The problem with BTS is that their sugary sweet pop songs are the only ones that make US charts. So that's what people think they are. Their catalogue is huge and diverse.

not a problem with bts but with the general american public. bts never claimed to make only english fun pop songs. one of their most known songs on the korean music market is a ballad honoring the memory of the victims of the sewol ferry tragedy.

@apryl21 the comment above yours explains "widely promoted" isn't really the case - it's just that the american industry have sidelined and downplayed the success of bts korean singles and only (mildly) accepted the english ones. (which still get next to zero radio and platform support compared to western artists) and actually getting no. 1 on bb100 wasn't the goal bts had in mind when they made dynamite, they were even hesitant, if you can believe that. all they wanted to do was try something new that will be a way of escapism from the pandemic that everyone could find joy in. and apparently people loved it.

He does know BTS. He rated 3 or 4 of their albums I think. Evaluted Suga's album and Ho-Seok album too. It's his first review of a RM album. He didn't really liked BTS's and Agust-D album. LOVED Ho-Seok album. As for me I got curious about BTS and specifly the rapline After I Heard Jack In The Box by J-Hope. this album is INSANE and like I said had a excellent review from Fantano, Arson is even in his playlist (every year he does a playlist of his favorite song of the year). RM also stand out, his flow and voice are so good, his texts are top notch, like Ho-Seok he doesn't hesitate to take risk and go out from his conort zone, he is creative and his work is artsitic too. Not like music they do for BTS, in BTS they write for their audience in their solo work they write for themself. I don't like BTS music much but Ho-Seok and RM's solos 🔥🔥🔥 But for now as for Suga, for me he is behind Ho-Seok and RM. Fantano did review his album and called it, I quote ''plastic''. I have to say I'm pretty agree with that, he has some good tracks but his albums but I found it pretty boring to listen to them in a row. I have listen to 3 of them and translate the lyrics and it took me 1 year. Still I had never put so much effort on listening an artist that the music didn't catch me much. And I have to confess I did it for Ho-Seok Because they both are in BTS and Really Ho-Seok was the Artist I discovered last years I didn't knew I was waiting for this man is so so so impressive ! So I put extra effort on his banf mate for him ... I was a bit disapointed by Suga considering the level or Ho-Seok and RM. I Hope he will get inspired by them and he will catch them for his next album. That said I'm Happy I could discover Snooze. It's a excellent track..

@@Zarlor97422 most of agust D/Suga's work is largely autobiographical in nature so it's not as accessible to a hip hop ear. It's heavily stylized and if it helps is a means to an end. With Suga the Music and production are only a small part of a larger universe that spans across three of his albums, MV and lore (like an MCU) it's littered with repetitive motifs, lyrics and say things like using autotune across his work to represent the voices in his head, his two selves etc. That said you don't HAVE to know all this to like or dislike the music (and even after that it may still not be your taste) but even the 'plastic' over produced sound... I understand how it would put people off ( but like I said there's a reason). With RM and Hoseok, most of their albums are strongly conceptual... Jitb and Neuron blow my mind as does Indigo and RPWP and even in the flows and experimentation, there's a structure and a melody that we're used to... Each member's work serves a different purpose. Suga - a kpop producer himself experiments while staying in a kpop adjacent sound, Hoseok reminds me of old school hip hop (80s 90s), RM is strong with experimental rap these days (have you heard Sexy Nukim?) RPWP is a creative project directed San Yawn from the experimental rap collective Balming Tiger. BTS rapline aren't afraid to push limits with genre bending and cause discomfort and as fans we can't wait to see how they evolve.

