@@polygon4399 Yeah, but it's also the only thing in Anthem everybody agrees is absolutely spot on. Like, I get not wanting superfluous work or making a job harder on yourself, but that only applies when you try to cut out the shit. Flying was the meat of the experience. If Anthem had launched without it (and without anyone Houdini'ing a whole host of new gameplay features into it instead), it'd have had an even worse reception. You don't get to not put a roof on the house because that'd be a whole bunch of extra work - houses need roofs and Anthem needed SOMETHING to put it apart from the rest of the market. Flying was that thing and I sincerely wish they had done more with it. Add some more verticality to the map, have flying enemies and levels where having flying disabled shows you just how much of a hassle traversing the world becomes if you can't just lift up and soar through the sky. The only problem I have with the flying is that they didn't go far enough.

I am waiting on Skill Up and the other disappointing content creators taking one guy, Jason Schreier's piece, at full face value, to actually apply a bit more of a skeptic observation. Just straight up swallowing the narrative that EA is not to blame.... yeah nah Huckleberry. How do they think Schreier, Kotaku critter and corporate bootlicker supreme, who shills for premium microtransactions and bashes youtube content creators for calling out corporate greed and exploitation by these companies, gets these oddly exclusive expose's? No way could it be by being a Limited Hangout hatchet man, employed to play softball and direct attention off the actual elephants in the room. Claiming EA not being to blame for Anthem's turnout when a EA mandated Battlefront 2 style monetization foundation was planned for Anthem alone, is pure and utter contradiction. Bioware being in love with Frostbite also sounds quite off and flies in the face of the reality with EA mandates on their other big games. And why would Bioware be so adamant on using it when they claimed having to fight with it anyway? That nonsense does not add up at all. Plus, most of the Bioware leadership left(I wonder why, certainly not due to EA meddling, no way.), so the only real leadership was EA tools like Patrick"These gamers or just uneducated"Soderlund, and their subsequent appointed crunchman, Mark Darrah. Its pretty clear that it is EA themselves that have the hardon for Frostbite to save on having to pay royalty money to someone else and possibly licensing it out for a profit, and it was no doubt indeed demanded to be used for anthem. Its not something Bioware would logically be concerned with sticking to if they don't have to, using a non proprietary engine and paying fees for an outside engine is something that would only truly concern EA. Purporting the contrary that Bioware simply was so in love with Frostbite that they wanted to handicap themselves with it for no reason, sets off my bullshit alarm something fierce, and just looks like yet another not so clever attempt to direct any blame off of EA. Bioware is expendable to EA afterall, they could generally give a fuck less about Jason Shiller writing a piece that blames the failure of Anthem solely on them. Even Soderlund is an afterthought for them at this point as he already got his golden parachute and is no longer with the company.

