Hello! This may be a silly question, but are polar blue parrot cichlids the same thing as a regular convict cichlids? When I see them at stores theres babies labeled convicts that look just the same as a polar blue parrots but idk if they are the same thing.... love your videos btw!
@TheAquaticCoder2 жыл бұрын
@@Lexie-Louu Thanks for the compliment! No they are not the same thing but they are close. Polar Parrots can be seen as a "short body" variation of convicts. They posses most of the same traits except are known to be a little less aggressive (but not always). When both are small though they probably look similar although small parrots still have the beak like mouth. They might just not be as familiar with calling them Polar Parrots or they think labeling them as convicts might sell better.

I have two polar parrots (both female, I think) and one platinum parrot. One of my polars bred with the platinum (who is obviously male), so I'm interested in these little oddballs growing up and potentially showing a whole grab bag of different features of their heredity as they age. What's wild is that they bred as basically juveniles themselves; the female is generously quarter sized and the male is a bit larger than a silver dollar. I've had the polars since about April and the platinum since August. They bred in a ~20 gallon cube community tank and I quickly rehomed the proud but violent parents and their kids to their own 20 gallon long to avoid a reign of terror in their original home. A simple sponge filter seems to be the best with regards to the fry.

Would they be able to live alongside yellow convicts(which I’ve heard I less aggressive than other convicts)..? Or alternatively, go with smaller tank mates in a variety of breeds, and introduce new fish and evolve the tank periodically, … is this possible in a 70 g planted tank with the appropriate amount of caves and landscaping for the inhabitants ? larger tetras, platys, a couple of clown loaches, a few angelfish,, potentially smaller peaceful African cichlids in the mix, danios- could a polar fit into this type of community tank if it was well considered and done sensibly? Or is this likely to end catastrophically and therefore not even worth considering. How territorial are they over their individual caves and hidey holes? I’ve kept mbuna successfully in a heavily decorated tank in the past, but it would be wreckless to keep them with other breeds, or move the tank decor about… they have very defined social behaviours, and I found it fascinating to watch over years, and get to know each fish- I’d like to watch a complex social system community tank evolve, which also includes fish with personality, like polars. They could be a dream fish in this case. However, on KZbin, I’m finding many people are keeping them in single breed set ups , heavily stocked, with little decor.. I’m not sure if this is because of the breeds temperament being generally unsuited to community environments , or because everyone is taking advantage of their tendency to breed like rabbits.. or, perhaps even struggling to manage the amount of fry being produced? If they are good community fish, then that fact should be promoted, as from my perspective as a polar novice, im seeing a disproportionate amount of keepers with single breed set ups- at first glance looking not too dissimilar to a classic mbuna aquarium. Just for very different reasons it seems. Is the breeding thing potentially a problem? I don’t particularly want 30 of these fish in 18 months time. Sorry to have been long winded, but there really isn’t too much information about these guys yet- and so far, you’re the most comprehensive channel on the subject. Maybe make a video about it- like I say, it’s all a bit ambiguous aside from a few “top ten tank mates” type videos, with no definitive answers as yet.. P These fish look incredible. I hope the rampant home breeding doesn’t lead to diminished quality of specimens available on the market Thanks

That's correct. The actual origin isn't 100% known from what I read when researching. Seems to be mostly theories. I think aggressiveness wise this combination will work in most situations. With that size Oscar it should be fine for a long time. The worry I have is once the Oscar is fully grown. There may be a chance the Polar Parrot could fit in their mouth. So in summary my answer is yes it will work until the Oscar is fully grown. At that point it is a risky combination. It may or may not work then.

@TheAquaticCoder2 жыл бұрын
Hi there, if this is happening the only option really is to separate the parents once the eggs start to hatch. Probably between 2-4 days after you first see the eggs. You could remove the babies once they hatch but I think removing the parents temporarily is easier. This requires you to have a 2nd tank though. The other option is to get plants with a lot of cover like Java moss but there is no guarantee that this will work.

I ended up with male and female. They bred within 2 weeks of having them. They've taken care of babies. My question is: Is it normal for the black stripes to fade? They are vibrant with other coloration, but it seems like the stripes fading.

That's cool to hear they bred so quick! I have not seen that in mine. It could be that the pattern is just changing as they grow or even from breeding. If they look vibrant I don't think there is any reason for concern right now. Best of luck on the babies!

I bought a few of them.... They were advertised to get around 8 inches and googled it and it was the same information.... These things are extremely aggressive and don't grow from my experience..... The lone one standing killed the other... And as small same size as the other cichlids... It was absolutely dominating!!! Eventually everything else grew and it grew but only to right around 2 inches at max... I feed Omega one... Frozen everything... Even flakes and chopped up krill very small for it to eat.... These do not grow.... They won't get more than maybe 3 inches and that's pushing it...

Are these also called "jelly Bean" cichlids?
@TheAquaticCoder2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is a potential name for them but more common for Blood Parrots that are artificially dyed different colors.

Do il have to séparer the baby from the father or the Mothers or the 2 ans Do they eat the baby
@TheAquaticCoder2 жыл бұрын
The parents I have did not eat the babies and protected them well from other fish. I don't think you need to separate them for this species. It might depend on the specific fish though
