@drewforchic9083
@drewforchic9083 4 жыл бұрын
One race that I thought was interesting in 3.5e were the Dvati (I think they were from the 3.5e Dragon Compendium?). Basically (if I remember correctly), a Dvati was a humanoid, but they were always born in twins, and its single soul/sentience was split between the two bodies. So your single character would have two bodies running around on the battlefield, sharing damage and stats and stuff, but able to be multiple places at once. Obviously this is exactly the kind of rule-complicating wackiness that 5e is trying to avoid, but I think they're neat.

I loved the idea of the Fey'ri when I first read about them. The first idea I had to create an official one in 5e was with the Tiefling, since it was the closest thing. Made it feral for the Dex and went for the Succubus variant spells. It had most elven like traits except sleep magic resistance but it was the closest I could make without going homebrew since I was playing in AL. The rest was mostly flavor like the pointy ears and wings that didn't allow it to fly.

What's neat about the Vril, whether you treat them like goblins or not, you could still take inspiration from the standard goblinoids to make some "hobgoblin" Vril or "bugbear" Vril. (Personally, in my own homebrew, I also take inspiration from earlier edition mammal kobolds to make even SMALLER than goblin goblinoids I call ratlings, and a smaller Vril in that vein would be interesting, IMO. I also take inspiration from Warhammer "greenskins" to make "goblin" analogue mini-orcs I call orclins--as well as ratling size even mini-er orcs I call grats or gratlings--as well as bigger orcs in the vein of bugbears I call Uruks).

@derekstein6193 4 жыл бұрын
@@Nildread I initially thought the same thing, but one could argue for either. I suggest something different. Have you seen the Gestalt Classes section of the DMG? Why not make the Fey'ri a Gestalt RACE? Just use the thiefling race and the high elf subrace plus Fey Ancestry and a 30 fly speed.
@Nildread
@Nildread 4 жыл бұрын
@@derekstein6193 true, it's kinda just going about the same thing from two different angles. Which side do you want to be more prominent. To be fair though, half-elf and half-orc are the only races without subraces I guess someone could argue they are subraces already. Wait I seem to remember half elf having something for being half dark elf. Regardless I think it's easier to have plane touched subraces in their own category of race besides fey, because that's complicated. If I was to make it I'd have the celestial touched races like aasimar and then subraces, fiend touched races and subraces, and elemental touched races and subraces. Rather than having a fiend subrace for every race in their subraces and a celestial subrace and a draconic subrace and a elemental subrace. But that's obviously just my own preference, probably influenced by how usually if you publish a book on fiend subraces they all end up together and you don't necessarily reprint them with the original subraces, so I have heavy bias aha.
@Nildread
@Nildread 4 жыл бұрын
@@derekstein6193 yeah, you could argue for that. Balance is nice, but if you care that much about balance then just use tiefling and add flavour of the other race or dragborn+flavour or aasimar or genasi. It's definitely unbalanced to give one PC every racial ability from 2 races, but then if you do that for all of your players or if everyone is aware and ok with it, balance suddenly doesn't matter as much.

I second this. They're innately psionic(which could just be a subrace as many 5e homebrews have done), have multiple arms which even as flavor can be interesting, and as often shows up with them is chameleon carapace. We have all manor of races in 5e but no insectoid ones and they're not even locked into Dark Sun's Athas, they're known to live in Southern Faerun.

I've honestly been wanting to see playable thri-kreen since I first read about them. Four-armed mantis people, what's not to like? They'd probably give the carapace and standing leap by default, and I feel like the extra arms would probably be handled similarly to the Loxodon's trunk. They might give a natural armor of 12 + Dex, seeing as they have natural armor in the stat block. Not sure how they'd handle the unique weapons, or the psionics, tbh.

Like before I want Hengenyokai. They were in 'Eastern inspired' settings in 3.5 and 4th. Basically you covered them here with the Tibbit, but there were a bunch of animals like crabs, small dogs, birds and even a fish. They also had a hybrid form that really doesn't matter, but could work as a fixed disquise self affect, meaning you only get human or hybrid form, but at will and only minor physical connection between appearances. You'd have to change clothes still though like a changeling from Ebberon. I'd see this as a their acting in hybrid form using it to get away from authorities by turning back to human and hiding/changing their outfit. Like of hijinks available for that!

Neraph Camouflage. When you make a ranged attack against a creature using a thrown weapon, or when you move at least 10 feet on your turn and attempt to shove a creature on the same turn, you can gain a bonus to the attack roll or Strength (Athletics) check equal to the creature's Dexterity modifier (minimum of +0). Once you apply this bonus to a roll against a creature, you cannot apply this bonus to another roll against the same creature until you finish a short or long rest. If the DM doesn't want to reveal the creature's Dexterity modifier, they can simply take the effect into consideration before telling you whether you hit or succeed.

