Welcome to Part 3 of our AntsVienna ANT EXPERIMENT! This is an ant video that focuses mainly on the scientific and educational side of Ant Keeping.
1 Year ago I collected 🐜🐜🐜 13 Queen Ants and placed them all in a single Ant Farm!
While Lasius Flavus are generally a gentle and easy going ant species, you won't believe what happened over the course of this experiment!

I live in Poland so i just caught my Lasius Flavus queens. i can't wait for more videos on them. in fact before i started waching your channel (abt half a year ago) i thought L. Flavus were very boring and in every single way mid. this series made me realise the truth. i absolutely love your videos. Keep it up.

@AntsVienna

Hello Katarina! Of course I can show more on the feeding :) Lasius Flavus are big honey-water lovers and ignore most other food in fact... It is rare for (my colony at least) to eat anything else. Mealworm being an exception, when they have a lot of larva to feed.

Hi from Greece. I have a question. What is the difference between a tetramorium and a Lasius queen? .In addition I want to mention that your videos are very helpful .Keep it up my friend!!
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Geia sou! Glad my videos are helpful to you. It depends on what exact Lasius and Tetramorium we are talking about. Generally speaking tetramorium are slightly smaller ants and are worse climbers than Lasius. Most Lasius species have better (farther) vision than Tetra, which means they act faster because they see you from further away. On the other side Tetra can grow very large numbers and are not afraid to take on much bigger insect than themselves - especially Tetramorium bicarinatum for example. That being said there is also the opposite side of the coin for Lasius: Lasius Flavus normally live underground and have little to no vision at all and orientate themselves in space by their sence of smell, thus contradicting the Lasius image I spoke of before. So, the short answer is: It depends on the exact species... Hibernation period may also differ for example. Hope this helps you out! Here are some ant guides on most of the ant species I keep for reference: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ_VpHeCat9jnrM&ab_channel=AntsVienna

Continue to give regular updates please i love it! Also I have another experiment I want you to try. What if you take monygynous species like tetramorium immigrans (thats what my only queen is so thats why i said that) and you put them in separate chambers with the hole small enough so the queen cant get out but big enough that workers can. then make it so they all have the same formicarium or something. maybe swap the eggs and larvae and pupae around so the workers are raised by a queen that isnt theirs to make them accept other queens (i dont know if that will work). im curious. the queens will never meet, but will the workers care?

You should definitely keep monitoring them, this is unfortunately still not enough to prove that they're polygynous, either way releasing them into the wild would probably kill them as small colonies from captivity can't really adapt to the harsh new environment :/
@AntsVienna

Yes, the "highly scientific" was of course self-sarcasm, as a single try (or two, with control colony) won`t be enough to call it scientific evidence. BUT nontheless it does prove a point about my particular local variant.

I’ve been looking forward to this video, finally it’s here! An amazing experiment with a surprising but lovely outcome (at least for most of the participants lol). I did expect most queens to die. Unluckily for me, I just ordered something from esthetic ants - without your promo code :( Well. There’s another time.

Glad you like the experiment so far. Make sure you check my videos regularly - sometimes I even get promo codes with 20% or even 30% from EA, that only apply for a limited time

release them i guess. i feel like its better to release them as you have many colonies to care for and having a polygenus species maybe high maintenance in the future.

How many ant workers are in the colony after one year?
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Hard to tell, I'd say that there are approximately 150+ workers along with at least double that in brood inside that formicarium at the moment
@AntsVienna
@AntsVienna Жыл бұрын
Funny enough the control colony with "only" 5 queens isn't that far behind. Seems that the "chemistry" between the queens as well as the workers plays a significant role on how fast the colony grows... Even more so than the actual number of queens

Hallo Claudia!
