Morgan’s presentation was good, I liked how she was so eloquently speaking. Anthony on the other hand actually went to connect with the judges by speaking more in front of them, giving his attention to them not only to the coffees and showing them what and how he’s doing the coffees. Maybe that’s why he won? But overall, both performed so well. I’m curious though which coffees tastes better.

And it also has a lot to do with the coffee they served which the audience can't taste. So must trust the judge on that matter. They're the expert 😄

That makes sense. This is my first time watching something like this and I think the reason I liked Morgan’s speech more than the two others in the top 3 is because she created a narrative about coffee as a whole and the region she was pulling her courses from with just light mentions of the process which held my attention as someone who doesn’t really drink or think about coffee often. That said, I recognize why this presentation would win over here. Notes on process/reasoning behind preparation decisions is probably a part of the scoring so I think the places where Morgan fell behind the most are probably less in her speeches and more in the actual speed, presentation and engagement. Anthony is speaking directly to the judges for the majority of his presentation and he prepares more of the drink in front of them. He also interacted with all of this equipment with a level of fluency that made moving between courses noticeably more fluid. She of course still did an amazing job and placing second is nothing to sneeze at but I do see a few ways this could have been judged that would all lead to a similar outcome in Anthony’s favor despite liking her actual speech more

To join in all the comments comparing Anthony to Morgan in this competition, in my opinion the biggest difference between the two is structure. Morgan's was structured like a video, with a perfectly edited script, non-stop information, and even accompanying visuals. It absolutely worked and made for an engaging watch, but I like this one more for how the judges would have actually witnessed it during the competition, rather than the audience after the fact. It is all very personal, with emphasis on his particular choices and attention paid to the judges. I also like the pauses and empty space, it makes me feel like he is focused on his work and is supremely comfortable with what he is doing, as well as it giving the judges time to process information.

Anthony's theme of trust made a great interpersonal connection with the judges and his explanation of the processes he used to develop the flavors he chose really speak to his level of craft that, really, anyone can comprehend. Most people focus on the presentation. While, yes, presentation has a significant role on the final score, the taste of the coffee also has big roles which the audience can't tell. So we must trust the judge on that matter. I like Morgan too, but seeing people judging as if they're the expert on the comment section really irritates me. It's good enough for Morgan to get second place. I mean, even the previous world champion can lose on the next year competition.

Anthony's presentation worked with his theme of trust. He set the expectation of what flavors he was to serve the judges and worked to deliver on what was essentially a promise. By delivering on his flavors, it made his presentation that much more impactful. Also, he spoke to them as if they were customers at his coffee shop.

I know literally nothing about coffee or the art of coffee making, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, BUT the reason why I think Anthony won (although there are probably a few I'm not aware of) is that being a barista is about more than just the coffee - it's about charisma and the connection you make with others. After all, it is a very social job. Yes, Morgan's presentation was beautifully eloquent and the angle she chose to approach it from was interesting, but her presentation style might make her feel 'distant' as opposed to Anthony's more interactive approach. To add to that, it's possible that she just spoke too much. There was a moment where Anthony didn't say a word for exactly 1min 15secs, and this was most likely to let the judges really focus on what they were drinking so that they could taste the flavors he was describing.

Now that I heard his "presentation" he wasn't too focused about global mass extinction because Morgan mentioned that word a total of 8 times which started to sound too clinged to one topic, yes she needed a red line throu out, but it sounded too pressured. He in the other hand was way more "perfect" he didn't make any practical mistakes like morgan did and also discribed how he was preparing the coffee in the shiver. In the end he was maybe just ahead in experience but both did a good job anyways

I read in another comment that Anthony has been competing for years. I'm sure that plays into his comfortability up there. But he also talked to the judges directly. Brought some of his work directly to them and showed them what he was doing. Got them involved and interacting with their drinks -- the discs, swirling, and stirring. He made both a verbal and physical connection to the judges. Morgan's speech was moving. She was articulate and her script was emotional. But she did have a couple of slips during her routine -- at one point she struggled with the machine, and one of her cups leaked down the side. Idk if that cost her points, but quite possibly could have. She spoke like she was doing a tedtalk. Like she was on a stage with an audience. So as a viewer, i actually preferred Morgan's routine. But I can understand how a judge would prefer Anthony. Either way, they're both great. This is going to open so many doors of opportunity for both of them.

Loved this. They each did what made sense for themselves. You could not pull off this theme of trust if you didn't seem totally relaxed and warm. You can't talk about the urgency of climate change with a relaxed and warm teacher vibe. Well, you can, but it may be less effective in a timed storytelling situation. Personally, even though I understood that breaking the glass was meant to feel uncomfortable and it allowed for a great metaphor and the beautiful gold-veined mended cups to be used, I still felt it was a bit contrived so in terms of presentation style, it's all a matter of the taste of the judges. However, I suspect that the flavour of the coffees can be a bit more objectively judged (even though taste plays a part, at that level of taste, one can usually see past your preferences and still enjoy).

A lot of comments and coming back to this, to all: successful hospitality businesses have a key thing: consistency. Successful routines, recipes etc are all consistent. While Ben Put introduced the world to eisbock milk, this cryo-dessicated milk allows for a level of consistency not seen before. And that's probably another point in his favour. For the other baristas there would have been an additional element of randomness to their milk-drinks and thus to preparation and tasting that Anthony's... didn't. But what a weird world we're in that basically powdered milk is now the... creme de la creme.

Congrats to both of thrmbut I'd vote for this guy over Morgan because it's way less cringe. Morgan's presentation was like a philosophical treatise.. Anthony's explains the process and what he's making.

that was always Morgan's shortcoming. it ends up being irrelevant to the coffee and comes across pretentious.

He cryo-desecrated the syrup. Many ways to desecrate syrup but that one was a winner.

Why did that standard digital kitchen timer stand out to you?
@msupra1894
@msupra1894 2 жыл бұрын
@@error.418 because it doesn't look standard. I'm currently looking for a high quality timer with extra features and multiple alarms in a small form. Not only for coffee but in general. Have a couple of CDN timers but they've been lame. I did see a Casio timer on Google images which tickled my JPN bias.
@error.418
@error.418 2 жыл бұрын
@@msupra1894 Ah, it looks like a standard 3-button timer to me, but I can definitely understand what you're looking for. How many concurrent timers are you hoping to use? Or are you just looking for one with memory for multiple timers to call up?
@msupra1894
@msupra1894 2 жыл бұрын
@@error.418 I'd still like to know what brand it is..only because I couldn't find it with google images haha. As for features, I'm not after anything specific other than wanting to find out if any company makes high quality models. I'm assuming there must be something out there even if it's in different industries.

@@msupra1894 Yeah, I can't seem to quickly spot the exact model, but would need to dig deeper. As for quality models out there, stuff like the ThermoPro TM01 or TM02 maybe? The OXO Good Grips Digital Triple Kitchen Timer is also... interesting. The ThermoWorks TimeStick is popular among chefs.