I was going to offer Fey’ri as a race I’d like to see. I never got to play one in 3.5 due to being so rarely able to get a race with a LA over +1. So, 5e did an avariel subrace of elf in a UA. They gave them a 30 foot flying speed when not in medium or heavy armor, and they didn’t even offer a +1 to a stat. Honestly, I’d pull wings and a fly speed off fey’ri, instead given them spell-like abilities. Say, friends as a cantrip, charm person 1/day at 3rd level, and suggestion 1/day at 5th. Instead, let’s add three racial feats for fey’ri to get back their LA abilities. There’s a precedent set by the unofficially released Expanded Racial Feats that had a tanarukk feat for orcs, which was the Orc/demon hybrid also in the fey’ri’s book. There’s also an Urd Wings feat for kobolds to give them a fly speed. Let’s have the first fey’ri feats copy that. +1 Dex or Int, fly speed 30. Let’s have a feat that mimics the tielfings resistance feat. +1 stat, fire and poison resistance, adv against being poisoned. Lastly, have a feat that expands their spell-like abilities to add back in some of the other fey’ri spells. Alternatively, we could have fey’ri be a feat specifically for Avariels, like how tanarukk is a feat for orcs. We could just continue to mimic the feats above for simplicity’s sake. If we don’t want feat bloat, we just make one feat that adds a stat bump, fire resistance, and a minor spell. In the end, the race isn’t as flashy as 3.5, but you sacrificed levels in that edition to be that flashy.

Personally, one race (or subrace rather) I would like to see in 5e is the Dethagith. They're a living embodiment of the pact between the Githyanki, and Tiamat. They would basically nullify the Draconic sorcerer abilities for the most part, but would be something awesome on the battlefield.

I think a fly speed of 40 feet as well as getting spells feels a bit strong on initial reaction, especially having compared them to the winged tiefling variant, which has to trade away its spells for their innate fly speed of only 30, and thus giving a race both feels a bit strong. Edit: As for the whisper Gnome, a nice middle of what you proposed could also be solved referencing tieflings. Give them pass without trace once a day per long rest at first level, and then also give them silence at third when 2nd level magic is balanced to come online for all the casters anyway.

Whisper gnomes are described in third edition lore as being perceived as untrustworthy by the other races. Therefore, I don't think a charisma bonus is appropriate, I would give them a wisdom bonus instead. I would also give them proficiency in perception and stealth and the ability to cast silence once per long rest. In addition I would make their speed 30 ft as that was unusual for a small race in third edition and is present in fifth edition for races such as the goblin.

Here's my take on converting these 7 to 5e... Neraph: Ability Score Increase: Your Dexterity score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1. Age: ??? Alignment: Despite holding themselves above the general churn of Limbo, neraphim can't help having one chaotic component to their alignment. They try not to give in to their chaotic natures, and generally are very successful in this practice. Size: Neraphim are generally taller and much bulkier than Humanoids. Your size is Medium. Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a climbing speed of 30 feet. Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Aberrant: Your creature type is aberration rather than Humanoid. Standing Leap: Your long jump is up to 30 feet and your high jump is up to 20 feet, with or without a running start. Neraphim Weapon Training: You have proficiency with weapons that have the Thrown property. Neraph Camouflage: When attacking an opponent, neraphim can use a technique known as motion camouflage (also called neraph camouflage by other races), which predatory insects use to trick prey into thinking they are stationary even though they are moving closer. The target creature can be fooled into believing that the attacking neraph is in fact not moving closer, or moving closer only very slowly. Once per short rest, a neraph may make a camouflage attack. The first creature you hit during the first round of a combat may not apply their Dexterity bonuses to their Armor Class. Natural Armor: You have tough, leathery skin. When you aren't wearing armor, your AC is 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use your natural armor to determine your AC if the armor you wear would leave you with a lower AC. A shield's benefits apply as normal while you use your natural armor. Predatory Instincts: You have proficiency in the Perception and Investigation skills. Languages: You can speak, read, and write Neraph and Slaad, and one language of your choice between Common, Celestial, and Abyssal.

Asherati: Ability Score Increase: Your Constitution score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1. Age: ??? Alignment: Asheratis share a common concern for one another's welfare and are, therefore, good. Observing no specific rules when it comes to behavior, and having a proclivity toward thievery, asheratis are usually chaotic. Size: Ashertai are taller on average than humans and relatively slender. Your size is Medium Speed. Your base walking speed is 30 feet, and you have a burrowing speed of 30 feet. Natural Dryness: Asheratis drink water, but they are very dry creatures. To survive, they need to drink only one-quarter the amount of water per day that humanoids of their size normally require. Body Lamp: An asherati can make his skin glow at will, providing bright light out to 60 feet and shadowy illumination out to 120 feet. In a medium of loose soil, such as sand, dust, or ash, a peculiar quality of the light allows an asherati to make out solid objects up to 60 feet away. Under the sand, this light is sufficient for navigation and general identification of objects, but not for reading, recognizing individuals, or other similar feats of finer perception. This ability does not allow an asherati to see invisible creatures or creatures with concealment more easily than normal. Other creatures in the sand with an asherati do not gain this special sight, but they can see the sand take on a warm orange glow. Once per day, an asherati can bring his skin up to full brilliance so rapidly that it can dazzle all creatures within 30 feet for a minute. Creatures can avoid this effect with a successful Constitution save. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus Heat Endurance: You have resistance to fire damage. Desert camouflage: You are proficient with the Stealth skill and your proficiency is doubled when in hot, dry places such as deserts. Water Sensitivity: Asheratis hate being too wet, and their dry bodies absorb water rapidly when they are submerged. If completely wet, an asherati has disadvantage on all attack rolls, ability checks, and skill checks until they dry out. If an asherati is immersed in water, he cannot hold his breath and must immediately begin making constitution checks to avoid drowning. Languages: you can speak, read, and write Asherati, Common, Goblin, and Giant

