Harpegnathos have a very different dominance system, a queen doesn’t exactly mean dominant, they will wait for any change of the queen getting injured or weak to overpower her, for example in my saltator colony I have a few workers fighting for dominance, the queen doesn’t look injured but well I’m guessing her age and all, but the good news is that they do inbreed, so a new gamergate can lay male eggs and mate with those males, to then produce worker eggs, and feeding fertile larva a lot of proteins might make them female alates, anytime, the colony doesn’t need to be mature, so yeh they are really interesting, good luck with your colony :)
@AntsCzech2 жыл бұрын
Well before killig the worker, you can check if the worker is new and has gemmae (basically agland that allows her to lay eggs and mate)

In Harpegnathos species, when the queen dies, 2 or more workers gain the upper hand, so the new master of the nest takes over the nest, sometimes things go wrong and some may object to this and try to kick her out of the nest, these are quite natural things.

Yesterday I had my two Manica queens fighting, I reacted pretty much as the intro of this video upon seeing it The gaster wagging they do is adorable, they really look like puppies Kinda wondering how they fed the one larvae to the other, did they kill that other larvae or? I also kinda wonder if the workers can even penetrate the skin of another worker or queen, it didn't look like it
@AntHolleufer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah agree. I was very tempted at just leaving the queen inside and letting them fight. But the thought of contacting ant antics no. I couldn’t say to him I lost the queen. Would be to terrible. But I must say I agree. Maybe it’s not even possible for them

Now I have left with queen-less colony AND ordered colony with queens with idea to unite these colonies. Oh man, oh man... Oh dear... I guess, based on your experience, I won't do this...

I wonder if you can merge Queen ants into a colony the same way you merge Queen bees into a new colony.
@taraschumacker2 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what I thought. I know it can be pretty hit or miss with new bee queens
@AntHolleufer2 жыл бұрын
Oh don’t know much about bees. But it dose sound a bit interesting. This merge didn’t go well that’s for sure 😅
@JazzOLantern2 жыл бұрын
@@AntHolleufer I’m not too knowledgeable myself, but I recently seen they put a Queen with a few of her workers to take care of her in a small box (but able to release pheromones from it) to allow the colony to get used to the new queens scent. The hole is filled with a nutrient that they dig through slowly to then be released into the colony. It can still be a hit or miss but it get a higher chance of merge.

That was pretty much what I was expecting, trying to merge a new Harpegnathos queen with a colony with no queen almost 80% of the time the workers will try to kill the queen, I've lost two queens in this process and has bin a very costly lesson, I've only bin able to get one or two workers with my new queen with out a rebellion occurring.
