IMPORTANT: LINUX is a very good option for your old Mac if you're ready to move away from macOS. Since Apple hardware is really only meant to run Apple software, it's more difficult to repurpose old Macs once Apple drops software support compared to other, less restrictive, hardware setups but, macOS is built on Unix, which is quite similar to Linux. With a little bit of work you can also install Windows pretty easily on Intel Macs (not M series). I actually installed Windows 11 on this 2013 Macbook Pro as well - video is in my "Unsupported macOS Installations" playlist. Side note: As some of you have noticed, I say "Big Sur" funny. We speak a lot of Spanish and Portuguese in my house and, well, "Big Sir" just doesn't sound right to me... Hopefully you can understand the rest - full English captions as well :)

One other point you didn’t mention is that using older machines is better for the environment. Even if you do get your old one recycled when you update it is not as good. Of course there has to be a point where you have to accept that the hardware is just too old and slow, but until that point it is reasonable to expect support for as long as possible.

Totally! I actually really wanted to include that point as well but just couldn't bring myself to do it with the 3 screens lit up in the video, burning through electricity. I really respect the environmental side of the argument, however, and wish I did more to reduce my own footprint.

Have a 2.6Ghz i7 one myself on Monterey. Even with 16GB and SSDs Ventura and Sonoma both have a very sluggish interface even with root patches and boot slow. I don’t think Ventura adds enough to be worth upgrading to and Sonoma is very resource intensive.

And I'm typing this on a prehistoric MacBook Pro Mid 2009 (5,3, 2.66 GHz, 512GB SSD, 8GB RAM) now running Monterey 12.7.5, courtesy of OCLP 1.5.0. Monterey is still supported by Apple until Nov 2024. I would've gone instead for the later Ventura or Sonoma but apparently my old Mac would then need a USB 2.0 hub to be added (fuck that!). Monterey is running perfectly and will do me just fine for now. Kudos to Dortania/OCLP - power to the people!! 😎. Nuts to sneaky greedy Apple, shame on you! Actually, I'm not so fussed about continually getting newer OS versions per se. Most of them just bring another batch of overhyped gimmicky new features anyway, often pretty useless at that. Yes, any performance gains are always welcome yet not usually astonishing. For me, the main or only driver to update an OS comes from the updated or new apps I want or need to use on the platform. Updated apps typically bring much more usefulness to the party than updated OSs, yet don't support the old OSs and machines you want to run them on, doh! So, the order of my dependency is Software : OS : Hardware. The big players in all of those are all pretty much as bad as each other, with the common and complicit aim of 'screw you suckers'.

I don't think that there is much that could be done about support as it is a financial issue. I really hope that the EU legislation forces them to put easily user replaced batteries in iPhones. They will fight that tooth and nail.

As Anson points out, Apple deliberately makes moves to force dedicated product user’s to buy their newer products and unfortunately, that generally comes at a much higher cost than the Mac or other device being replaced. Yes, older Macs can be given a second life by switching it over to any Linux variant; however, it comes at a cost of loosing out on software only meant to run on MacOSes. I have 5 unsupported Macs, two of which are MacBook Pros with 17” screens. I love both of them and really dislike Apple’s move to decrease screen sizes as well as purposefully insuring compatibility with second source displays. As a retired person; many of use still actively using their Macs can no longer afford the cost of buy Apple’s new Mac systems whose price tags are astronomical in many cases. Secondly, but off topic, Apple’s move to “solder everything in place” on everything, intentionally forces users to upgrade at higher costs to make sure their Macs have a potential longevity beyond their 7 year “guaranteed???” life expectancy, a.k.a., planned obsolescence. I vehemently oppose Apple’s locking down of Mac components so that technically capable users can perform their own memory, both RAM and HDD/SDD retrofits, along with things that typically fail like graphics chips in the MacBook Pro 17” (Late 2011). So, I am looking at using the Open Source Legacy Updater to bring at least one of my Macs up to date even at a cost of loosing some functionality constrained by older or missing components like Metal. It’s a price that is paid by anyone venturing forward on unsupported OSes. It does not stop there though. One is forced to consider unsupported update vs. buying new equipment when software companies limit the span of MacOSes they will support. I think this is most significantly the case with Music Production and DAW software. i am in that group. I was really angry when Intuit would not provide TurboTax Deluxe after 2017 for Macs running MacOS 10.15 (Catalina). I will simply do whatever is necessary to give my Macs an extended life commensurate with the quality Apple puts into their products. I would love to hear Lewis Black do a Rant Broadcast on Apple alone. I am not alone in my view of the Tim Cook lead of Apple Corporate greed. Ask yourself this simple question. What would you do if major car manufacturer’s only supported their cars and truck costing upward to $125K+ were to redirect themselves towards producing vehicles whose life is only 7 years? Many car loans are now 7 years. Americans need to stand up to corporate greed, and product planned obsolescence.

