Yup. A group of young aviation students, learning at the pace of drinking from a firehose, relax one day to celebrate a milestone in their training. Half a lifetime later one of them recalls a random dude's mother hen comments from years before, which turns out to be the critical piece of info that saves everyone's neck. Uh huh.

That foto of you Dan a t the 1:16 min mark brings home HOW DANGEROUS Aviation is. I started in 1974 in a C T210 and Hang Gliding at 14 yrs old. I've flown GA since and Para gliders, Hang gliders and now Gliders since 1997 I'm really careful but also very aware how things can go sideways even when being cautious, conservative and prepared. Dan - I know Part 121 is not your usual thing but have a listen to the American 321 out of LGA a couple of days ago. Bird strike, declared a mayday and diverted to JFK with an engine out. Were told by the incredible NY controllers 'caution wake turbulence' due to departing 330 and the request for a straight out if they went missed was denied for the same reason. Told to make a 90 degree left turn instead! Had the 330 aborted, the 321 would end up with an unnecessary EO go-around. ATC got to do better with a mayday aircraft.

I think it's smart when ATC talks to a pilot that's clearly totally messed up that they sound cool and compassionate. That's not the moment to start chastising someone for making a mistake, no matter how serious. While I agree that having someone from the FAA have a talk with a pilot that does something stupid is a good idea, it needs to be done in a way that enhances safety for all, not just to punish a knucklehead. If there are a bunch of FAA inspectors hanging around airshows trying to do ramp checks and issue Brasher warnings, people will stop flying to airshows, and that will only hurt aviation.

Dan, I have a feeling that the RV-12is crash in FL was fuel starvation or spatial disorientation. He flew for about 4 hours beforehand (KCDK doesn’t sell fuel). The RV12 has a 20 gallon tank, burns around 4.5 gallons per hour. In my 12 I plan for 2.5 hour legs. The last moments of the flight are troubling indeed. The helicopter sustained substantial damage. There were no injuries. What was this all about???
@ProbableCause-DanGryder2 күн бұрын
This apparently happened after the airplane had been sold and the new owners were out flying it around. I have no idea but the DC-3 did hit a parked and unattended turbine helicopter while taxiing. The damage to the tail of the helicopter was substantial, but no idea on this story.

Insurance companies are expert in determining risk & probabilities.To achieve the beneficial results of significant recurrent training in GA, insurance companies could easily determine the less likelihood of a deterious incidents following required recurent training. With prohibitive insurance rates for noncompliance, recurrent structured training would become the norm.

Actually I think the ATC at Osh. are amazing, trying to control all those planes but it does sound frantic without any room for error, and is an accident just waiting to happen.
@ProbableCause-DanGryder2 күн бұрын
ATC at Osh is frantic, high pitch, and the terminology is non standard. It’s ATC trying to fly the plane for the pilot by screaming urgency. “Tighten it up” and “one continuous turn to final” and “keep it descending on the downwind” are absolute illegal phrases by ATC and there’s more. The hysteria creates a non stabilized approach that NO ONE is trained for or ready for. It’s FAA and EAA liable for deaths caused by the chaos that was created by design. There will be deaths next year again.

Regarding N645PM. More will come out but I believe he didn't try to land on the highway. The final approach is right over that highway (the lights cross it). He had an engine failure to the north and tried to make it to land straight in on 16 but was too low (look at his ADSB reported altitude and the field elevation, and note that he was reporting less than field elevation when ADSB cut off which was still further out than where he crashed. I suspect he tried to stretch the glide and stalled it then crashed. I also don't like his speed during his descent from cruise; it looks uncontrolled and if he had set up for best glide and trimmed for it he is likely to have had enough extra energy to have made it. So I don't think the problem was flying at night nor that he tried to land on 684. Just my humble opinion with very little data.

I don’t understand why since we have ads-b they can’t call out N-numbers, perhaps no replies but positive control with vectors. Line them up on a 3 mile final, stabilized approach.

Even maritime is far ahead of us today. There should be a commission put to together to come up with a plan. It is really insane we haven't looked at that. No reason to not be able to have aircraft respond during such high tempo ops. Well there is when the radios my father flew with in 1938 are still the norm. AM is not the way to move forward. Back in the very early 60’s I was a student pilot at Moorabbin airport in Melbourne Australia. This airport was incredibly busy and a great place to get used to traffic situations. I was flying a Chipmunk solo doing circuits and bumps . The circuit flown on that day was 17 takeoff and a very square 1000ft circuit ,landing back on runway 17. On this day I was halfway along my downwind leg and was setting up to land . I looked to my right just in time to see a Piaggio P166 pass below me from right to left and about 100 ft below. I knew that the culprit was in fact an ex airline pilot . Being a teenager with no perceived status I reported him to the operations manager of the aero club but nothing came of it. There was,on the aerodrome, a very modern control tower ,and they would have had a perfect view of the incident. I know that the height that you could fly across a circuit pattern was a good deal higher than the 1000 Ft that I was occupying. The Aviation Authority of the time used a lot of bureaucratic procedures and to place an incident report involved a lot of forms to fill in , and ,consequently , many incidents occurred un noticed. That recording of traffic control immediately reminded me of the recordings of the system set up for Oshkosh that we listened to in the 70,s. and still have a pucker factor . Cheers from Downunder👍🇦🇺🇺🇸 to left about 100 ft below me.
