@ESP77769 I had the same Catalina 10.15.7. But, I've since recently regretted the upgrade. I posted a comment on his most recent video re installing Sonoma. I now find that my system randomly keeps freezing even when I'm not using it. I have to hold the power button to shut down/restart. I'm seeking to revert my system back to my unsupported Catalina.
@ESP777695 ай бұрын
@@Chuckeynorris I was wondering about that. I just went back to Catalina from Ventura, same issues, I used Wondershare Recoverit to get it back. My other iMac 21' has the OpenCore w/Monterey. They say if you do each Catalina-Big Sur-to Monterey- in Open Core successions, it works better for older systems, instead of the jump from Catalina right to another OS version. Catalina works just fine, just the unsupported apps nowadays. Maybe the new OpenCore 0.6.0 patcher works better. I bet a lot of people discovered this the hard way, as we did!! The Monterey OpenCore patch has been ok so far on my other 2013 iMac.

EXCELLENT TUTORIAL!! Followed the procedure to the letter. Successfully installed MacOS Sonoma 14.1 to my 2014 MacBook Pro Intel Core i7 that was tapped out at MacOS Big Sur. It was a bit tricky to get the OpenCore Legacy Patcher installed to the internal drive to eliminate the necessity for the USB drive to boot. If you don't get the pop-up window at conclusion of MacOS Sonoma install as shown in the tutorial simply run the Patcher again and select the internal drive for Patcher installation. Patcher will rebuild on the internal drive. Reboot the machine while holding down Option key and select the INTERNAL EFI drive for the reboot drive. Once reboot from the internal EFI drive is complete shut down the machine and restart - holding the Option NOT NECESSARY at restart. Machine will restart into MacOS Sonoma on the internal EFI drive and launch MacOS Sonoma normally. Enjoy!!

What did happen in my case is that when I turned it off and on again I got the prohibited sign for like 10 seconds. Then it booted to my login screen. A NVRAM reset solved that issue. Now when I boot I see the Macintosh HD image for just 3 seconds before it boots to my login screen and the fans will blow for like 6 seconds when logged in. But I'll take that as a "trade off"! So happy with this.

I've just been giving my Macbook Pro Early 2013 the acid test after installing Sonoma with the fantastic help from your tutorial and all I can say is I'm astounded! I'm a video editor so FCPX is what I use constantly, so I hammered it with all of the hardest plugins, effects, 3D titles on a 4K HEVC h.265 project rendering to an external hard drive. This is also whilst I had 4 heavy websites open including KZbin and I was playing videos in 4K whilst FCPX was rendering. FCPX did crash once early on, but that was after I bombarded the project with so many heavy effects that I wasn't surprised! (not my usual workflow!) But the system remained solid. I can now also play native 4K raw HEVC h.265 video footage directly in Finder without jittering or dropped frames (something that I could not do in Catalina) So, I just wanted to say, thank you so much for your tutorial, it works a treat! A very nice video and a clear explanation indeed but I thought it would be useful for readers to share my experience. I have a 15-inch 2015 Macbook Pro (Which I bought in 2018 through Apple when this model was about to be discontinued). I did exactly what you said in this video. I did install Sonoma perfectly, but with some side effects, I am not willing to compromise on. Netflix and Prime Video don't work on Safari anymore. However, they work fine on Microsoft Edge. Firefox is also very choppy, and some of its plugins, such as video downloader, don't work anymore. The system is a core-i7 quadcore with 16GB RAM, and yet fans turn on repeatedly. The battery drains very quickly, and the entire system is laggy. I'll restore my old system from time machine. I don't recommend Sonoma or any newer system on older Macs. There is no need to compromise a perfectly stable system just because it has an older OS.

After a few days use in hindsight I would not have done the upgrade to the computer I use in my work environment. I thought I had backed up everything without understanding that Time Machine does not back up hidden folders, including Application Support and the user Library, and that's where many apps store critical data, including 30 years of Quicken data files. Yes it's nice having a bright new fast computer, but I'm spending days figuring out how to reinstall applications critical to my business. All my fault of course, but in hindsight I should not have done the upgrade at this time. Otherwise, the iMac is super fast and since I already upgraded to 64MB of memory and a 2 TB SSD, soon to receive a Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C hub, I'm pretty confident the computer will continue to perform for several more years. Unclear what will happen when Apple releases an update to the OS. Hope that helps; good luck. @@SergeiJuganson

I had a 16 with over 15 GB of space after formatting and all, and it was too small. Second, there is a step on setting up Sonoma where the installer wants to look to import backups from Mac/TimeMachine or Windows--this step gets stuck; however, there is a selection to skip this squirreled away in the bottom left of the screen, so select that.

Living proof that not all heroes wear capes. I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to post this video. I've been pulling my hair out with two 2012 27" iMacs that have been used daily since purchase and capped out and could no longer be updated. I've been running several OS versions behind for quite some time. I have tried everything I could find to utilize the iMacs or at the minimum, the fantastic screens (alas, no Target Display Mode). Duet Display and other "alternatives" to push a display from my MacBook Pro to the iMacs was lacking. Too much lag and jitter to be functional. This worked like a charm. Now, I'm enjoying macOS Sonoma 14.1 on my 2012 iMac 27" and it's fantastic! I can use it as a standalone iMac or extended display from my MacBook Pro using Screen Mirroring. 5 Stars and 2 Thumbs UP!