The biggest great effect is saving the environment. There should be an international law requiring Apple, Dell, and all machine makers physically take back old computers. The international law should require all of them to environmentally dispose of old machines. The cost of that process would make it cheaper to support old machines and encourage customers to maintain them. People will still buy new machines but the environment wins with this scenario. I keep my old MacBook Pro 2009 because I don’t want it in some landfill polluting the earth.

I love how Apple booted Nvidia in a lovers spat and now Nvidia is eclipsing them in business value. I do get from a business standpoint, the R&D to support all these old legacy machines...and their poor performance running newer stuff. And, here, thanks to OCLP, they have folks doing the work for them. Apple could kill OCLP but it is no skin off their nose to let it do its thing. The same scenario is developing on the Windows side. SO MANY PCs cannot run Windows 11 (or the future 12) so now people are hacking them. Though, that is developing slowly as people keep sticking to Windows 10. Apple would love to sell more machines. But they have no interest in making the new machines more affordable and offering a good trade value for the old machines to get them out of service. When my 2012 MacBookPro dies and my 2013 MacPro gets too flaky (both running OCLP), I will consider a refurb Mac. So far, the only casualty of OCLP and Ventura on my 2013 MacPro has been VMware Fusion.

Yes, exactly. There was a time that, 10 years after a computer was produced, it was essentially completely irrelevant and out of date but, many computers made from 2010 to 2020 can still seriously hang with modern technologies and, the question, it whether or not companies like Apple will change their policies to reflect that. For now, however, unsupported installations or even Linux installations, seem to be the way to go.

I've done this with my late 2013 15" Macbook Pro. Generally very easy and no issues apart from one... And it's quite specific. I use hot corners and in particular the bottom right puts the display to sleep which also turns off the keyboard backlight. I've tried disabling just about everything and it will still fail, it'll work if you come back a few minutes later, even had it last hours. Other times it coms back to an empty desktop and you can't do anything, you can still hear the audio playing. I've used this feature for years, must be over 15, I don't remember when I enabled it. Now, I did an upgrade... Maybe it would have been better to do a fresh install as it might be some other non-default setting I don't care about. But I've tried disabling any sleep etc, it doesn't go to sleep, the audio remains as I say. Other than that, not had any issues.

I'm wondering if Open Core will still be an option, once Apple drops support for the M1 chip and am also curious how long they will support their hardware in general, since moving to their own custom SOC. Eventually, I'd anticipate that when Apple drops support for the last Intel based machines, that Legacy patcher will no longer be a viable option for either unsupported Intel hardware or future unsupported M1 hardware. It'll be interesting to see whether Apple supprts it's devices beyond 7 years, given the move away from Intel or if the development community will be able to continue to build software to allow for support, after Apple drops it's M1 chip support.

@AnsonAlexander
@AnsonAlexander Ай бұрын
So, a few things here... First, Windows updates are free if you know where to go - not officially but also not punished or enforced. Second, Apple essentially forces their operating system on their hardware. Windows doesn't even make all of the hardware for their OSes - meaning users can repurpose their old computers in a number of different ways more easily. Third, Apple makes very durable and long lasting hardware (especially if you buy with the upgrades) and their main company policy is creating lifelong users so, it would make sense for them to support their hardware longer or risk losing customers - as you can see their are quite a few defectors in the comments. Obviously it's up to them but I believe this video makes a strong case for Apple to set the standard higher for supporting their hardware.

The problem is they are too reliable and last too long, so they need to make it artificially obsolete in the hopes that you buy another one, and they have continued revenue. I think that’s why they are selling the M processor models with such low memory. In the hopes it’ll become obsolete quicker. I’d personally prefer it if they supported new Macs for perhaps 8 years, then allow you to pay to upgrade to future OS versions (or at least security patches and the latest Safari) after that point, but they won’t necessarily have all the features of the latest hardware.

You hit the nail on the head exactly. If their hardware wasn’t so durable, this wouldn’t be a problem haha! Good ideas and thoughts on the M series chips as well!

My MacBook Pro 2.7 GHz Core i7 15-Inch (Late 2016) cost about $2,300 and is now worth 10% of that if I’m lucky. Progress happens. Love it or hate it, take it or leave it. New OSs use new hardware capabilities that keep them from working without those new features. Sucks, but lack of progress would be worse.

Apple is probably not the worst when it comes to software support for older computers. However, they spend a lot of resources and time promoting how green and eco-friendly they are, so I think they should support devices until they are technically obsolete . This might have a greater eco-impact than eliminating leather. For me, the lack of upgradability, especially for desktops, is more annoying. I am not entirely sure who buys desktops these days, but I feel quite certain that they would like to keep a version of Dropbox/OneDrive/Google Drive local. As an Apple customer, this is utopia; you have to rely on external disks or NAS and live with the 8 GB of RAM that is standard for so many models.

