Interesting trivia: 1. The movie is Raja Paarvai, meaning Kingly / Royal Vision 2. It's Kamalhaasan's 100th movie, released in 1981. 3. Kamal's first home production, under the banner of Haasan Brothers. 4. The first part when the singing starts you see S P Bala, the playback singer 5. The studio you see at 3:44 is Prasad Studio. They had shut down this recording studio, but Kamal approached them to shoot this portion, making this the only documented evidence showing how this studio looked like. Right after this shoot, this studio was demolished. 6. Kamal played a blind violinist. There is a line he says at some portion of the movie which is really poignant. Talking about himself and all blind people, he says, "we look at the world with everything but our eyes, but the world only looks at our eyes." Still remember that after 43 years. 7. The man who plays the leading lady's grandpa is Mr L V Prasad, a legendary director and the owner of Prasad Studios. You guys should watch the whole movie.

I think you are referring to 1985 Telugu movie Swati Muthyam in which Kamal Hasaan acted as having some kind of mental retardness. This movie was later dubbed in Tamil as "Chippikkulmuthu" ( which means - pearl inside clam shell). We watched the Tamil version in theatres as they did not dub it in Malayalam. Songs of this movie are evergreen hits. There were other simiular super hit Telugu movies those days including Sagara Sangamam which was directly dubbed in Malayalam with fresh music and lyrics (not word to word translation). Worth watching these - both original and dubbed, if you care.