Vril: Ability Score Increase: your Strength score increases by 2 and your Constitution score increases by 1 Age: ??? Alignment: Vril endure a harsh existence that demands each of them to remain self-sufficient, even at the expense of their fellows. They tend to be chaotic evil. Size: Like their cousins, the goblins, they are vicious little creatures. Your size is Small. Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet. Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray. Sonic Attunement: Resistance to thunder damage Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight. Vulnerability to Poison: As a defense measure, the drow bred the vril to be particularly susceptible to drow sleep poison and spider-kind venom. You are vulnerable to poison damage and have disadvantage against the poisoned condition. Skinshift: Once per long rest a vril can alter the consistency of its flesh for a minute. For the duration of the effect, you gain resistance against your choice of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage. Starting at 4th level and every four levels thereafter, a vril can use this ability one extra time per long rest (2 at 4th, 3 at 8th, 4 at 12th, and so on). Shriek: As an action, a vril can emit a horrible shriek, either as a 15-foot-radius burst centered on itself or as a 30-foot cone. Any creature in the affected area takes 1d6 points of thunder damage. A successful dexterity save, DC equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus, reduces the damage by half. The shriek’s damage increases when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6). Language: You can speak, read, and write Goblinoid and Undercommon

One of my favorite 3.5 races was the maenad from the Expanded Psionics Handbook. I liked psionics, but rarely got the chance to play them. Maenads were neat. They had an inherit wild side, that could come out as a burst of strength and a scream of rage. They looked like taller humans, but their skin had flecks of living crystal that gave them a glinting quality. This was before Twilight, when twinkling skin was cool*. (*It was probably never cool, but I thought living crystal was neat. A lot of my other favorites weren’t official. Green Ronan Publishing put out a book, Bastards and Bloodlines. A lot of the races were a common race crossed with a monstrous race. I liked the Spring Child a lot, which was a human or elf crossed with a dryad. The Watcher was also cool, which were dwarf/gargoyles that gave off a Disney Gargoyles vibe. The Piper was a halfling or elf/satyr, but 5e just flat out has satyr. I think my favorite in the book was a Sthien, which was an elf/naga cross. They ended up being an elven torso with a lower snake half, which resemble what many other properties called naga or lamia. I always wanted to play a snake person like that, but was never able.

Maybe it's already said in the text and I just didn't understand it due to being a non-native english speaker, and if so, I'm sorry. But the Asherati, they can breathe while submerged in sand, but not in water, so what would happen if they are submerged in sand under water? Like, emergency, circumstances, whatever, and they have to hide under water. Could they just, like, dive down to the bottom of the body of water and "dive" into the sand there and thereby negate the effects of being in water? Could they just breathe normaly now, because they're technically under sand? How does it work?

Fey'Ri sound like (Fey) Tieflings with Wings who are automatically Warlocks, who, if they want to play another Class, must meet Multiclassing requirements and only gain Features as Multiclass characters. This would take care of the spell-like abilities, while still allowing for some diversification of abilities.

Fey'ri: We do actually have sun elves in dnd. High elves (i think?) are split into sun elves and moon elves. So the fey'ri could be alternate traits for the high elves with tiefling inspiration. Here's my concoction: Fey'ri - ASI: +2 Dex, +1 Int - Fey'ri Magic: Thaumaturgy and one wizard cantrip of your choice. 3rd level, hellish rebuke 1/day. Intelligence as spellcasting ability - Darkvision - Perception proficiency - Fey Ancestry - Trance - Languages: Common, Abyssal, Elvish

@@baxterbruce9827 I'll give tanarruk a try first, I love throwing them at my players and love orcs in general. So my take for a pc version would most likely be like an half-orc variant that's like half tanarruk cuz going full tanarruk would be an issue with magic resistance and being fiend they would get wrecked against a paladin. - +2 Str, +1 Con - Brutal Critical - Fire Resistance - Intimidation proficiency - Darkvision 60 ft. - Fiend-Blood. You are humanoid but register as fiend for effects that find fiends (like divine sense). - Limited Magic Resistance (1/day).
