Opie had an amazing position. It’s like being a point guard when you have Shaq and Kobe on your team to pass the ball to. Opie sets them up, and they knock it down. He wasn’t going to be the funniest person in the room but he would have got his jokes in from time to time. If he handled the position with dignity and professionalism the fans wouldn’t have given him so much grief all the time.
@deathmetal8259 Жыл бұрын
Someone pointed this out in another video and it made a lot of sense. Opie would always participate with the comedians, throwing out jabs here and there. But the instant he got one back, he would go "whoa, hey, easy there." After a while, the comedians, as well as Anthony and Jim, would catch on that he could dish it, but not take it, ruining the flow and the funny. One by one, Anthony, Jim and the other comedians stopped responding to his jabs, unless it was one of the very rare brilliant lines, and Opie got jealous that he wasn't being included any more.

@@deathmetal8259That is 100% spot on. He was never going to be as funny as Jimmy or Ant. But in rare cases, he would actually be pretty entertaining in his own way. Not in the lightning quick brilliant manner that Jimmy or Ant, or the regular comedians were. But the one episode I can think of was the day they did the baby diaper mustache. And it wasn't even the bit itself. Actually the bit at the end when he shoved Rich's shit diaper on his face was the least funniest part. But that whole show from start to finish- Opie had a good energy about him. No greggshells, or pissed mist. He was just being silly and loose.
@conversationstranglersteve9873 Жыл бұрын
@@Gecko....Yeah he would sometimes get one good line in, and would just repeat it over and over, till it went from kind of funny to just gross. And his delivery was horrid. I'm still debating in my head weather Steven S from Bayshore was just that unfunny and overrated, or it just came off that way because it was Opie reading his lines. (Probably a bit of both, never found Steven S funny- Pat from Moonachie was 10x funnier.)

Jimmy was spot on with one thing: "comfortable Opie" was great, even hilarious at times. Which is why I still feel sad about all those hateful comments on YT. A comfortable Opie would always make me laugh and he DID bring something to the table! Opie WAS essential to the show when he was able to feel the flow and relax a little bit. But it's also soo hypocritical to blame Ant and Jimmy for racial jokes or having characters on the show (I mean, O&A wouldn't be the same without Chip, Ted, Paul! ). Just a couple of days ago I was listening to one of Collin's appearances in which Opie actually was proud of (in his OWN words!) molesting Stalker Patty. So proud that he wanted to play the clip again and show it to Collin. It's not that I'm like a white knight or something but after all the Harvey Weinstein and Fox News stories I would definitely say that I'm more aware of things that went too far. OPIE went too far with shit like that, and to act like he was such a sweet little boy with no interest in humiliating people is just crazy and delirious... 🙄

I'm glad someone else sees Opie in this light too. Vitriol that the fanbase has for him aside, Opie always struck me as a mainstream morning DJ who just so happened to passively stumble into shock humor when he started working with Ant, without understanding how exactly dark humor works or what makes it funny. Ant and Jim knew how to construct a well-written or timed joke around something shocking whereas Opie seemed to think that something shocking or mean-spirited automatically equaled being funny, hence doing incredibly stupid shit like fondling Stalker Patti, throwing poker chips at someone, stomping on a homeless person's food, etc. He did something fucked up _in lieu_ of telling a joke. You're also right in that when Opie wasn't so hellbent on derailing the show with calls or soundboard clips, he could very well add to the dynamic of the show. Case in point: that whole bit dedicated to shitting on Live at Club Piscopo, which remains my favorite O&A segment of all time. He let Ant, Jim, and Florentine work their magic, he was a great sarcastic straightman to Ant's rage, he threw in a few legitimately funny quips, never went to the phones, rarely went to the soundboard. Overall, he was in rare form that day. In a perfect world, if Opie could've just set his ego aside (maybe even allowed himself to be the butt of the joke like And and Jim did) he could've played the part of the straight-laced, deadpan, "radio veteran who can't believe what he's hearing" pretty well. What we got instead was a bitter, jealous, pompous, passive-aggressive twat who didn't know a good thing until he lost it.

This is every O&A comment section on Opie.. His insecurities got to him and he felt slighted because he wasn't making the jokes and didn't know his role on the show. Not everyone can be Ant or Patrice or Jimmy, and that's Ok. They needed Opie to know when to break, to keep track of time, to work the boards, etc.. But Opie wasn't happy in that role and wanted to be the "star" that Ant was, and grew resentful, attempting to undermine his coworkers whenever they got laughs. To hear the best of O&A, watch the Patrice episodes.
