself. You said that xianxia dramas are repeat themselves, doesn't bring anything new and as result boring. Ok, I agree with that. But then you said that gods must be slim and somewhat ethereal and Lin Geng Xin is nothing like that, so he not qualified to play such role. Mmmm? Aren't light and ethereal gods part of xianxia cliché? Why Ancient god can't be more heavy? Who set the rule? When I saw old depictions of Jade emperor for example, he has somewhat solid figure. ;) So we have something in this drama that not belong to common expectations and it's immediately became subject for criticizing. And then we ask - why xianxia so tropey? Exactly because of such opinions from majority viewers.

Not quite.. Her complaint about LGX not having the proper physical depiction of a god isn't cliche .. To put into perspective, tolkiens middle earth is made up of dwarfs, elves, etc that have distinct and common features about their races.. You can't make a film about elves but clearly put in features of a dwarf.. While it's all made up and fantasy, there are some rules that you can't change because it's too established for that fantasy world.. In this case, the ethereal look of a god or the beauty of an elf or the stocky build of a dwarf.

Someone who went out of their way to be the opposite of what he should be. Not to mention....Gods don't need to be ethereal...Tropes are there to be over turned, upscaled and reinvented. There's no "One LAW!" that says certain types of characters *must* look a certain way. Each media piece gets to define it's own world by itself. It's like saying ShenLi's plump grumpy firebird isn't a real Phoenix, because she doesn't have the long elegant look of a crane crossbred with a bird of prey.

This drama is not the first one with a ML looking this way. And the significant popularity and support gained by the drama showed that many viewers love the way the character was depicted (both in look and in acting skill), one of those viewers is me - as someone watched lots of Xianxia growing up and did indeed read the book the drama based on. Those watching dramas with some random prejudices just limit their own viewing enjoyment imo.

Actually my mention of the book doesn’t relate to AvenueX‘s opinion which seems to base on her view that gods must be slim - and I assume you agree with that. I just mean I read the book and think the ML successfully portrayed an ethereal character with immense power, which is much much more than just by looking thin. Books are based on ancient legends and my reading of both don’t give me the impression that gods must be thin, in fact I have always believed that gods can be whatever they want - it’s the way they carry themselves, the air around them, so to speak, that made them gods. But yes you have your opinion I have mine, we just have to agree to disagree. I didn’t mean discriminate anything, just meant those 2 aspects are like apples and oranges and not comparable. The elves and drawves in Tolkien‘s universe were depicted extensively in his writings and drawings, with consistent source materials and clear cut features. And as far as as I know there’s been different interpretations of them too but that’s another story. The xianxia‘s depiction of gods is much vaguer, more varied and much left to readers‘ imagination. Therefore the ML‘s interpretation of his character is not beyond the source material and so far has been widely applauded by a large audience.

I actually find LGX’s physique perfect to play an all powerful ancient god. He stands out in a sea of little boys and he looks like he can get things handled if need be. With a powerful woman like Shen Li, we need a powerful LOOKING ML. The chemistry is off the charts and I do love this story of forbidden love.

Have to say this is one of the best if not THE BEST period fantasy drama in recent years!!! The chemistry, the music the CGI just phenomenal. Both main characters play their role so well that you actually believe and got sucked in their storyline. I love how the build of the male lead makes you believe that he is a powerful god that the story depicts he is. Their mature relationship and understandings just give a very refreshing touch to the drama. I wish I could be at that little house in the human realm watching their daily life 😊😊😊