@@zipzopzoobitty He gets it because he actually tries unlike the rest of the "journalists" in the gaming space. You see, the sad thing with gaming journalists is that they do 0 investigating ever. They review a game, they complain about something. If it involves actual work and research they will avoid it like the plague. Unfortunately Jason is the only one in this space who ACTUALLY does investigations into things which, of course, results in devs being more willing to talk to him. Especially due to his built up reputation of not disclosing WHO talks about things. And thats the important thing here. He ended up building up a reputation of not revealing who says what, which makes people more willing to talk to him about it. He is in the official gaming journalist space, which gives him more credibility. Not to mention its more of a spotlight on his work. Aye, hes a shitler when it comes to youtube and he is the only journalist in Kotaku who could even be called a journalist. But his work speaks for itself and I feel like that's how it should be. Yes, and EA depended on the rest of the game structure such as story, phantasy, and themes on BioWare which they correctly assumed would know better. I mean I don’t understand how BioWare dropped the ball on those points. They churned their writers. Just imagine this happening on GoT or RDR. Writers are the basis of games. Tough way to learn the lesson. The reason the game is hollow is there’s no solid story foundation.
@originalsinquirls12055 жыл бұрын
EA was also the one who forced a niche engine down bioware's throats, so it's not like they're the good guy. PLUS, a lot of the game is wasted because the flying is such a core mechanic. Oh, so you’re into $110 games with no campaign? Cool. Wait, wait, wait, ohhh. You like Red Dead Redemption 2. Okay, cool. Yea, their P2W Online is so good. People still looove that game, right? Oh, Overwatch kid? Having fun fapping to it more than you play it? Loot boxes in a $60 game really your cup of tea, eh? Ohhh, OK, you like Sekiro? Yea, most notable thing about that game is how half of the fan base is, quite literally, disabled. Def not a game for weirdos and weebs who think that parrying isn’t something that video games have had since ‘96. Nope. Meanwhile, Anthem, this game with top of the line: graphics, physics, and sounds, and with completely free DLC, where you can fly anywhere and with dozens of more enemy types and weapon types than The Division, is TRASH. Have fun crying while EA rakes in money from: this, Battlefield, their sports games, Battlefront (still strong base), and Apex. Y’all hate Battlefield because they included women hahahahahaha. Y’all hated battlefield 1 because they had a black guy in the cover lmfao. Y’all are disgusting lol. Seriously though y’all got nothin left. Just capitulate; you lost. EA is at the top, and Anthem sold well; it was Bioware’s second best release and the best selling game of February. Every game that you guys say is better, you’re no longer playing. None of you are playing God of War, Resident Evil, or Red Dead anymore. This is the same thing that happened with BotW and Horizon Zero Dawn. These games have no multiplayer, so they can focus extra on things like graphics. Then y’all are amazed by the things that they focused extra on, like graphics. In the end, it’s the same thing you’ve played a million times; that’s demonstrable by how quickly y’all were done with those games lol. TL;DR: I see y’all who play “good games” like God of War or Resident Evil drop those games after 20-40 hours; that’s all the game had to offer. Whereas people already have 400 hours in Anthem... You can pretend like you’re winning out when you’re paying $180 per every $60 that I spend for the same amount of entertainment, but you’re not lol. That’s pretty patent. I think this reveal makes things even sadder... The devs made this game in around a year without leadership, which is insane. Those people are talented but all this talent is going to waste because of poor management and that's frustrating. Imagine what they could have accomplished were they given a clear vision to follow and work towards. I hope those that left found a job in a company that will treasure their value and that those that stayed will have better working conditions in the future, they deserve it.

Yeah, I actually think the ''Bioware Magic'' didn't die, in fact, it is alive and well, just one very important component of it is lost, and that is a functional leadership who will go through hell and high water with the devs. I mean, current Bioware leadership is still ok leader, but if you are going to pull a ''Bioware magic'' instead of normal AAA development, you need best of the best leaders.

Like Division 2? Say what you will about that game, but it at least has a better world, arguably better story (especially if you think of your character as almost Robocop), better content, and the loot is done so well. So many weapons and abilities with clear distinctions, benefits, and trade offs. Not to mention you can customize your own weapons to your liking at any time in any part of the map. It also does environments really damn well. You have parks, open areas, crowded streets, forest areas, buildings, underground, a sinkhole-like location, and don't forget the four settlements of the game world, one of which is the fucking White House for crying out loud! I don't really need to go on. However, if Division is not your thing, I understand, and suggest possibly Destiny, and older looter shooters.

Yes, but clearly the death of the studio started with its purchase by EA in 2007. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_BioWare_video_games Look at what Bioware did from 2009-2012, at least four games in the span of three years (depending on how much work they did on ToR). Then a string of cancelled games, and ME: Andromeda, and then Anthem. EA did what they always do, buy a group of productive people and completely suck the life out of them within a few short years. The confusing thing is that EA didn't close the studio after ME:Andromeda launched and Anthem still had nothing to show, that's where EA's behavior changed but it only changed in that they didn't immediately put a bullet to the studio's head even when they knew that by historical standards the studio was definitely wounded beyond repair by that point. Most likely they just wanted to avoid the backlash of closing one of the most beloved studios in gaming history, but all they did was temporarily cover up the consequences of their past misbehavior.
@RRRRRRRRR335 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, they never "rise" imo mass effect started well, then it became a convoluted mess regarding the major threat of the story (also, not a single human character is relatable or decently written). Dragon age the same thing, starts well, went to shit. Kotor and jade empire shared the same story gimmicks to shock the players, etc.. Baldurs gate, idk, never played any of them. It always felt to me that bioware was a better than most developers, but not this holly grail of western rpgs.

