Did you know, that there is actually a species of ant hibernate during the winter? It is called the winter ant, and it is native to where I live in North America. They are more active during winter when the competition is hibernating.

Break from native and exotics! Many ants have diapause right now, even exotic ones :D I only have my African, South American and Australian ants that are still awake right now a fridge doesn't get rid of their scent, it only slows them down and makes them sleepy, mature workers rarely adopt a new queen after their old one dies I want to see the nicobarensis first! While I love maculatus of course, the nicobarensis is very well known on your channel, and I really want to know how they are doing :D
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Not sure where the Maculatus from Esthetic Ants came from, so I also don't know if they need diapause. Yes, Cunicularia were a drama... Even killed the other one. I have generally noticed that formica do offten decapitate queens compared to other ants. Nicobarensis wish is heard - let's see if that is what the majority wants 😉
@Ninuturu Жыл бұрын
@@AntsVienna the maculatus came from Kenya, they don't hibernate, but might slow down in June, July and Augustus, tho beside a little less brood, they don't really stop Formica queens often snap in particles when dragged around after dead, this is also for savety so they can hide the body better, as to not endanger the colony
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the Maculatus Info! So the formica workers were actually trying to hide her remains
@alessandroagazzi5359 Жыл бұрын
for solenopsis fugax the best decision is leaving them in a test tube because of their dimension until they reach one or two hundreds of workers. giving them an foraging area to soon is not a great idea because they can stress and die because there's too much space.

What is the chance of the vertical nest collapsing and killing the queen?
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Small - The chambers can only collapse if I water it too much so it gets flooded. Besides: Ants living in the wild are are often confronted with this situation. In case the Queens chamber should collapse for any reason, the workers will be fast to rebuilt it.

Hello Ant sciescientists? I have questions for you? Q1:Ants don't have Exoskeleton? Q2:Ants have hearts? Q3:How alate Ants Can fly? ℹThere are simple questions (Easy)
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hello there, I guess you want me to answer these questions for you? :) Q1) Since ants are insects, they too have six legs and three body sections. Also, ants have an exoskeleton Q2) Ants, like other insects, have a heart that pumps hemolymph rhythmically Q3) Alate ants are born with wings. Females shed them after mating and males die after mating.

In truth, ants irk me (crawlies sensation on skin and "red fire ant" bites scared me a lot as a kid (Canada) But I think singular ants are cute and cool...... I think we have some kind of ant (carpenter?) Trying to invade the bathroom upstairs/likely breaking in via foundation or window creaks from basement. My bathroom is below the upstairs bathroom - where I see a live scout ant (nocturnal- it freezes when I turn the light on and I can gently tap him away from me as I do my business and eventually leave... But I wanna kind of harvest these ants, versus "kill" them. No idea where Queenie would be yet. Nor the species -- all I know is my basement bathroom (not used/water is off, for yrs now..) it's an ant graveyard. Living or dead/dying ant carcasses get thrown to my floors every yr - I just...dunno what to do. Where would I find Queenie haha. I presume outside I guess but I dunno. Ollllllllld house. The ant issue is "new" (2-4 yrs now)
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hello there. The Queen is probably somewhere between the house walls (if wooden) or a meter underground outside the house next to it foundation. So getting her would be almost impossible. You can make a small formicarium and place the singular ant workers (scouts) inside - that way the live a happy life without ever "reporting back" to the colony. This could potentially reduce your ant trouble for some time. Ultimately you will need to fill up every crack in your house though, if want to permanently get rid of ants and other insects coming in