I've been watching Avenue X for 6 years, and this video is the first time I realized how prejudiced she is. Of course she can say that it's her personal and subjective opinion, but what she said in this video is truly prejudiced. First, who set the rule that gods must look skinny and floaty? In Xianxia stories, gods are no way different in appearance than regular human beings, so just like regular human beings, gods can be tall or short, big or small, strong or weak. And in this story, it makes perfect sense that Xingzhi is very tall and big in size. I could not imagine if Xingzhi is skinny, how weird he would look in some scenes. Second, it is so sad that so many people and Avenue X still define "strong" according to identity and power. "Being strong" in the spirit level is more important. People cannot decide what identity we are born with and how much strength and power we have, but we can still have a strong mind to face all kinds of difficulty in life, and that is the real definition of "being strong". This is exactly what is reflected in the main leads. Xingzhi is the most powerful in the story, but in the inside he is so weak and vulnerable because he is so lonely. All of his friends have died and he has to live by himself due to responsibility. On the contrast, Shenli is such a strong-minded women. She cares about her people and she is always fighting and never gives up. It is so obvious that the FL is spiritually stronger than the ML and that why he is attracted by her. I could understand why some people feel boring at the beginning because the first few episodes did not show the real conflict, but as the story goes on and all the clues come together, audience would realize why the first few episodes are so important. Avenue X obviously did not pay much attention to those clues (I'm afraid she skipped or fast paced a lot of scenes) and what she said in this video are all on the surface level. (Yes I agree that the make up is bad, but it's not bothering me compared with all the interesting elements in the story). Yu Feng Xing of course is not perfect, but there are so many good details and moments in the story that attracted and pleased so many audience and me. And in my opinion the fighting CG are good enough, and the music is really great! I have just finished watching the last episode and I have to say it is a better one that Princess Agent (mostly due to PA does not have an ending!) I hope people who are interested in the story not be influenced by her prejudiced opinion and give this one a try. It would give you a lot of laughter and tears.

To be honest, avenuex was also sort of prejudiced against zly acting as the fl bc she is too “old,” when in reality she is regarded as one of the best looking actresses in all of china. Many ppl in china and internationally watch zly because she simply looks stunning and attractive; there is no denying that. So for avenuex to say she is old for the role or something does not really make sense. Plus her added maturity and age should make more sense for the story. Regardless, I don’t even think the makeup was that bad and even so, the beauty of zly and the outfits made up for it anyway. I still think zly acts well and was not “zoned” out in this drama. Her body movement and face expressions with other characters especially ml made the drama much better. Even if the plot of the drama is superficial and predictable, the main point of the drama was to have zly and lgx in another fantasy drama and to further build a stronger chemistry between the actors for a romantic love story.

Usually I just read comments but I just wanna add that I second this. I find this drama very refreshing and the characters are all very well written and the story made sense. The humour in the drama is an unexpected surprise to me, they broke the trope that xianxia dramas have to always be serious and solemn all the time, I really enjoyed it and the humour gave me Heaven’s Official Blessings vibes. Theres also good dose of humour and solemness at the same time and I felt the characters were pretty relatable too, such as when the characters can laugh and cry about their own miserable predicament at the same time, or they will just turn childish when faced with certain situations. The BGM OSTs are also a treat to me as I loved epic scores and listened to Two Steps From Hell in the past, I felt a sense of nostalgia listening to the tracks, and I felt that it fits the whole theme and story well. The most satisfying C-drama I have seen for quite some time. Maybe it's nostalgia from the Princess Agent. LGX more handsome here. ZLY more powerful here (far more convincing than Yang Mi's Harbin series. Their chemistry is to the roof, far FAR stronger than PA. Makeup is bad, I agree. Not too old & actually perfect for this genre. I don't understand why Xianxia HAVE to have Gen Z actors. BG music accompanying LGX n ZLY action scenes are distinct & enhance their role. That scene when meteors attack Xingzhi's place... I repeat that part like crazy hahaha... I generally enjoy and share your analysis on stuff, but this time you drop the ball. The most unconvincing video from you so far. Your "I'm-so-over" Xianxia bias is so prominent here, probably as much as my "I'm-so-in-to" Xianxia bias. Haha... Thanx anyway.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve been off Chinese dramas for a while but I’m actually enjoying this drama a lot. I like the interactions between the main characters and I like that the plot isn’t too heavy. I also like the soundtrack and CGI isn’t too bad (seen worst). I like that miscommunication is not the biggest problem in this drama (unlike some others). My biggest critique is how many flashbacks there are in the drama. Like OMG, each episode is only like 38-45 min and sometimes 10 of those minutes are flashbacks. Like I just watched this, no need to show me again. Otherwise, it’s been an easy breezy ride to watch.

