The sling attaches to a cuff that you place around your bicep. The hook from the sling hooks into the cuff, making the prone shooting more stable. Jealous of your find, that’s a keeper for sure

Additional comment: Butt Stock. Well, that extra piece is an important part of the rifle. It can be slid up and down. These guys have to go around a circuit then stop at a shooting station and shoot off hand. The go around the circuit again and then they have to shoot prone, etc. So the butt stock adjustable piece was designed for rapid adjustment. The clock does not stop when you are shooting. Not only that, they penalize you with time if you miss a target.

Nice rifle, it is an older Anschutz. Presently in Biathalon 95% of competitors use the newer Anschutz 1827 F The F means it has the straight pull Fortner action. The sling underneath is actually called the sling, the hook is so it can hook onto the shooters arm, actually to a band around the bicep. There should be another piece like a bungee to secure the hook to the buttstock so it doesn't flop around. The flap around the rear sight diopter is called the blinder and its purpose is obvious. The backpack straps are called the harness. Biathalon has all kinds of crazy rules about rifle weight, trigger pull, no magnified sights, even weather. Beautiful find, looking forward to see how it groups.

Well more comments. Hope I am not spamming you. I wanted to make a comment on your sights. They are the Anschutz International Sight Set. I have a set of those. Very precise, they were used in all the Anschutz competition products back in the 1980s. In fact. I bought my first Anschutz Model 54 (you also have a Model 54 receiver group). I bought mine with a prone stock. But the action is used on all their competition models. They are the top of the line, precision made #54 action. Anyway, I paid $600.00 for my #54, and had to buy the International sight set separate for an additional $150.00. That was a lot of money back then. FYI: An Anschutz Biathlon rifle now starts at or about $4600.00 (base price), no accessories. If I were you I would shoot it. Don't just put it back in the gun safe. It was made to rock and roll. Also, and I could be wrong about that extra piece of sling with the hook on it. I don't think they use those now?? , but I think the hook was used to hook onto an arm band on your body to help stabilize the rifle while aiming. These guys can't lock in like a normal 50 meter shooter can. They have to shoot 5 shots and take off skiing. Time is their enemy. Check out biathlon on KZbin.

Nope not a bother at all, I appreciate the interaction. I am still just learning myself. Do you have any thoughts on what this rifle might be worth on today’s market? It would make you cry if I told you how little I paid!

I am from South Texas so I would hardly consider myself an expert on biathlon, but I have followed that sport for 20 or 30 years and even competed in a summer biathlon in my younger days . Age here is 76. Anyway, that Anshutz biathlon rifle is a keeper. I wish I could find one like that. They are very precision made rifles. They are not a plinking rifle. That one was NOT used in the Olympics. Most biathlon participants do not go to the Olympics. If it had been used in a winter Olympics it would have an Olympic sticker on it from which ever games it was used in. Biathlon is big in Anchorage, Alaska, Minnesota and NY. It can be considered a regional sport. I wish I lived some place where they have snow . I would have been doing that sport for years. You can see it on KZbin if you like.

Hi Mike thanks for the comments. I don’t believe I said this was used in an actual Olympic event. It definitely was used in several NYS winter games and does bear the stickers from those games. Thanks

Not uncommon. I have an Anschutz 1427 Biathalon with sling, two harnesses, 6 mags and mag belt. It shoots extremely well in very cold conditions (warm , too.) I got mine just after the 1980 Olympics in Sarajevo. Although I prefer my Anschutz Model 2013 Super Match .22LR for competition shooting albeit in fixed positions. Good luck skiing. In Biathalon, it is said that teaching champion skiers to shoot is more effective than teaching champion shooters to ski.

BTW, you are dismounting the rifle poorly. You jut have to reach over your shoulder, grab the barrel and pull it up and over into shooting position an your shoulder.

One more then I will stop. I know you are tired of me. Yes it is an "epic find". Lucky you. I remember when the Fortner first came out. Please view: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ansch%C3%BCtz_1827_Fortner Also, please do not put a scope on that rifle. It is a specialty item and should remain as is.

@@WalnutandSteel I always wondered if the vids of them carrying the rifle on the back while running and sking were fake. That rifle should be slamming down hard on the spine. I know its impossible to run with a gun on your back.

I have the same rifle which my son uses for shooting competitions in Norway. They're easier to find in Norway due to the popularity of biathlon here. What makes this rifle a beauty is that it has the 54 action which is far more robust than the newer 64 action. The fortner actions are nice but more expensive and with all the bearings and complexity, the 54 bolt action is a survivalists choice.