@@Rxpinn Thanks for the precisions but I allready know all of that. Suga is a rapper, rappers are story teller and there songs are based on their live, their thought, their expériences, that is just normal. All rappers, all Hip Hop listeners know that. That interesting that you talk about Suga/Agust-D personas because it's one of the things I didn't understand Witt his artsitic choices, hé didn't used it, Ho-Seok did, Jack In The Box is about the duality between Ho-Seok and J-Hope and it's a asset to have persona in rap, not all rappers have Persona, the list is very short, and that open artistic opportunity and it's even on the criterias to evaluate a tier rapper. So it's not a détail. Still unlike what you are telling me and unlike what I've Heard from his work Agust-D didn't use Suga, didn't play with his persona that would have been interesting. And he confirmed it himself during his album promotion in his show with RM, he said hé regretted hé didn't used Suga. When I Heard that I was like, you Can ! Having a persona, even personas with Yoon-Gi and not using it in rap game it's such a waste. Not all the Time if course, Eminem don't use Slim shaddy for all his work, but at least give us something crunchy ! A good duality ! RM it's a bit différents, he doesn't used persona but he show a widest range, multiples faces of one piece. So interesting. When I say I found Suga's album boring it's because he use pretty much Always the same colors, liké hé was stuck on his confort zone, I found. Him better during featuring. Because his features brings something refreshing for the ears. As for the autotune things, yeah, I think he has to stop that ! I mean autotune is Ok, is an artistic choice, for artistic effect but it is to dose ! My perception is that Suga over use auto-tune to cover his undevelopped voice, his lacks of colors. Compare to Ho-Seok for sure, he has less colors but even compare to RM, who also have an undevelopped singing voice but that doesn't stop him to be versatile in his flow, Suga too but Yep he uses less range than RM. And still he shows a great potential, he is a good story teller, a good lyricist, his production are good, I like his attitude but for me he works too much with his head, it's too calculated, too homogeneous, too average, I mean maybe if I discovered rap with him I would like it more but for me he doesn't Really stand out. Not saying his work is Bad, no, I like some of his songs, Snooze is my favorite, he shows that hé has a very beautiful âne interesting voice even if his singing voice is not developped, I prefer BTS's rappers singing voice over vocalist anyway, except maybe Jin who has a beautiful vibrato but he lacks a bit of techniques. So I'm not expecting Suga to sing high notes by at least to broke his bareers. It's the feeling I have with Agust-D, I don't Know if I'm gonna be able to make you understand it but for me he is still Suga, the BTS rapper even on his solo work, when Ho-Seok and RM give me more ''break it all'' Vibe, more authentic music, more artistic, more aesthetic Of course 3 of them are authentic in their Lyrics but for me there's something missing of Agust-D work. Like if even solo he is still compromising and Writing for armys. I have listen to BTS's songs, not my cup of tea, but I Can see and hear the differences between BTS J-Hope and J-Hope as solo, same for RM but Suga is pretty much the same. Not a reproach After all the most important are -1 He loves his work -2 He has fans who love his work. My opinion won't change that but I think he could do better, be a bit more crazy, take more risks and give us Real Agust-D vibes and not Agust-D Aka Suga BTS'' s rapper Vibe. But wathever he will do I' ll respect him of course.