I'm sorry but I couldn't disagree more. I'm on episode 24 and so far the drama has been incredibly faithful to the novel. I'm a huge fan of JLFX's works, and I was looking forward to this show because I adored the novel. Tbh, not only am I enjoying it immensely, it even managed to surpass my expectations. The CGI is on point, especially in the last two episodes I've watched, and it just keeps getting better. I can't agree either that the actor is too old and unfit for the role. I didn't know him before this drama, so my opinion is completely unbiased. Imho he fits the role perfectly. He brings the matureness fit of a god that's usually lacking in dramas. His age and his body type is precisely what makes him perfect to play an overpowered god. I also think it's unfair to say this is just another drama like any other Xian xia. JLFX's stories are character driven, and like all her characters, these two are the ones carrying the plot. They are complex, they are multifaceted. One thing is not liking the drama because it's not your (general, not you) cup of tea, but calling it mid because the plot isn't original enough in your opinion shows a lack of understanding of the story

As an international fan, I love the drama. Like I don't need something super complicated and deep. For that I wouldn't need a xianxia or a book adapted one. Think was clear from the book that it was going to be lighthearted. Also real glad the male lead isn't skinny and actually looks like a formidable wall of an ancient god. Lol I feel their makeup and looks are awesome and refreshing. For me this drama is enough and finally where the ending isn't just "I'm back" with no explanations. I think what made it stand out for me is that despite its shortcomings, it has better elements that many other fantasy idol dramas of this genre in most recent years. There's some logic that's not super ridiculous and everything isn't based around adding unnecessary sweet scenes. For a pure romance based fantasy idol drama, it isn't bad but it doesn't have that IT factor to make it the best of its kind either. Enjoyed seeing the two reunite though

Avenue X. You forgot to speak about the good things in this drama. Like great acting of the main leads, Zeng Li, Jacky Li. The beautiful romantic scenes, that we miss nowadays because everyone wants only action, missing the beautiful part of live, like hands holding, the small flowers, the long looks (a must in the mute films, long ago). Lin Geng Xin also fix being the God. In this story The God actually already very old. After listening all your review, i only agree with you in one point : The Make Up Artist. To put it simply... this review was just off the track. You got distracted and didn't understand the idea behind this drama. When we have preconceived ideas this is what happens. This drama is loved by many because of all the things you are hating. It's as if we were all waiting for something like this to take us into a different direction from all the youngsters dramas. And to be truthful a GOD should be mature, look mature, I mean they have lived many years, so they should show this, and that's one of the things that we liked in this drama, the ML didn't have to struggle to look mature, when in other dramas you see a young guy with a character that is an old god and he has to look mature, act all calm and cool, look all serene and know it all, it's easier when the guy already has the looks for maturity. I mean when you have a guy who can act like a teen and in the next drama is acting as an adult, it is very disturbing sometimes 😂😂😂😂😂. So I'm sorry to say you were off the mark on this one!

the Legend of Shen Li, watched all the episodes and the ending!!! What a rare, great finish !! Zhao Li Ying herself producing the drama has indeed made the difference in the most positive terms. Story telling, sceneries, fight scenes, special effects, CGI, selection of the cast, their performance are simply a combined work of artl! Rewarding the viewers with the most satisfactory and well delivered ending is so hard to come by these days, most last episodes of all dramas are always rushed and some even ambiguous or tear-jerking, leaving us wanting, sad, saying to ourselves "why spend so much time chasing the show after all ?" Well, this time I said good bye to The Legend of Shen Li smiling and a grateful heart, certain to come back to rewatch all the episodes again soon.

As a busy mom, I do not like supper dark or deep drama. I used to when I was young. I use my brain for work and daily life so don’t want to continue to use it on my break. I do enjoy this drama greatly, light hearted and does not have typical revenge or sacrifice to get viewer pity/tears. I didn’t like their mortal jokes the first few episodes. His pretend weak seems a bit not natural. Other than that, I enjoy it without skipping. I normally watch 50 - 80% of the drama and skip the rest. So you can see I enjoyed it a lot. As for age, I think they are perfect. I’m tired of watching teenagers acting like CEO. Plus, he is supposed to be old god so I think it is fitting.

For Shenli, I expected it to be just love comedy easy to watch drama, so without any serious expectation, I was throughly enjoy the show. I particular love that both main characters are level head and quiet mature. For the plot itself, there is nothing in the plot, so I can see why people feel frustrated if they expected more as a fantasy drama where there is no ground limit.

