We have the opposite problem today - nothing can be a little bit 'out' (unless you're Jack White). If that solo was tweaked back into tune it I wouldn't be able to listen to it! In any case, the song's about unrequited (out of tune) love! This channel is an absolute treasure trove thanks to Bobby's photographic memory 👍

A discount store near me went out of business in 1982 when I was 14 and had a clearance sale with 75% off everything. I had become aware that Eric Clapton was a world class guitar player, not just a pop singer, a year or so earlier so I thought I would buy an EC record. All they had left was 8 tracks; the vinyl was all sold out. I picked up a copy of Backless. My Uncle handed me an 8 track and told me that was the one I wanted. I bought both. The one my Uncle handed me was Layla. It became my favorite album of all time and still is today. Such a fantastic band with such great songs. Thanks for the stories...I'm really enjoying them.

Well my little secret is out,, from when I first heard it some 48 years or so ago,, to me nobody ever mention it or write about it anywhere and even when Eric did those tours playing songs of Layla which he almost never did : still this song was an exception ,, so it felt like it’s still my secret go to song 😊 but then I found twice in concert , once in Paris & I think in the US somewhere where they played it !!!! I am talking about “ I am yours” this was & is such a precious piece to me & Bobby mentioned it in this clip how good it is,, it’s sound just transports you to a slice of heaven. Thank you folks 🌷

'Tell The Truth' - I'm glad you mentioned that song! From the start - with its quirky guitar intro - it's such a multi-layered creation of interwoven guitar work and fine vocals, which builds to a perfectly wrought crescendo in the finale. But, astonishingly, it's just one of many on that fine album. I'd love to know how 'Tell The Truth' was put together. There's also "It's Too Late" - I'd like to hear that broken down into little bits too. It features just about the most perfect bit of slide I've ever heard.

In the moment. Lightning in a bottle. In Tom Dowd's video "Tom Dowd and the language of music". He starts re-mixing Layla and he speaks about Duane's slide parts something like: "Man those notes aren't even on the guitar, they are from some other planet" or something to that effect. He knew to just keep rolling tape while the branding iron was hot. It's kinda like that squeaky doggy toy (ironic timing?) only it's Bluesy R&R...to me at least. Human is the word, well it ain't fake. That's for sure. Hell yes! An excellent introduction for anyone who doesn't know Coco is your very talented smart other 1/2. Very cool and it's so hard for her to hold her ground. Just blurt it out Coco tell it like it is!! You so don't sound like yourself at the end, except for your giggling. Priceless talk. You two are so generous to us civilian fans. Peace ~ LW

Greetings Bobby and CoCo: Your frankness and lack of ego is why I enjoy your channel. Like you, I’m not the least bit interested in “celebrity.” I zero in on great musicians who have spent their most career “flying under the radar.” I’ll name a few: Paul Carrack: Great songwriter, keyboard player, and vocalist. While Paul mainly tours in the UK, I was very pleased to see him on stage as a member of Eric Clapton’s tour in 2020. What a powerhouse. Mike Finnigan: What a voice and keyboard musician. For several years, Mike was a member of Dave Mason’s band. Back in the 80s, Mike released an album called Black & White, which contains incredible music. Jim Krueger: A songwriter, breathtaking guitarist who was a member of Dave Mason’s band. Jim released a stellar solo album several years before drinking himself to death. A horrible loss. Dave Mason: In my opinion, one of the most unappreciated musicians alive today. He can do it all - stellar songwriting, guitar playing, and vocals. Dave just re-recorded and released Alone Together, his first solo album. Amazing. BETTER than ever. It astounds me that - outside the community of musicians - many people don’t know who he is. George Harrison: While George doesn’t fit in this discussion, in my opinion, he was the most unique slide guitarist on the planet. His slide playing is like a fingerprint - immediately identifiable. George also proved that it’s possible to make great music with very few notes. It’s a matter of selecting the right notes. And that comes from within…