@@Zarlor97422 hey I respect that :) we each have our own faves. I know what you mean about playing with personas as hoseok did or as Em does. With Yoongi, if you know Suga is for BTS work (has a different style and flow), prod. SUGA is his commercial stuff and Agust d started as an alter ego for raw stuff so arguably all the solo work that has agust d in them. So the interplay in personas is across all the work. There's no interplay or conflict btn the personas (like Em does a lot) in the actual songs/album except maybe in the Interlude: Shadow. And the MVs that tie it together. I think he sort of did it through the vcrs in the tour (ps I loved the live band arrangements and I saw it live) I don't think he views the personas exactly as other selves or sides (like Jay and J-hope so stylistically different even visually... With agust d it is basically an outlet that had a name I guess... Interesting for me to think about. I also understand what you mean in terms of a purist sound that Hoseok and RM have in my mind it's rock versus experimental prog rock with a bit of NF 😅 (when I heard the Last and Amygdala it reminded me of Therapy session 😅) ik a lot of hip hop heads won't agree with his stylistic choices and that's fine... I could write a whole essay on the auto tune alone. You are right about the fact that he writes centering his personal journey or army... So it's more about Catharsis or relatability (even though not so intentional). I am not trying to convince you and I get what you're saying ... I'm Army (love the rapline) but have grown up around hip hop. I just loved the chat. Thank you for putting across your points so coherently and respectfully. We all have different preferences. He used to be an underground rapper before BTS, so this is him as a solo artist going back to his roots kinda. And yes, he's a Lyrical genius, composer, producer...he takes part in complete musical preparation. He has himself written almost all of BTS's discography, even other members' solo songs too. @@tonzyjc To be honest I've disagreed with most of Anthony's takes that I've heard (not just about BTS) so I don't tend to pay attention to him. But I can't forget when he reviewed an entire BTS album without reading the lyrics and said he "doesn't really care about lyrics anyway." I don't understand the point of critics at all if I'm honest... wouldn't you just engage with all kinds of art, see how it makes you feel, and stick with what moves you? Why do you need someone to tell you what to think? But clearly there's an audience for that. I suppose the potential positive of him reviewing it is simply exposing the album to a wider range of people... having said that, the question is will his audience be able to make up their own minds about what they're hearing, or will they be swayed by their favourite critic and his positive/negative opinion? I don't know his audience well enough to know how seriously they take him. I'm also conflicted about which medium I want BTS' music to be exposed to people via. Watching the reactions to them over the years, the level of prejudice and deep cynicism which seems to cloud a lot of people's view is quite depressing. Seeing people strain themselves in their determination to dislike it from the get-go, faces going stiff the moment they hear a non-english lyric, a sneer setting in even as the first note sounds, the disdain they feel for any moment of softness or sweetness or unguarded earnestness... I don't really want those people anywhere near BTS. Even if an album like RPWP might appeal to that audience because of its 'coolness' and 'edginess'... I don't feel like they really deserve it, if that makes sense. If you've been actively denigrating RM and BTS for the past 10 years (not just ignoring them), and then the moment they make music coded as 'artistic' in a way your ego can accept, suddenly you love it... then you are one of those thoughtless bastards he's talking about in Groin!!! I can already see them building narratives about how they 'discovered' RM (as if ARMY haven't been shouting from the rooftops for a decade) and how they want to 'rescue' him from his entire image and career thus far. Missing the message in his music entirely. Speaking as someone who is generally into 'serious' and 'artsy' and 'experimental' music who's also a big fan of BTS, I feel like the best way to approach them is to come in with genuine curiosity, good intentions, and a sense of fun. Explore a little (don't stick with the singles), then if you're feeling the vibe you'll be moved to organically take your own journey down the rabbit hole. If you don't feel it, then it's not for you and that's fine. In my experience it's the kind of music that grows and grows, it curls its tendrils into you and pulls the cynicism out unexpectedly. It benefits from a highly invested audience who care enough to pick up on all the internal references and the depth of authenticity in the delivery. I don't think it benefits from being packaged up and put on the firing range for a skeptical, ranking-obsessed audience to have a 'smash or pass' response, while nervously glancing at their fellow 'critical' bros to decide whether it's acceptable to like it or not. That whole shallow attitude is sort of fundamentally incompatible with the point BTS is making with their art.

