I really, really hate when youtube videos and dog breed descriptions make them out to be quiet and super easy. I always worry that people get them because they can't have dogs that might disturb the neighbors, only to be forced to give up the dog when it turns out to be ten times as loud as a barking one. And that's why I love videos like this that shows what it can be like if you end up with a vocal individual!

So true! However, Ginger and Graham only did that when we encouraged it. They weren’t like “alright they’re gone - AROOOOOOO!” 🤣 But - separation anxiety did sometimes trigger it. My very first KZbin video was Graham alone in a hotel room baroooooing away. 🤗

@@BasenjiAdventures Yeah, my girl has mild separation anxiety, so she mostly just whimpers and whines when she gets stressed. But she always does one long foghorn howl to let us know that she's alone and wants her family to come back. First time she did it was in my parents' yard. My father was working there and she was leashed to a tree next to him, but then he disappeared into the garage to look for some tools. Suddenly he heard a really loud, deep sound. We live on the coast, and for a moment he wondered if it was a ship until he realized it was the tiny dog who had been left alone for 10 minutes on the other side of the property. Do your basenjis scream if they get surprised, scared or shocked? The way women scream in horror movies; really high-pitched and sudden?

That’s so funny 😆 Zinga and Zulu have both gotten vocal when left alone. When we first got Zinga, And would walk one at a time, we would keep an eye on the other one with our security cams. I’ve caught both of them baroooing, but unfortunately the camera did not record the sound. I haven’t heard it since they’ve adjusted to being here. As for screaming, my wife shared a story with me that happened recently. She was walking Zinga and a sudden noise scared him and he screamed loudly, so yes, we’ve got a screamer. 😂

My sister had a dog that was part Basenji. He made similar noises! He was sweet as can be. She named him Moe, short for Mozart. He passed away at about 15. I was 13. He was a very sweet dog.

My roommates basenji yodels too, but I call it yelling since her voice is much deeper and less shrill. She'll walk around yelling at us until we give her attention, but after a little while she'll act like we annoy her and walk away. Very cat like behavior

I had a lurcher that didn't bark. She just yodelled like this dog 😂 she was greyhound x border collie and we didn't know about the yodel howl when first got her. She was just always an excited puppy. When we first took her to some woods for a walk, she started to do her yodel howl 😂

I used to work at a feed store and on Saturday mornings people would bring in puppies and kittens to give away and one Saturday there was a litter of puppies that 1 half the size of his siblings with 1 brown eye and 1 eye that was so blue I figured he was blind I'm that eye. I didn't need a dog, didn't want a dog, but I knew this little guy needed me. So I took him home signing 1.46lbs. namedhim Goliath meant to be a joke. I thought he would remain small cause I didnt know what breed. We have an extrrmely close bond and any trick I tried to teach him he understood right away. Soni got a DNA test done on him when he was 7months old. Before I go the results I had never heard of a basenji dog. His results said he's about 75% basenji and American hairless terrier, but was also mixed with a few other breeds including Chihuahua. Then one day Mojo adopted us. He was a little guy that still had his baby teeth that had crossed a busy road to meet us. Scooped him up, tried to find his people, but no one claimed him. So he came home with us as a foster, but that failed. Now Goliath won't perform most of the tricks he knows cause he just wants to mess with Mojo all the time. And apparently when you mix Chihuahua and basenji you can just forget about them being a barkless dog. Goliath will bark if he thinks someone is outside And there is absolutely nothing I can do to stop him. He's basically the most annoying doorbell ever. He is 2 1/2 years old now and neither big nor small. I guess he sighs approximately 20 - 22lbs. Tha kd for reading about Goliath.

When I was a kid about 10 yrs old, I got a NEW bicycle. Our neighbors had a couple of these. I would ride my bike occasionally and the lady would come out and ask me if I wanted some cookies and milk. One day I pulled up and went into their house for maybe 6 minutes, when I came back outside one of them was up on the seat of my bike chewing the cover off of it.

They’re not all as noisy as Ginger was 🤗 But they do tend to be loud when left alone for the first few times. Definitely best to check with the neighbors first to make sure they can live with it for a little bit. :-)