But turns out there were no such items nor was any content cut for DLC as they barely had enough time to make the BASE GAME. The article does state that EA took a lot of engineers off the project to go work on FIFA due to FIFA's change of engine to Frostbite. "One was that in 2016, the FIFA games had to move to Frostbite. The annual soccer franchise was EA’s most important series, bringing in a large chunk of the publisher’s revenue, and BioWare had programmers with Frostbite experience, so Electronic Arts shifted them to FIFA. 'A lot of the really talented engineers were actually working on FIFA when they should’ve been working on Anthem,' said one person who was on the project."
@deidryt99445 жыл бұрын
@Rohit Thaosen Right... the engineers who learned how to work with Frostbite with Bioware were pulled off Bioware projects to work on FIFA. So Anthem did have engineers that they fostered to work with Frostbite... and then those resources were taken away.

@Rohit Thaosen Exactly. They are Dice employees. The creators of Frostbite. Not bioware's.
@deidryt99445 жыл бұрын
@Rohit Thaosen Incorrect -- you are getting 2 different groups of developers confused. "BioWare had programmers with Frostbite experience, so Electronic Arts shifted them to FIFA." These were people that were part of Bioware projects and learned Frostbite while working on Bioware projects. Separately, there was a support team for Frostbite to help with technical issues. "When a BioWare engineer had questions or wanted to report bugs, they’d usually have to talk to EA’s central Frostbite team, a group of support staff that worked with all of the publisher’s studios. Within EA, it was common for studios to battle for resources like the Frostbite team’s time, and BioWare would usually lose those battles."

The only part of Mass Effect 3 ending that I hated was Shepard was killed. I kind of knew that this might happen when I went into the game. However, I felt that the ending, provided that you got the best ending available, was not totally unfulfilling. The good guys won and those who died didn’t put their ultimate sacrifice in vain. I think many went into the game thinking that commander Shepard would have survived and that the game would end in a “...and they all lived happily ever after.” That’s my opinion of them anyways. They didn’t lose their magic at that point, it was just a new trick by a familiar face we haven’t seen yet.

When you mentioned Corey, the first thing I think about is the documentary on GOW and how they made it. They took so long to make just the debut trailer that he had no idea how they could pull off a full release on such a tight schedule. The crunching and hard work of the Santa Monica team was able to do it ONLY due to the unflinching vision of Corey, he did what a great leader does and pulled in the resources needed to make it happen. BioWare just crunched the hell out of their staff with no clear vision, so this is what we got. May it be a story for future developers to remember

The thing is, now that I've played the game on PC, I could clearly see where they had to cut corners (such as Atreus's character arc in the middle getting condensed to the point of cringe), but I can't be mad at the game, because it's still one of the best, most visually and thematically coherent piece of fiction I've seen in the past decade. In a one-and-done ARPG with a beginning, middle and end, it's easier to see that vision, and it's unfortunate BioWare went with the live service model and assumed players would be fine with repetitive crap...rather than heavily curated encounters, a deep story, tons of dialogue, some good loot while it lasted, and a conclusive ending.

@@Maximo69 It IS a pretty damn big deal. They're two VERY different teams. Edmonton's arrogance is one of the reasons for this anthem debacle since they didn't want to listen to advice coming from the much more experienced Austin team. You can't just lump them all together. Still a good SkillUp video, regardless.

Hey @SkillUp, I want to point out a discrepancy at 9:00 You say the Bioware Austin ignored the advice of Bioware Edmonton. According to Schreier's it was actually the other way around. I don't think they can afford to give up on Anthem. They did that to Mass Effect Andromeda with that exact reason, to make Anthem better. If they do it again, no one will care about them and they might as well shut down the studio. The only way forward is for them to make an upfront massive apology and in depth explanation of how Anthem will be fixed. Take it offline, offer refunds, or whatever is needed for them to fix it. If they spend time and actually fix it to a reasonable state, as well as being as legitimately transparent on a weekly basis about what they are doing, then they have a chance. Anything less makes them an instant write off.

Destiny stayed alive amidst its constant tumult for two reasons: - Excellent gunplay - Excellent raids Anthem has no such redeeming qualities. I can always trust that even if a Destiny expansion is generally shit (*cough* Curse of Osiris *cough*), the loop will still be inherently fun and the raid will be good. In Anthem, I can't find any reason to want to play the game. No mechanic or piece of content unique or interesting enough. Destiny was ruined by its poor main story, its shallow endgame, its over-conservative approach to loot, etc. You can fix that. You can't fix the core gameplay loop, engine, and mission design. That's hard baked.