But you have to be willing to enjoy a wide range of music styles, cause they're not afraid to try new things. Also, seeing their artistic evolution as a fan is delightful. They keep growing and growing, they are ambitious and they take their craft seriously. From music to lyricism, performance and concept. Each one has a thing going on for them. Because I can assure you they have allready fought with Fantano's community and a bunch of Armys have categorized Fantano and his community as BTS haters with the arguments you gave, because they couldn't support critics. Like same in AOTY which if you don't Know it's a site with music lovers who review and rate albums. They have their biased of course, they are not professionals but there are interesting and relevant reviews. And if you want to have a window on what GP really think about a song /album it's a pretty good place. Because for me at least, the popularity of a song doesn't mean everyone loved the song. The all World is not crazy about Baby Shark. There are a lot of possibilies. As just for me for example I have allready stream songs I don't like, Sometimes I Really don't like at ALL ! By curiosity to understand a hype, because of the algorithm and I'm busy my device is not next to me so I wait for the next song ( At some point I had to block some artits Spotify was pushing too much for this reason, because once a Time ok I give you your stream but I have my limits) because if my children, because I love dance and a choreo is cool, if I Really can't stand the song I mute and play something else. And there are people who consume easy music, like those who go to KFC, it's catchy, fun, light, your brain is off, it's basicly supermaket music but it doesn't mean they think it's the song of the year. So this website offer a better picture of how music lovers have receive a songs an album. That is the point of view that interest me the most. And unfortunatly, it became almost impossible to have an objective view on BTS members Album there because ARMYs have start a war with them too. This is why I made this comment, you are thankfull to his community but when music lovers are involved, we absolutely don't Care about nationality, ce Care only about music, thé problem is never music lovers, the problem is Always armys. I just come back from a video where a music lover did a review oh Hope On The Street feat J-Cole and hé was so disapointed because he said J-Hope verses was not interesting he got back lash hé was like if I can't bé honest on my feelings and opinion I will just stop reviewing J-Hope because I'm hère for music and not to fight with J-Hope fans. Have fun with it! Aside from writing a majority of BTS' songs and producing some, he has 4 albums out. Right Place Wrong Person is the latest one. Most similar to that would be his first mixtape RM (2015). His other two albums Indigo and Mono have quite a different vibe, slower and more thoughtful, but also very good. He started out as an underground rapper when he was literally 13 years old (he was like a schoolboy prodigy on the scene) so he's been working for a long time! Some extra collab singles to check out: Change with Wale BukuBuku with MFBTY Gajah with Gaeko Timeless with Tiger JK Sexy Nukim with Balming Tiger Smoke Sprite with Soyoon Don't Ever Say Love Me with Colde

I'm listening to RM's new album Right Place, Wrong Person, and I'm just amazed by how much he poured into this album. The music is definitely not K-pop in the traditional sense, and it won't be for everyone, but I think that makes it even more special. Trying to pinpoint a genre in this is very difficult; it's really got a bit of everything. I'm going to go through some of my highlights upon first listen... The album flows between songs incredibly smooth. I kept having to look at my phone to see when a song had changed. Nuts: He really just wrote a horny song with great lyrics...and looove the fact that the lyrics refer to both a woman and a man in parallel stanzas. out of love: He tries to take back the power from the media and fans who expect moral perfection from idols: "Smoking kills, I know / It's my fuckin business you bitches stop don't talk shit." I understand people who disapprove of smoking, but regardless, he's really pushing back against the perfect idol image. Domodachi: Just an incredible song with a great beat, rap flow, and feature. Little Simz absolutely killed it. Groin: This line "Not a fuckin' diplomat" just hits hard knowing how they are serving their government in the military after facing so much national pressure to be Korea's representatives. And I love how Around the world in a day and Come back to me just take their time to sink into the music, the emotions, the instrumentals. There was no attempt to make a commercially palatable 2:45 song. This whole project shows how the solo albums have allowed the BTS members to find their style and rediscover their passion for music, and I love to see it.

Ive been an army of yrs and even we were surprised by how alternative RM decided to go. He was very honest and candid in his lyrics. More than ever. Its not a sound i would have sought out myself. The more music you listen to the better youll be at hearing music. It may not be my cup of tea fully but i can feel that this album wasnt made for clubs and chart topping or even radio spins. The album is meant to be played top to bottom. Trust me the transitions are so well done, if you arent looking then you wont know when the songs change. Its meant to be a body of work where the listener is gonna feel disonant, awkward, uncomfortable, and feel essentially out of place, hence the title right place wrong person. The instrumentals and production did excellent in bringing that concept out. RM said that right place wrong person was able to interchange to wrong place right person, that the project was meant to take you on a roller coaster sonically. You are meant to question why something was placed there in the track and if it truly belonged? Is it right or wrong? And that will change from person to person to. Its an album that makes you think. And for that, not just bc im army but bc im a music listener, i think the project matched the concept very well. Thank you for reading up to here 🙏 and i hope yall can go listen to the album top to bottom. Its only around 34 minutes all together. And make your own judgments. Theres plenty of lyric translations out now and some of the lyrics are english as well.