IMPORTANT! Follow this video exactly ONLY if you want to install OpenCore to the machine you are making the installer on. The patcher needs to be set for the mac you intend to use OpenCore on (as the OpenCore website warns you about). If you are building the install disc for a different machine, you will not be able to use it with the other machine unless you select the correct build in the OpenCore settings as you will end up with either a host model installer, or with an installer set for the wrong mac model.

Something you might add: There are two levels of patches that must be installed: The EFI boot patches, to allow the system to boot, and the drivers for hardware that aren't supported in the new system, the "post install" patches. There used to be a SIMPLE way to do this back int he day which was to start the machine you wish to upgrade in target mode and connect to a newer machine and run the installer to the main drive of the target machine ad then disconnect, reboot and viola! But then Apple got smart to that and then you had to simply remove the HD front he machine altogether and install a new system via the newer machine and then simply re-install the HD back int he older machine and that worked well for many years but then they added chipset checking software so it kicks out an error and never reboots which is why you have to now install the Core Legacy Patcher.

Did this about 3 weeks ago (October 2024) on an Early 2015 MacBook Pro that was stuck in macOS Monterrey. Updated it to Sequoia. Runs great! The process was very easy and everything worked just fine. I did what a previous comment said and granted full disk access to Terminal and to OpenCore Patcher just to be sure, and the installation went smoothly! And of course installed the root patches to disk after completing the installation. The only quirk I'm living with now is that if I use the Bluetooth microphone on my Sony headphones, my audio is choppy. I have to select "Built in microphone". But I can still use the headphones for sound output. And the built in mic works great anyway, so this is a minuscule trade-off for being able to run the latest version of macOS on unsupported hardware.

Thanks for the awesome video. Out of curiosity: What are the benefits of installing Sanoma on older macs/imacs? Do the system requirements mean that things run slowly on these older machines? (Or a majority of the new features don’t even run?) Due to the method of installing, does it then allow further updates through the Apple Store? Or is that all locked out & any further updates need to be done through OpenCore?

The only option it offers is to reinstall OS X. I tried using my OpenCore stick to reload Sonoma, but it said that the HD was incompatible. So, I'm stuck. Right now, I'm trying to let it reload OS X and maybe then I can retry OpenCore + Sonoma. After that, I guess I'll have to give up on it. Apple wins. Just tried having it re-install OS X, but now can't get past agree to Terms and Conditions (Agree button greyed out). So, I re-tried running OpenCore to set up Sonoma again, but it still says the HD is incompatible. So, it's a brick, unless I can find another way around.

I have a laptop totally usable from 2008 i havent been able tonuse it due to unable to upgrade softwares such as safari, music software etc but it is capable i never understood the software limitation which serves only to apple’s interest. Apple is already expensive to invest so it should have a lifespan on the hardware not the software. Thanks to these guys now i will be able to utilise it.

Search “How to install MacOS Ventura without a usb” it shows you how to do it. If you have any questions lmk bc I had to spend almost two hours coding and troubleshooting but I figured it out, But when you’re done installing the program you switch to this video and carry on as usual.

You need a USB there is a way around it it's a bit more complicated but it does work if you have a USB make sure you have at least 32GB

Will this make my macos slow?
@carlosmaldonado-gr7ks8 ай бұрын

Macbook Air mid 2012. Now a fully fleddged laptop again, on Sonoma 14.5. It's not just a quirky typewriter. Thank you so very much. Now to get the old 27" Imac thats in the shed working again. Totally happy!

How’s the machine performing? Got my hands on an early 2015 MBA recently.

@@mayowao The macbook air has been working like a dream. No issues at all. The Imac is slower to start up, but when running is great. The patchers are updated automatically, ( manual agreement) and load with no issues. Honestly saved two older machines. So far all the hardware has run fine, like the wirless-no issues. Hope that helps. also, the website has the compatability for various macs so you should check it out too. For me its been great.

@@WhiteCanary-b8p thanks a lot for the feedback. Its very appreciated. Got Ventura running on mine with no issues just to be safe cos I was worried Sonoma might cause notable lag or stress the CPU/board.

Yes you can do it, although there are many problems, especially with Sonoma. First thing is that it will run VERY VERY slow until post root patches. And the main problem is that after you download it, it deletes open core. So then you can’t even do the post install. But you would think that you could just reinstall it, WRONG! You won’t have ANY WiFi no matter what. So you can’t redownload it. Making it nearly impossible to use. I would recommend spending the extra $5 on a usb drive.

It worked perfectly! I had seen that a few people were having some glitches with Sonoma, so I just updated my 2014 MacBook Air to Ventura. If all goes well, I will move up to Sonoma in a few weeks. Thank you, thank you!

Anson, thank you for this video. Your content is straight and to the point. There's another creator on here that has many tutorials on this patcher, but there's just too much going on in the video that it's intimidating. With this one video I was able to install Sonoma on my 2011 MBP 8,1 with i5 processor. It works like a charm (prior to installation I upgraded the RAM to 16gb and the hard drive to SSD).
