Looks a lot better than their old hollow points, I think you could have shot those at a brick wall and they wouldn't have expanded.... but these did good out of the longer barrel. Thanks for the test 🙂 !

Before Covid I bought a lot of Aguila ammo online and it was the cheapest available, now just started to come back strong but the price is the same as the other major players. I like the product, never had any problems with it

Yeah, it sucks the tests are so expensive (and time consuming). Would love to see a 5rd test, because you can never really tell with one shot. Could be a 1% chance that they don't expand from the shorter barrel... or it could be a 99% chance.

Aguila also makes a 117 grain JHP (yes, 117, not 115, not sure why). If you manage to get ahold of any of that, I'd love to see a test of that, too.

@@transtubular They may have a different overall design that makes them expand less and penetrate deeper or expand more and penetrate less. Or they may have a hollow point design that is more prone to clogging with clothing at all velocities and not expanding at all. Testing is the only way to know for sure.

Every 100fps extra makes a big difference. I have some air rifles I've used on plastic bottles and my 1000fps rifle with .177 will go through 3 bottles. The 750fps rifle with .177 will go through 1 bottle. When it comes to a larger caliber it become even more dramatic.

I dont have a short barrel 9mm, so these are great. I have about 50 boxes stored up. They chronograph at 1275 out of an 8" barrel btw.

If you focus only on stopping the round quickly after it enters the target, which is the purpose of JHP, it makes more sense how they look in gel using 3" and then 4" barrels. Expansion is only needed to apply more brakes when needed. It's that simple. We are using JHP to protect people behind the target. Nothing else. P.S. Love your show! It's the best part of my day.

From your previous testing I'd say the best budget JHPs are the Sig Sauer white box and the Winchester white box -- in 9mm anyway. And like you, I've never seen these Aquila rounds on the shelf. Nor online.

Honestly, I was not optimistic when you started chronograph readings with GX4. The P80 #s are minimum of where I would typically expect 3"-3.2" (124s) to be. I like around 1200 out of a 4"-4.25" but settle for anything over 1150. That being said the P80 barrel length performed at least once. Not trusting my life or liability to this one. Thank you for test. Appreciate you running 2 barrel lengths & clothing. Well done.

While many people may praise Aguila ammo, I have found it to be lousy ammo that fails to feed, or causes the gun to return to battery. In some of my pistols it feeds fine, but it won't feed or return to battery in my CZs which is unusual.

Thank you for your time and effort, it's much appreciated. You've helped me make informed decisions on how to best protect my family & myself with good ammo choices. My normal 9mm carry rounds are now Federal HST 147g in warmer months and Underwood Xtreme Defenders in wintertime. I definitely feel better equipped than most with good ammo. And i've built a more-than-respectable stock of a few other good preformers, buying them up at budget prices when they go on sale. I'd love to see some tests of the best preformers through a window pane, and a rack of pork ribs in front of some jelly but I won't hold my breath lol. Cheers

In today's concealed carry market, the majority of people are not running around with 4.5 inch barrels. Generally it's 3-4 in. So this hollow point would not be a viable option for defensive purposes.

Definitely a different design from their 117 grain. Their 117s look like some kind of old school design with a softer lead alloy. If you can find them, I'd be interested in seeing the results.

I'm so glad there are channels like this that have picked up the mantle, so I can look up the performance of ammo I see on the shelves from different barrel lengths before I actually buy them. Got a box of these just to try out at the range out of my PSA Dagger Extreme Carry, since it basically has the same barrel length as a G17. At least this stuff could serve as an okay backup ammo for a compact/full-size, I suppose.

Seems like most typical ammo is designed from duty sized pistols with barrels 4in on up. Even with a slight decrease in speed it seems like it was on the minimum velocity edge for expansion to begin with.

The P-80 did good, although it was 86-fps slower than the claimed MV, I've watched a video of a very pretty young with a pink tee shirt, That had Aguila on it and she pronouncer it AGG-YOU- LA, and as you know it means Eagle in Spanish, there is a KZbin channel by the name of {Julien Miguel } that I watched before this video and that's how he said It was pronouced, I think I was the only comment, I used to say it like you and everyone else, until I was her video, thank you for the testing and I'm looking forward to the next one, Have a safe Weekend My Friend. 👍 🇺🇸

Every pronunciation you look up from Spanish speakers, google, or any other actual official pronunciation source says it's AH-ghee-la. The "you" or "gwee" is how you hear most country folks pronouncing it. I put the emphasis on the GHEE instead of the AH out of habit.

Academy had two models of Canik for $279 each this morning, a G17 and a G19 Glockish-type. Sold out at mine before they opened. I don't need them, but that was cheaper than a P80 or a Daggar. With no transfer fees too.

Now you know why your jelly test are so valuable Tools. Same round from several different barrel length firearms give a real life indication of what to expect from the firearm and the ammo. Just because one caliber from a manufacturer works well doesn't mean all their ammo will and that many factors can effect performance. Some of these micro handguns just don't let the round get up to speed to allow for good performance. As we've seen in your testing regiment the smaller barrel lengths just don't measure up to what the manufacturers claims are. So what looks like a promising round turns out to be mostly a dud. Be aware of your surroundings, be true to what you believe in & always be safe

Ever see 22lr Hollow Points out of handgun and rifle? They don't expand with the handgun and penetrate well... but then out of a rifle they expand and only penetrate like a couple inches. (Always recommend people check that out. Was very surprised when I first saw that and had to really verify it).