I love it because I feel like it is a Princess Agents do over that makes up for all the weaknesses the first time around. Especially letting the actor have such a larger range of emotions. He had to be serious and dour all during PA and was allowed maybe a half smile. And his character this time is allowed to be playful and mischievous and serious and caring. It’s nice.

Usually I would agree with you but this I'm not, I avoid to watch this video because I love this drama and seems like you don't like it. This is my most favorite C-drama so far, become my top 1 over 10 Miles of Blossom and Ashes of Love. Definitely will re-watch when I have nothing to watch. I don't think the 2 actor and actress are too old for the role, it's the perfect age. Who would cast a young 20s actor to play the oldest god alive must be crazy. I like the maturity, I'm tired with these days young actors. Everyone's acting is on point, except for the actor who play Mo Fang, he is handsome but his acting is quite stiff. CGI is very good. Action scene is crazy good. It's so funny but also decent storyline, yes, it isn't a new plot in xiaxian world but it has everything that I wish for xianxia drama to change. I have a good laugh but also cry so much. OST is also crazy good, I like FL's background music everytime she fight. Wardrobe is very diverse, unlike other xianxia "bad side" always wear dark and heavenly side always wear white, both leads wear light and dark clothes. I like how they don't have hateful characters that too crazy in love with 1 of the main so they constantly try to harm other that come near the one they love. This is what I most hate about in non-modern Cdrama. I love how the siblings are the most supporting to the main couple's love, even though the brother is engaged with FL and the sister likes ML. I loveeee how FL is very smart, strong, powerful and independent. Even after she reunite with ML who is now in a form of the most powerful god, her power was never nerfed. There are 2 things I don't like are the their love is a bit too push and pull, it's kinda tired and kiss scene ML is so awkward, feel like he doesn't want to kiss

i was gonna watch this review but skipped to the ending first and i'm glad i did. the way the reviewer says she's done with the entire genre, just made me think: well, i don't think i want to see this review after all. first off, i've tried getting back to c-dramas again after years of not watching. and none could hook me. i would start one drama, lose interest and jump to the next. sometimes, the leads were great but i really wasn't hooked enough. this is the first drama in YEARS that has gotten my full interest. the leads, the characters, , even the way they devoted an entire episode to showing them happy. i hate c-dramas where they put the characters through hell for like 20 plus episodes then give us a happy ending in the last 5 seconds of the drama. That sucks. then there are the characters. I loved that they weren't young. they were mature and the characters were so fleshed out, so beauitful. i loved that he started out as weak. but his mind and personality were so unique, so irresistible to shen li that she couldn't help but fall in love. dunno about most people, but seeing asshole MLs pushing the female lead against the wall for a forceful kiss kinda gets tiring. I love that Xingzhi was gentle and even when he was being insistent, he still was less likely to use force. coz if he did, he could destroy the world. what a wonderfully nuanced character. and i think Lin Gengxin was perfectly cast for this role. He was a cool, chill god. within the first few episodes, i was hooked.

After watching the whole drama for the second time, I changed my mind and marked The Legend of Shenli as one of the best dramas in recent years and I do plan to rewatch it at least once every year. In the first round I did feel that the script is a little too loose, but when I watch it for the second time, I realized there were so many hidden themes and deep philosophy everywhere. Also there are so many great scenes that makes people laugh or scream or cry that I rewatched them over and over.

I finished the series yesterday and while I agree with "the smoothing", I found the series quite enjoyable. The last episode, I didn’t think it was, for the most part, that important. The serpent goddess and her 20 year love affair I did not find interesting. I did enjoy seeing how Shen Li and the god easily exchanged energies at this stage in their relationship, the wrapping up of their story, the CGI, and the stunning visuals. I found your review quite harsh, especially about Lin Genxin, and I have never seen him before. He is not heavy, gods, especially this one, should not appear fragile, skinny or ethereal. Moreover, he is quite handsome and believable. I see that so far, i am not alone in my overall enjoyment of the series, and the time i invested in it, or the rewatch value. After garnering well over a billion views and countless comments, it looks like there is a substantial viewership that truly loved the series. I respect your professional opinion and for the most part, I am very grateful for the reviews you offer, that is why I subscribe.