Well said. Sonically this album isn’t something I usually gravitate towards. At my first listen I was so confused. It was playing tricks with my brain. I thought the song would go a certain way and then it tried to break my ankles. And YAS! I caught myself checking the track countless times to see if the song changed. The transition from song to song was so smooth, and yet the switches within songs were so drastic. I must say tho…after a few listens (top to bottom), and watching the video of RM sharing this album with Jimin and explaining the meaning behind it…really shows the struggles of Kim Namjoon (RM), shows the musical genius of this young man, and also breaks my heart about what goes on in his head and in his heart. As he says in groin, he’s just a regular 29 year old put on a pedestal, asked to make political statements and such. Hoping more of the general public will give these young men a chance and see them for the artists they are and not peg them as a kpoppy boyband that sing about their highschool crushes 💜

So many would be surprised how much they'd actually like them. I went from listening to to Slipknot to BTS and I will never regret that. If you love music you will love what these guys do THEY ARE BIGGER THAN KPOP but that's the label outsiders will keep giving them. @@irvingbaez6984 The kpop label is complicated in the way it specifically refers to the idol system (kpop ≠ all popular music in Korea). I was going to write a whole essay here but it's not worth it. I think the definition is shifting over time anyway, as boundaries are broken, norms are shifting, and there is more cross-pollination of fans between 'idol' and 'non-idol' musicians. RM is right at the heart of these shifts as the leader of BTS. He started as an underground rapper, then signed with a label and came up through the kpop system as part of BTS. However BTS went against quite a few idol norms since their inception, and have been taking steps to further deconstruct the concept over time. They've written a lot about conflicted feelings on their status as 'kpop idols' over the years... I'd say their conclusion is that ultimately they don't care how people define them, they're just going to concentrate on making music. But it's still frustrating as a fan when that label gets used against them in a limiting way.
@shockofthenew
@shockofthenew 3 ай бұрын
@@jessicapierce3027 Well in this case I was talking about Rolling Stone calling RPWP a 'pop' album, which just doesn't make sense genre-wise no matter how you look at it. I feel they wouldn't do that if RM was from the US and released this album. It goes further than just press coverage too, for example when the BTS rappers release straightforward hip hop albums they're still given the 'kpop' label on spotify and excluded from 'hip hop' listings. Or the fact that American award shows have now created 'kpop' categories so they can ring-fence artists from a particular background no matter their genre and keep them out of the main categories (same with 'latin' and 'urban' categories).

@ashurasama
@ashurasama 2 ай бұрын
If you think that Dynamite is typical kpop, it means you don't actually listen to kpop :) Kpop isn't really a genre, it's an industry that encompasses all kinds of music. The only thing that gets pushed in the US is mainstream pop in mostly-English because that's what their American partners think will work the best. Dynamite is an actual outlier in BTS's discography, considering the members did not contribute to the song at all. One thing to remember is that BTS was built around its rappers, because the first vision for them was a hip hop group ; the rappers have always heavily contributed to their songs, especially when it comes to lyrics (RM was, from day one, the group's primary lyricist). Their first two years (2013-2014) they still had that heavy hip hop influence, both in sound and image. Their sound has gradually changed to include more varied things, but it didn't shed the hip hop influence completely, it was just not as present in the music they promoted ; if you took the time to listen to their albums though, there were still songs that leaned into it. Also, everyone in the group already had solo songs out by the time the group hiatus started, both on their albums and as side projects they didn't promote (the rappers had full on projects out already : RM's "RM" and "mono.", SUGA's "Agust D" and "D-2", J-Hope's "Hope World", and the vocalists had a few songs on their Soundcloud as well). The second disc of their anthology album "Proof" has solo and subunit songs that each member selected to represent themselves and their individual music identity, and I think it gave a pretty good idea of the direction they wanted to go (except J-Hope because he had like, no song out yet that could hint at how dark Jack In The Box was going to be).

@@MidnightEkaki the quality of their music has always been there and it's enjoyable to this day, but i too wish they'll break out of the pop formula. i'm wary of saying this because i can't imagine just how much pressure BTS must feel, but because i love them so much i wanna see them reach their full potential. and for that to happen i think time is crucial. RM took a year to make RPWP but BTS as a group used to drop an average of two albums every year + hectic schedule of touring, content creation, photoshoots and a bunch of other stuff. they also had to get their music approved by the label and producers, even work with people which in my opinion they didn't want to but /had to/. so to me, they're above the necessity of all of that. they're not your average kpop group that need to constantly drop music to stay relevant. i wish they'll just chill after their military enlistment and really have time to make an incredible body of work.

