With all due respect, working at the bar and owning the bar are very different. So many people have had their livelyhoods ruined by mobsters who extort them mercilessly for "protection" money. Sure, they might buy some drinks and joke around with the staff, but behind the scenes, the owner is coughing up huge amounts of money for "operating in their territory" or whatever. This doesn't apply to every wise guy or every affiliate. I'm sure plenty were genuinely good dudes; however, at the end of the day, gangs do way more harm than good.

I genuinely love your videos Larry, you are an amazing guy. To add onto the "police/feds looking the other way on what the mob was doing" answer, this is actually a leftover thing from history. A guy named Lucky Luccianni was a huge mob boss in New York around the 1930s-1940s. The government had been fighting with the mob for a while, and both had their ways of screwing with each other. Government would make threats or some arrests, the mob would organize a dockworkers strike and shut down trade coming into New York. When the US entered WWII the Government approached Lucky Luccianni and pretty much said we will leave you guys alone if the mob doesnt interfere with the US logistics chain at all (IE: Closing down the docks because of a strike) Its kinda why the mob had a big boom from the 40s-60s, the government pretty much partnered with them and then was trying to clean up from the war and gave the mob breathing room for a few decades.

I like to say I'm informed and it's hard for even me to find information on cases that should be public. A lot of people only go by what they see online but I feel if it was easier or people were better informed on where to look maybe there would be less misinformation spreading!

Excellent. Suggest visiting your public library research librarian. There are databases that charge but also a lot of info from state court system but you need to know where to look. Also research librarian a your nearest law school library can possibly help.

The Godfather was to me a very interesting book. The movie did glorify the mob, and the book did too to a certain degree. But when I read the book I got the feeling of a darwinian struggle where everyone fights for survival. The Corleone-family in the novel aren't necessary "the good guys", they are just what we focus on in the novel.

It's extremely long and a bit slow, but it shows how the corruption in the police department, government, schools, unions, and news media works. It's a bit dated since it's in the early 2000's, but a lot of it is still extremely relevant today.

The Wire is arguably the greatest show ever made. It’s more about the system that feeds and depends on crime than the dealers themselves, and shows how utterly futile the war on drugs really is. It’s aged pretty well too. If it wasn’t for the use of pagers by a particular drug crew (you’ll have to watch it to see how and why they do that) and the lack of smart phones it could easily be set today rather than 20 years ago.

One question I haven't heard anyone who was in the life answer is when you joined up with the mob and started doing crimes did you know you would get caught? Like did you see an inevitability of going to prison or do people in the life have a veil over their eyes?

Down deep I knew I would be caught or dead by 50. I just didn't care. I never had that fear of death or prison.