I love the drama, the leads are one of the reason but the author is my favorite. And this novel of hers is a lighthearted one, the one that to enjoy after long day of work, not the distressing and heart-wrenching drama. The drama until ep 34 stick with novel’s plot which is better than other dramas which change almost everything just to make the leads more miserable than in the novel. Also, the main leads are mature, not some young actors/actresses trying to gain their experiences in work.

Actor and actress are good. It was just the script and some settings. The script is too loose even though the last episode and ending is perfect. I found 与风行 too slow. They’re dragging the story so badly. I’m watching it just because of great chemistry between Zhao Liying and Gengxin. And Heaven isn’t punishing the second pair just because Deity fell in love with a simpleton girl, but because he did something for her using his power, which is prohibited.

Avenues is 90% correct. The story is indeed boring because it only involves the relationship with ML and FL with nothing else. The FL is getting too old and the makeup is indeed too much.

I know your Point but it gets better after he confessed he is xingyun they stopped their act. And their chemistry gets better after that I read the novel before I watched the drama and it’s pretty close to the novel and even close some loop holes the novel wasn’t able to do so. So it’s not just because I like her I’m defending her. I read the novel before I watched and I gta say it’s better than I expected. To each their own opinion

These days it seems like a lot of Chinese fantasy and historical dramas are just being churned out and really flooding the market, but they are all so similar and extremely mediocre both in plot and acting. I've gone from being an avid fan of C-Drama to an apathetic viewer - the last year and a half I've definitely turned more to K-Drama and back to western programmes. I actually have deep sympathy for you, having to watch them all!

That may be true, but it's not the case for The Legend of Shen Li. In many ways it is different from other C-Dramas, with a strong female lead and a soft male lead. I really appreciated the older actors in those roles, and the great ending too.

I love The Legend of Shenli. I read the book. It’s 90% copied from the book. I love the mature leads. I’ve re-watched it at least thrice already. 😅

(I don't write this to hate on anyone, this is just a personal opinion to comment on this review being given) This time I need to disagree with you. One of the reasons why this drama is good is because it uses mature lead actor & actress, LGX & ZLY, who have better acting skills than the young ones. I also don't feel LGX is out of character as a high god who you said need to be lightweight and use very flowy fabric(?), and so I nearly disagree with all the statements. I do agree on one of your reviews for CN drama : A journey to Love, but this time it is really too much, when I watch the whole review, I disagree on almost everything you've said. As for me, Legend of Shen Li is definitely going to be one of the best drama, if not the best, in 2024.

I admit I only started watching this drama because I really really liked Princess Agents, it was the second drama I had seen and what got me down the rabbit hole of Chinese television dramas. I liked the drama so much I pretty much binged anything with Zanillia Zhao in it. So I especially came back because the two leads were linked together again, so many years later. Sadly this is not a good drama, and it's really sad because the last one I watched with my fave actress in it was Story of Ming Lan, and that was amaaaaazing. The contrast in quality is jarring, but I hope they'll put them together in more and hopefully better dramas in the future.

I don't mind the drama but I wouldn't consider it an overused plot for me since I really, really(like really) can't watch shows in this genre. I tapped out around Love & Redemption time period so I'm actually surprised that I can watch this at all lol. They're usually boring and slow paced for me anyhow. This is the first one I can actually follow prolly because of it's faster pace even though it follows the same beats. But, also, isn't that the point of genre? It's like a medieval fantasy. If the hero isn't fighting monsters to get to the Big Bad and win the love interest and/or save the world then what's the point lol? But I like typical straightforward stories like that. I do wish there were more familiar dieties but I heard it's based off a novel so that's also probably why it's a very straightforward one.

One thing that always bothers me is using fake water. To me, it looks cheap and lazy. The fact that this is an S+ drama or whatever and that's used is infuriating to me. Maybe it's just me but I don't enjoy watching Lin Geng Xin because of his mouth movements when he's talking. I know he's dubbed but he just looks like he can't properly form the correct mouth movements to pronounce words. He just looks like he's mumbling and it irritates me. And I swear, every time I try to start a new xianxia drama I think to myself: "So..who's going to die first this time?" 🤣🤣

Agree with you, i stop watching around ep4/5 with so much of skipping here and there, i feel like ZLY also spaced out in some of the scene, maybe she also feeling bored😅