This album would be the strongest contender for aoty at the Grammys if only he were American 🥴 i lowkey still have faith though that the Academy will nominate it at least in a rap category but for that to happen people need to hype this album, i hope Fantano reviews it and more people can get into it

I liked his last album, _Indigo,_ but _RPWP_ just fires on all cylinders for me. In some ways, _Indigo_ felt like he was introducing himself into these new styles of music, while _RPWP_ feels like he was right at home with this direction. As a fan, I both want BTS and their solo music to make another comeback. It'll be interesting to see how their solo ventures shape their grp music and how they grow individually with their solo stuff.

Yeah, whoosh that intention of the song went way over his head haha. In what world did someone think it was meant to be club music? At least he later admitted he needed to relisten to the song after hearing the other tracks.

Maybe it's because I used to go out to a bunch of underground house parties/burning man parties in San Francisco but to me Domodachi felt like something I could totally hear out dancing...but I guess those are specific situations.

Love to see locals being surprised of BTS and BTS' members artistry lol. The problem is that Radio just sometimes play the pop songs (and they are not bad) but still that makes everyone think that's all they can do lmao They go crazy and their lyrics are always fire Y'all should definitely check them out. As soloist they are really different and BTS' discography is huge and diverse There're 7 members: 4 Vocalists (Jungkook, V, Jimin and Jin) and 3 Rappers (RM, J-Hope and Suga/Agust D)

I really hope more people take the time to listen to the BTS members music past their title tracks. People love them for a reason! They do a lot of different genres and experiment with sounds more than people think. Their solo releases this/last year have been incredible and made me appreciate them even more as artists. Love my Bangtan boys!! 💜

This is everything and so much more I expected from RM. I’ve been listening to Kpop for 8 years now, stopped listening to BTS for roughly like 2-3 years now. I don’t seek out their music to be honest, if I come across it I’ll listen to it and half of the time it’s really good. It’s so nice to see them be able to let loose, not be so constricted by the world of Kpop. RM as always had that dawg in him 😂 I’m glad people who aren’t even Kpop fans are recognising it.

truthfully so, people (including so called ARMY and those who call themselves "Namjoon fans"), don't want to give Namjoon his well deserved flowers and credit because they fear that this will undermine their fav/bias 🙄 till this day, Namjoon's achievements gets pushed onto others, and his hardwork swept under the rug all because fans have this fear of his surpassing their fav, yet they still use his KOMCA and lyrics in fanwars 🤷‍♀ welp, now you can see RM is known for his unmatched lyricism, love of art and nature, and how that talent and skill reflects in his music. Chapter 2 has shown us a lot, I am glad Namjoon went out of his way to represent himself, now the fakes that tried to steal/undermine his achievements aren't able to do that anymore.

Along with the cosmic giftedness of RM, Balming Tiger is instrumental to the sound, and vibe of this album. I think I'm about to lose BT as my favorite little indie group lol Korea has been slaying and the west is largely sleeping. Check out SoYoon, Glen Check, Cifika, Milena, anything older you can find with Sukhoon Chang (Byung Un), Colde, Hoody, Christ theres so many. And Now I have so many BTS group and solo song recommendations for you. Their catalogue is beyond belief. I'm almost jealous of the people just now discovering this universe.

namjoon and every member of bts is more talented then a lot of people think. bts is not a traditional boy band at all. they are musicians at heart and if you’ve only heard one or two of their peppy english songs (which they only released to cheer up people’s moods during covid)… you don’t know them at all.

from what i've listened from bts, their solo stuff is way better than their group stuff. just listened to the full album and it's amazing. i hope RM continues with this route of more creative music; would love to see more korean instrumentals infused with R&B. i would prefer him just going full korean language instead of using english but maybe it's to widen his market? also, i can't tell if people are joking in the comments about him "stealing" from tyler the creator? i can see N.E.R.D. inspiration but that's never been "stealing" lmfao.
