Love the George Harrison stuff. A buddy of mine who used to play with Robert Cray was telling me about the time they opened for Clapton in LA and were hanging out backstage with Eric and a bunch of other heavy hitters when George walked in and "a hush fell over the room." He was amazed. George Harrison was a god.

Your description of George's presence in D&B is so powerful. I watched the Scorsese HBO documentary on George a number of times. George had such a great spirit about him and was a very giving person. Obviously, you know because you were in his presence and are a witness to it, as you so perfectly described.

I was re-watching this one, as I download all of your videos, and as a Beatle Fan, I feel you described George (Mr Harrison, to me) with all the dignity he deserved. He was never pompous, he was never “too cool for you“ - though his Liverpudlian sarcasm could be dry enough to paint your mouth with talcum powder - he understood as well as anyone could, Beatlemania and the incongruities that followed such an opulent, outpouring of total abandon of one’s faculties. It bemused him, but he understood it. The aura he carried was certainly partially that he was a Beatle; but, it was also largely because of the man he was. He knew the life he led was not the life he wanted to lead (the smoking, the pot, the brandy, the cocaine… The “Ones he couldn’t throwback“ - which Olivia has intimated “tried” her love throughout their marriage, though their love was always just as strong… She, like anyone in her place, found it difficult to accept that “Beatles will be Beatles.” He had no misconceptions that entertainers were just that - entertainers. He knew he was not a political leader or anything more than a Gentlemen Gardener who made it big… Really big. He worked hard in the beginning, so I am sure he felt he deserved his props from fellow musicians. Still, the gentleman and magnanimous nature of that gentleman brought that reverent aura to him to which I believe you refer - that is an awful lot of pontificating from someone so removed as I am from the situation. Feel free to correct or delete me at any time ha ha. I’m sure my wife does ha ha ha. We all know from his infamous tour of 74 (?) That it was the smoking, drinking, snorting and choking pot that led to his cancer (propelled even faster by the assault upon him with the knife) to his untimely death. I would love to see his calm, peaceful face when he finally sees The Creator! So, in closing, blah blah blah blah blah blah - it’s your show big guy! Keep up the great work - both of you! Excuse my usual verbosity… Roctor

Hi Folks,,, Re Sweet Spots; People talk about guitars and many don’t realise that you don’t know how good any guitar is until you’ve played it reasonably loud and see how it resonates between notes ; you find the sweet spots ; how well it sings. This was always the ultimate test for any guitar . Your mention of sweet spots reminded me of this. It’s a mystery why some do & some don’t,,without pedals etc just guitar & amp cranked up ,,, just to where it’s breaking up, “ sweet spot territory” 🥂Cheers

In my view, something that George didn't have in his DB and Friends days was deep South Soul because he was British. In those few video shots of George's face during the D/B performances, he appears to be deeply intent on studying that influence however. Here was a Beatle who was such a great artist, but was content to be in back just soaking that soul up. Humility....very impressive.

I believe that on the older Strats that the switch position you are speaking of puts the bridge pickup and middle pickup out of phase. Which makes a very distinctive sound quality. A side story about Peter Green whom had purchased a Les Paul from a famous store in england. Took the guitar back saying that it was not as loud as he thought it should be. The guitar tech removed the neck pickup to check this problem out. How ever when he put it all back together he had put the pickup in backwards putting it out of phase with the bridge pickup. Creating yet another distinctive sound quality. Thank You Bobby and Coco for more of this history.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share your memories. They are fascinating insights into the music of the 60's and 70's , when I was 50 years younger! It seems that music hasn't really got any more soulful since. There's been a lot of technical flash, manipulation and shareholder friendly promotion but much of it is sanitised and recycled, from an age where performing and recording were far more organic and spiritual. For my taste, Stevie Ray for blues and Wilco, for just being Wilco, are hard acts to follow.