Great video! And very good points. Everything in the Apple Support world is abritary. It's going to be even worse when M1 which will still work perfectly will get support dropped in 2026 and 2028, and there will probably be no way to patch it due to the differences with the way Apple Silicon Macs work. I personally run a 2014 Macbook air (which I'm typing this from actually) in addition to my 2021 16 in m1 max macbook pro. It breathes new life into it and makes it a great throw in the bag machine. Yes it's slow but it gets the job done. I also have Sonoma dual booted with Windows 11. I am definitely going to try to install macOS 15 on this machine if it ends up supporting the Intel architecture. I will say though, I wouldn't recommend non tech savy people use opencore. To use it I recommend you have at least a little knowledge with computers. Put opencore on an old machine and it will breathe new life into an old machine and make it a great secondary backup machine.

Well, if you’re running Big Sur or earlier, unsupported Sonoma will definitely increase security. If you’re still running a supported OS like macOS 13 or 12, they will be a bit more tailored to your computer and will provide good security. The main thing, is to make sure you’re running updates for your unsupported Mac when they come out.

Correction: The battery gate had nothing to do with battery life of old phones. Apple clarified why they did this and it’s much more complicated and nuanced. TLDR: when old battery cannot provide enough of the power for the chip, the phone would restart. It would seem for end user that the phone is buggy, but at the core of this was simply old battery that wasn’t able to provide enough power for the chip. Apple decided to limit performance of old phones in order for them to not restart randomly during normal operation. That’s the reason why it limited performance of old phones with older battery. Plain and simple.
@AnsonAlexander
@AnsonAlexander Ай бұрын
I understand you're getting into the technical details here but, a battery not being able to provide enough power to the chip and causing rapid restarts, certainly appears to the end-user as a battery problem and, they should have avoided releasing an OS that causes these restarts on phones made just 2 years earlier.
Ай бұрын
@@AnsonAlexander Yes, I agree. It should have been communicated better, but I want to clarify, Apple provided reasoning why they did that and for whathever reason, maybe because its Apple, and there is always this need to write about scandal of some sorts, but for whathever reason I keep hearing how Apple tried to slow down old phones to force people to buy new one. And thats just not accurate.

Apple's planned obsolescence and superglued/integrated components on my 15" 2016 MacBook Pro (with its poorly-designed butterfly keyboard) lay waste to their claims of being eco-friendly and zero carbon. I've got a 2012 Mac Mini running Linux Mint and it works great. There are small issues like the SD card reader not working but as a home pc it works for everything I need. It's not so great on a laptop because sleep doesn't always work, battery life is poor and the webcam doesn't work. It's a driver issue. I've just left MacBook Pro on Big Sur. So far all the apps I need still work but eventually devs will stop supporting it and fewer apps will work. At that point I'll either have to save enough to buy a new Mac, or try what you've suggested or put Linux on it. Or just retire it to a shelf. In my experience hacking my iPhone 3G to get iphone OS 4, it just slowed the device badly and made for a worse experience. I do think with Apple that it's better to get a new device when the time comes. It's less hassle and you get all the new features. The only problem is, having the money to upgrade.....

Near as I can tell Apple is pushing security updates to my older MacBook Pro. I just don't get the new operating system. Why Mac? Very difficult for a hacker to get in the pants of a Mac compared to a PC. And that's its cost vs. effective value attraction. The Mac/iPhone is programmed to automatically receive and incorporate security updates as they are pushed out by Apple, which occurs frequently, and then once a year Apple pushes out a complete new operation system (OS) to nullify anything a trojan horse tries to accomplish. And it takes your finger print to unlock the Mac and face reconition to open the iPhone and the iCloud is password encrypted. The Mac "key chain" app is encrypted to manage your passwords. Then one can choose to have any folder or file encrypted and then separately encrypt the Macs SSD. iCloud is password encrypted. If your Mac goes missing you might be able to track its exact location or press a bottom on your iPhone and it can turns you Mac into a useless brick. Well a decent Macbook Pro (MBP) is 4K if you want the necessary RAM and SSD to edit a lot of video . Going in you figure a 5-yr life cycle for the MBP + the, iCloud subscription and probably a battery swap out. Adding a new OS to an older and dolder MBP. At some point one or more the dated Mac components won't have the needed capability to deal with the updated Apple software and firmware changes. Go into any collage class and it's all Mac Book Airs being used by the students...and they probably have internet, an iPhone and an Apple Watch. Less then 30% of the high school kids finish collage. The majority of the ones who do graduate will probably find the high Apple costs to be within their budget and they will probably own Apple stock as an offset.

So amazing that hundreds of thousands people (see the views on my unsupported install video) are still using their hardware more than 7 years after buying them.
