@@Ilikefire2793 The Wall Connector can pull 48 amps continuously. Per code, you can only pull a max of 80% of a circuit breaker's rating continuously. So 80% of a 60 amp breaker is 48 amps, which is the amount the wall connector can pull. And yes, it's 220-240 volts.

Nathan seems like a great dude and his work is very clean. I bring this up to educated or at least think im correct on my interpretation of the NEC code in regards to these tesla chargers. Nathan seems to have used #6/2 NM-B Cable (60 degrees C) rated for a max of 55 amps. Although at the max setting the wall connector may only utilize 48 amps because the NEC deems it a continuous load it must be rated at 125% capacity. Therefore the breaker and wire must be rated at 60 AMPS (48 x 125%). The only way to get away with using #6 is to use that of insulation type at 75 degrees C or more. This would require conduit the entire way. an easy fix is to re program the tesla at the next highest setting which would be 50 Amp breaker giving 40 Amps output. Let me know your thoughts!

100 percent agree with everything you said. Retired IBEW 701 here. I just put one of these in for my nephew and I did it the right way, the only way with EMT and #6. I can tell you for a fact that this charger pulls 48 amps and the wire does have a "feel/buzz" going on. I told my nephew I would be more comfortable if he turned the amps down but he wants full power, stupid is stupid does I guess. Just like when it gets cold out and you hear about home fires because of "electrical" problems AKA 16 gauge extension cords and space heaters we will be seeing fires because of installs like this.

There is a second aspect to this. Because the industry is so new, inspectors are wanting to see the installation manual and most state the need for 90 degree copper which eliminates romex. All my installs are thhn in conduit.

#6 NB-B (Romex) is rated for 55 Amps per NEC. The WallConnector should be set for a 50 Amp breaker and a 50 Amp breaker should be installed. #6 THHN in continuous conduit could have been used with a 60 Amp breaker.
@nathanmiller9711

I typically install Wall Connectors using MC (metal clad) cables. Armored cables. They’re good for 65 amps when terminating to 75 degree terminals. As opposed to Romex, which as Paul pointed out, is limited to 55 amps. Plus check the installation instructions - Tesla dictates 90 degree wire be used, which rules out Romex, since it’s derated to 60 degrees under Section 334.80

Nice work Nathan. Red taping the white conductor is one tell that you know what you're doing. When I wired mine I came through the back and didn't realize that I could wrap the conductors around the right and enter the lugs from the top. So I made a tight loop and wired in the bottom of the lugs. Then of course I read the instructions. Also had issues connecting to Wifi. Great video!
@kayak_1
@kayak_1 2 жыл бұрын
One isn't allowed to use the white and use tape on a #6, this would be allowed on a #4. Also with a 60 amp breaker wouldn't make code based on the wire used, the breaker needs to be replaced with a 50 amp breaker.
@nathanmiller9711
@nathanmiller9711 2 жыл бұрын
@@kayak_1 you are correct about the 50 amp (Section 334.80 relegates #6 Romex to 55 amps max). However, with regard to reidentifying the neutral as an ungrounded conductor, 200.7(C)(1) allows that for any size wire. Perhaps what you’re thinking is reidentifying a black wire as white and that is only permitted on #4 and larger, per 200.6(B)

Installation has a big flaw. Although the system breaker was properly selected, the wire was not... let me elaborate: This charger max amperage is 48 A, and according to NEC, continous load must be designed to 80% capacity (or 125% excess capacity = 1/80 =120). So, at 48 A x 125% = 60 A. Breaker is fine. Now the type of cable is NM... although these cables can withstand 90C, the selection of amperage should be limited to 60C. (NM-B (nonmetallic-sheathed) cable may be used for both exposed and concealed work in normally dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90°C (with ampacity limited to that for 60°C conductors). This means that 6/2 wire is limited to 55 Amps. In the video you also mention that the length is ~130 ft. Because this long distance you will need to add 10% extra capacity which means you will need to upgrade to 70 A breaker and 4/2 wire. I recommend limiting the charger max amps to less than 44 amps to avoid any issue.

It's actually a bit cheaper and easier to get a NEMA 6-50 than a 14-50. The only difference is, the 14-50 has a neutral (because it's designed for RV's). The only time you need a neutral is if you are going to pull 120V split phase out of it. Which EV's will not do. The 6-50 is a bit cheaper for both the outlet and the wiring since there is 1 fewer wire. I guess you can make the argument that if you already have a 14-50 Gen2 adapter (which is a good one to have because that plug is in almost every RV park), you don't have to buy an extra 6-50, but I think the 6-50 wire, outlet, and adapter together, is cheaper than the 14-50 wire and outlet. But as far as EV charging, the 6-50 and 14-50 are identical.
@DirtyTesla
@DirtyTesla 2 жыл бұрын
That's great to know. When learning about charging 3 years ago before I got my Model 3, the recommendation was always just get a 14-50. The other reason I like having it, is it's ready if I need it for anything else.
@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
@@DirtyTesla Yeah that's true, if you're using it for some other application that needs the neutral wire (clothes dryer comes to mind as something that might need the neutral), it makes sense. If it's exclusively for EV charging, the 6-50 will be cheaper though like I said.