I love all kinds of music, and as I've grown older it has expanded, but for me there only a few albums that can really touch my soul. Top Two: Layla and Alone Together. My sister took me to a Dave Mason concert in San Diego when I was in middle school, and I wore out Alone Together out and learned how to play the guitar mostly starting from there. Then it was on to Layla - and wore that out too and always wondered how that all came down - facinating and thank you. Just wondering if you have touched on Dave's connection to D&B, EC, you and the whole scene at that time? Lately too I've gotten into the Wrecking Crew stuff, Glenn Campbell, Louis Shelton, etc? Once again thanks, love your honesty and little giggles! What fun and a so welcome, needed thing now more than ever!

I saw them in 1969. A brilliant night, five rows from the front. When Delaney introduced the band, the crowd applauded each member, but when he introduced George you could have heard a pin drop. And this was in LIVERPOOL ! Such was the effect that the man had on people. We knew even then that this was special. I still maintain that he looked like a prince and was luminous ! One brave girl screamed 'George !' and everyone, including George, laughed, and the band kicked in again. Love and Peace.

Thanks for your words on George. I ALWAYS was influenced and inspired by him. On Feb 9 , 64, I didn't even know what an electric guitar was, then life was electrified and George had a part in that. Funny, a couple years later I started playing in garage bands but we didn't play Beatle songs (except for Twist & Shout) because they were all too hard to learn. Years later I graduated into that and I got to see George play in 1974. It was Gorgeous George for sure. Cheers

Speaking of loud, I remember seeing Hall & Oates at the Bottom Line (of all places) and they were incredibly LOUD -- but clear as a bell, so you're right, there is definitely a sweet spot with that. And then after the show, my sister and I were getting into a cab outside the club and who jumps in beside us but Bobby Keys. lol Then he asked us if we wanted to go to a party just up the street, so off we went! Only in New York... And that thing about listening--that's so interesting because I always loved Levon Helm for that. You could SEE him listening as he played. Anyway, I love your stories, you guys! I think I'm addicted!

Years ago, I read an interview with EC when he mentioned the sweet spot on the Strat pickups between the middle and bridge pickup. Interview was back in the 70's, I think in Guitar Player. I have a 59 Strat and have the same spot on mine. You're right, there's not a notch....it's a spot you find with your ear and try not to bump it to either pickup.

In the spring of '79 he and his band are on tour with the Cuban band, Irakere, and they come to play Boston College on a Saturday night. So me and my buddies get to the show early and are sitting on the floor of the Roberts Center gymnasium about 10 rows from the stage. Irakere was great. I love those Cuban rhythms and vocals. Then the Stills band comes out with Bonnie Bramlett, Mike Finnegan, Lala, et al. So my question to you is, given your connection to Bonnie, Stills, and Lala, was there ever an offer for you to play keyboards in that band instead of Finnegan?

Bobby is correct, Brownie was a 50s Strat and they only had 3 position switches. 5 position switches didn't come until the late 60s. Hendrix supposedly used a match to jam his in place. Bell Bottom blues has that out of phase sweet spot going on. The sweet spot is important. Fender Deluxe Reverbs don't sound good till you get the volume on 5. But it's too loud by then at home and the windows rattle.

Great chat. Eric Clapton has gone on the record and spoken about finding that sweet spot between the two pickups for the banjo tone, I think he was referring to Bell Bottom Blues. I don’t think he had any influence on Fender making the 5 way switch though.
@Marcus_C513 жыл бұрын
I agree. Yes, as always Bobby you've got interesting insights on so many things. Yeah, the 3 position sweet spot vs. the 5 position-hmmmm, it makes alot of sense. I used to have a 3 position in one of my old Strats and then switched it over to the 5, now I'm thinking wow, you're onto something with that slight variation of position. "Bell Bottom Blues" and "I Looked Away" have that sublime sweet spot tone for sure. So pretty!

Bobby, I've known about that "Sweet spot" that Eric used to get that switch right in that spot. Since the 70's. It must have been mentioned somewhere...maybe some mag?