Good one, Tools! Those of us with short barrels can learn a lot from tests like this. This is the exact reason I use 115 gr hollow points in my 9mm's, which are both short barrels. The generally higher velocity (guaranteed in my reloads!) of the lighter bullet gives it that much better of a chance to work the way it's supposed to. In addition, penetration is generally very close between the 124 and the 115, what the guys in white lab coats call a statistically insignificant. It is also the reason I would never load any 147 gr bullet into a short barreled pistol. I've seen way too many failures with these bullets to trust them as a SD bullet! Cheers, jc

Sig V crown & Winchester white box JHP are the only "budget" bullets I would trust my life with.. I prefer HST & Gold dots though maybe Critical Defense CorBon and a couple of others in 9mm but mostly Gold Dots HST's & V crowns

Completely agree on buying it bulk to shoot out of a full size, like my Beretta 92. If you're just looking to buy a few boxes to rotate for your compact or micro compact edc, PLEASE just pay a bit extra and buy top tier stuff. It just makes sense.

I have very limited experience with the brand but if you want to have a switch taken to your behind by your Grand Momma for using un-Christian like language, try the .22LR stuff in a semi-auto. It's not that it's terribly inaccurate, it's that I don't think any three rounds are loaded alike at the factory. Think, Bang, puff (but those bullets did leave the barrel), and click. The VERY limited number of .38Spl rounds I've fired were all over the map, from a rest, out of a really nice four-inch Ruger Secuity Six and also seemed to suffer a bit from messed up powder charges. I was impressed with the accuracy you attained with the 9mm ammo as well as the recorded velocities and it takes something special to impress me at all when it comes to the 9mm. I do think the folks at corporate R&D need to rethink and redesign that otherwise nice looking JHP in the 124Grn loading as your test proved, to my satisfaction at least, that the bullet as currently designed functions best out a near service-to-service size and barrel length pistol. I have an mp m2.0 9mm full size with a 5 inch barrel that would be perfect for tests like this. I know the difference between 4.25 and 5 isn’t gonna be massive but having a 3 and a 5 looks good on paper. Plus it’s a shooter I absolutely love the gun it’s fabulous. I have these exact bullets and after watching this video I’d only put them in a longer barreled gun. I like the sig v crowns they seem to be good hollow points. Price is decent as well. Has anyone ever heard of a brand novx? I got some 60 grain 9mm bullets that claim to do like 1800 fps. I bet they would over penetrate all day. Be fun to see u review those. Probably wouldn’t be that impressive because it seems those super light super fast bullets loose steam pretty quickly once they hit the gel. Another good honest straightforward test as always tools you are definitely my go to for any type of testing you jut tell it like it is good bad or indifferent unfortunately this one doesn't look good at all especially in the shorter barrel so hard pass on those rounds,. For 9mm i usually have either hst or v crowm 124 gr in 40 165 gr ranger t series is the absolute shit and completely devistating in 45 i have some Remington golden sabres and some barnes 185gr tac xpd +p for when i want to carry my freaking awesome hk45c as for the 9mm its my frankinsig which is m18 slide Wilson combat grip module and the fcu from my 320 xcompact the 40 is either hk usp 40 full size and just waiting for my p2000sk v3 to arrive.also been known to carry colt king cobra 3" barrel when im feeling the need for a wheel gun i like to change it up and make sure im proficient with all.gotta lovec choices and god bless America where we can do so,also god bless you and yours tools and may he and your sidearm keep you safe! I understand why you don't do several tests/shots. It's gotta be expensive (esp with the high cost of the gel). Would be nice to see a couple shots though. Then you can see if they never expand from a particular gun/barrel length or if it's 1% that don't expand, 25%, or 90%, etc...

It's not about money, it's about time. I can tell you for a fact I wont ever do multiple shots of each round just for the sake of seeing what % rate expansion happens at. You wont be set up with a nice even block of gel in the real world so it's all speculation no matter how many rounds I fire into it. It's just simply not that important, not to mention the fact that every single time I have taken multiple shots with any round under any circumstances the results have been nearly identical.

That clothing is really testing the limits! Curious how it would do without now but not curious enough to ask for another test that was enough! For budget hollow points Iv seen worse so I’d get them if it’s all I could find or for a beginner so they’re not overwhelmed with prices of target ammo on top of defensive.

If possible I'd like to see at least two shots in the gel to make sure the results are consistent from shot to shot. If you get two shots of the same ammo and it doesn't expand then in my humble opinion it's more likely not a one off. If you get one to expand and one that doesn't maybe the ammo is inconsistent. If you get two that expand then it suggests higher confidence in the results. The same applies to penetration depth. Just my 2 cents! I love this channel.

The problem there is it will never end. People wont be happy with a one expands, one doesn't situation and want a third, fourth, fifth. I don't have the time to devote a whole range day to just a couple of tests.

My money is on how they load it. Aguila probably just loads them to the same standard as theyre range ammo, as we all know HPs need that extra velocity to mushroom out nice. its great if you want expensive range ammo :P

I was going to ask what's the cost of the ammo, then I realized sometimes when you mention guns and money together it can cause trouble with you tube. the fact it comes 50 a box hints it must be a good price. I think it should perform well in my taurus g3

Pretty good out of 4in or longer. Looks like the 1040 to 1050 fps velocity is minimum for expansion versus no expansion thru cloth. Good comparison. 👍 🙏 🇺🇸