Bobby, Your insight just on Layla alone is so cool as you were part of what i still consider to be the best studio guitar album of all time & to hear you speak of Duane & just how in the moment he & the whole band was is very heart warming. So the small out of tune thing never made any difference on the album & as you say Duane just played it as you can't just stop when your amped up & playing with such fine players. To this day the album has never failed to put anyone who's ears get graced with it in the moment especially us that grew up with it when it was brand new. What an awesome wax treasure for sure. Your stories of the sessions are priceless. Sure miss that Colombian , you shoulda scraped it up anyway. LOL

All their Roadies were playing too. At one point this guy (Red Dog I think) starts emptying Coracidon bottles and says'anybody need aspirin'. Epilog Bottleneck:Dear Bobby and Co Co Thats awesome. When i came into Blues Music i had no idea what a bottleneck was. Then i was readin the linernotes about 》I wanna be your man the version that the Stones did and there was this note》Slide Guitar Brian Jones..So i was wonderin》mmmh🤔What is that,a slide guitar...i really thought that this was a type of guitar and not a style to play in an open tunning...🙄😁 I also had on my mind that if this guitar is slippin away all the time it must be very hard to play it😂🤣I'm not bullshitin,i was 14 and i had no idea. But yeah it is hard to play but i managed to make it work while i'm singin. But i had some expierence that was a real mystic moment.A friend of mine around that time used to know a guitar Collecter that bought a guitar that used to belong to Brian Jones. When he was in our City,he had to do some things,so he did not wanted to carry it around and left it in his car.To make it short》He left it for security at my friends house to get it back later. So on that day i was at my friends house, and he knew that i was a Stones Fan and he said》I'm gonna show you something but please be careful... So he opened up the case and there was this(Vox Guitar ?) However,i asked him to take it out of the case just to look at it and then some kind of feeling came over me that this was a guitar that i saw Brian Jones played also on a few pictures and so i put it back into the guitarcase. And i said to my friend》Man this is a wonderful Guitar and it looked like a guitar that i saw Brian Jones was playin while he was with the Stones... My friend looked at me and smiled》 You are correct. This guitar used to belong to Brian Jones and it is one of his gits from his collection.A good friend bought it in London....What a flash, but after that i found a way to play slide guitar... After that somebody gave me a metal bottle neck and i bought a record from Elmore James.Later when i came into the music of EC i found out that Elmore played in open E...and it was like a Puzzle and positive chainreaction cause you know this open G tunning and Keith Richards... Far out. To come to Derek and the Dominos. A few month back i saw a cd boot from a Dominos Show (i forgot which place)Where the Band opening up a set with Ramblin on my mind with Eric on Slideguitar.Phsntastic.It was a double cd.The sound was boot quality but in a way that it was okay.To bad i missed it. This must have been a very special show cause at the end you played also i think it was little queenie from Chuck Berry... Do you remember which show ? Hopefully there will be some releases from the Dominos that are still in the vault. I noticed that there is a new 50 anniversary edition of the Layla Album in form of a 4 Lp Set and a 2 cd Set. I think i will get the Cd Set cause i lost my LP collection long time ago and i did not wanted to rebuy them again, apart from the fact that some of the special things are hard to get. What about your Backcatalog of music ? Is there any chance for a re release ? I think Rhino Records would be great.I got a live cd from Curtis Mayfield wthere he played at the Bitter End.Phantastic. Well sometimes record companys...... Anyway.Happy Weekend🏡🌞

Remember that playing slide is almost like playing a fretless guitar. You CAN hit notes that a player using 4 fingers and a thumb cannot hit! Listen to Derek Trucks playing quarter tones and in between notes when he covers classical Indian songs such as Maki Madni. In my mind, anyone that can listen to Robert Randolph’s playing and accept it as being “in tune”, should have NO issues with Duane’s playing on the Layla album.