@StormsparkPegasus
@StormsparkPegasus 2 жыл бұрын
@@DerKatzeSonne No. Neutral is not ground. With 240V like a NEMA 6-50, you have two hots and a ground. The only time you need a neutral, is if you need 120V. That is how the US gets 120V. While you CAN certainly use a NEMA 14-50 for EV charging, you're wasting a bit of money on the extra neutral wire and the extra plug on the outlet. Now, on the inside of the fuse box, the neutral and ground do end up connected together, and both end up at the same place, but the neutral wire is not the same thing as the ground wire. Neutral is only needed for 120V split phase. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH7QhqKQnZh7p5Y

I have a NEMA 6-50 outlet with the mobile connector. This seems like a better option than the 14-50 outlet. Both outlets are rated for 50 amps but the 14-50 requires three conductors plus ground, whereas the 6-50 only requires two conductors plus ground. The third conductor in the 14-50 is not used for charging, so is not needed but makes the wiring more expensive because it requires more copper. Notice that the wall connector only used two conductors plus ground. That’s all it needs.

NEC code 2020 requires a GFCI breaker for a nema 14-50 plug. They're like $120-$180 for the breaker to add to your cost considerations. Most states are still on NEC 2017 code, which doesn't need GFCI, but eventually all states will move to NEC 2020 shortly. So check in your state. A wall charger doesn't need a GFCI breaker, in fact the manual states not to use a GFCI breaker since nearly all wall chargers have a GFCI built in and they tend to interfere with each other.

@@TESLAenjoyer Any work performed by an electrician must follow the code adopted by the state. If your state is on NEC 2020 I would get a wall charger instead of an outlet.

If you were running it through conduit i wondering why you didn’t pull individual conductors. Cheaper and less heat. I assuming that you didn’t run conduit in the attic this the reason for the shielded wire.

I have had the Tesla wall charger since getting my MY, in May of this year. Its a great little device. It charges much faster than the NEMA14-50 plug and looks really nice as well.

You're not kidding. I was caught off guard how much faster it really does charge!
@riceball777
@riceball777 2 жыл бұрын
actually its not much faster. a NEMA 14-50 can charge at 40amps which is about 10,000 watts of power and the Tesla wall connector can charge at 48amps which is about 12,000 watts of power. But if your using the gen 2 mobile connector that came with the tesla plug in to the nema 14-50 outlet your only going to get 32amps about 8,000 watts of powered because the gen 2 mobile connector is limited to 32amp/8,000 watts. You need the corded mobil connector or the gen 1 mobil connector to get the 40amps/8,000 watts.

Best advise for anyone looking to get an EVSE (charger) installed, GET TWO (if your situation allows)! Built my house last year before owning an EV and had one Nema 14-15 installed. Bought my first EV 3 months ago, instantly fell in love, and immediately ordered another EV. I prefer to have them on dedicated breakers. Besides in 5-10 years you’ll have two EVs anyways.

😜 in Switzerland we get about the same Output Power with 16 Amps 3x400V would be only 14AWG Wire

In Europe we have three phase 240 and 400 volt, so we charge at a maximum of 16 amps, but still 11 kw on model 3/Y and with a 32 amp fuse you can charge a Model S/X with 22kw, so that is really something if you have a 100 kWh battery or two cars.

I got an Ohme Pro installed at my house recently for my M3 (coming soon...) but I think if I'd have done some research into the Tesla charger, I'd have gotten that. Looks much nicer, and I don't need all the "smart" features of the Zappi/Ohme/Pod Point chargers we have in the UK - just plug and go

I got myself a wall-connector also. My main reason was that I live in an apartment building and I don't want anyone to be able to unplug my car. Also I like to always have my mobile charger in the car, just in case, and taking it out and putting it back all the time would suck. =)

Great points. Most NEMA 14-50s don't really like you unplugging/replugging all the time anyway.

I just ordered the wall connector yesterday. I’m torn on installing inside vs outside the garage. My M3 comes in a week and I am getting the cybertruck as soon as it’s available. The 3 fits in the middle of the garage but then the wife’s SUV can’t be in driveway for me to get in/ out and with the truck I will be parking it in the driveway anyway. Leaning towards doing something similar to what you just did but also kind of want to baby the 3 and keep it in the garage (even though I only plan to have it for a year)
