Quick note: the colts didn’t design the offense for chunk plays instead of dink and dunk passes because Richardson can’t do it. They designed a deep ball offense because that is what Shane Steichen likes to run. His vision is to simplify the defense by creating one on one’s deep down the field. He did this with Rivers, Herbert, and Hurts.

The problem obviously is that the personnel that Steichen excels with is not with the Colts offense. They don't have ISO ball winners who can win on go routes. Sure people will say Pittman may be playing injured but if he's that good he would have hauled down some key passes in that last game vs the Texans. The run game is okay but not crazy efficient. Even if you take into account Richardson's ability in scramble situations to get 5+ yards himself. Plus at ARs point of his career and with his lack of reps, he is very much unpolished with flashes of situations that few QBs are capable of doing at the pro level.

Almost? The ones that do prove they work out can take the game reps and suck. And that is important because that is what Richardson is lacking. At the same time there others in the org to share the blame. The run game isn't efficient or dominant enough to get chunk plays with it against teams. The Commanders have that as a feature with Jayden's legs along with 2-3 other RBs. Steichen's style is usually that of using the run game and pushing the ball deep. Maybe he should lean less with AR's arm and work the short/intermediate game. Also the receivers have been trashola with drops and the inability to haul down passes in key situations. Pittman Jr is exhibit A in the last Texans game.

Appreciate your videos, thank you Alex for everything that you do. In my layman's opinion, the Colts roster is set up to be running the air out of the ball. The run blocking o-line, the big WR's (Pittman, Pierce), an All-Pro RB in Jonathan Taylor, etc. An athletic running QB with a big arm like Richardson makes hypothetical sense in this context, with design QB runs and RPO to complement the rest of the run game and set up the play-action for shots downfield. For instance, Richardson is leading the NFL in Air Yards Per Pass Attempt, so he basically throws it deep or doesn't throw at all. I feel that his low accuracy is somewhat to be expected as a result, although not quite to this level. It looks to me like Pittsburgh had some similar ideas starting Justin Fields at the beginning of the season. Trouble for Indy is that their defense/special teams is not the Steelers D/ST, so they fall behind and have to abandon the running game/pass it. That's when Richardson gets exposed. And even the Steelers turned to Russell Wilson because of his ability on those downfield passes despite Fields' clear edge in athleticism/mobility. Combine that with Richardson's seeming injury-proneness to dissuade the design QB runs and it's definitely doesn't look good at the moment. Hopefully he can learn from this and improve, as he is a fun player to watch.

yeah, man. there were a lot of people out there who predicted Mahomes was going to be a bust based on his college plays. Chiefs gambled on taking and developing him and it paid off. When I watch Stafford throwing a no look pass (he threw one in the game against the Vikings to Robinson) and having complete command of the offense, making NO excuses, taking ownership of his mistakes and still getting it done, I see that the line between 'great' and 'average' is getting bigger and bigger. Brady did a long interview with Stephan A Smith where he detailed just how hard it is to play QB at a high level and he said he doesn't see ANY of that happening now. The QB play is more like low IQ rat ball rather than 'GSOT' precision and timing. Playing QB is hard but it's really impossible to do it consistently is you can't stay calm and focused, which is also a sign that you're not ready to start.

I’ve seen a lot of Florida fans in comment sections talking about how shocked they were that he was drafted as high as he was. They didn’t see him as an NFL QB. I think he’s a good athlete who plays the QB position but who doesn’t have the ability to think like a QB. Also, I’ve seen so many Colts fans talking about their receivers dropping passes. It doesn’t make logical sense for Richardson’s low completion percentage to be on the receivers. It’s just too low for that. Like Alex said, AR’s inaccuracy is hindering his receivers from catching the ball.

It makes logical sense if you watch the last game film with the Texans instead of doing what box score viewers do and repeat the completion % like its science. Granted even if certain receivers like Pittman were hauling the passes they SHOULD catch, AR's completion percentage would still be under 50%. However the direction of the game would have changed drastically with those catches made and even if AR was to tap himself out in that situation, he wouldn't face the consequence he did. Considering he played an even worse game on film against the Packers and Dolphins (both games used as examples by Rollins) and Steichen still let him play.

1.His limitations were well documented coming out of college. 2.Most experts called him a “project.” Coaching staffs are often at odds with the front office/ownership when it comes to drafting/playing certain guys. 3. This is why I don't get people saying he 'sucks'. He comes to the league young, inexperienced and seeking reps. So obviously he's going to show a flawed tape with his reps he gets. Missing time on field due to injury also doesn't help. He's also had worse games before the Texans tap out one with the Packers and Fins even on film. The tap out is not a huge deal and does not do well for Richardson to endear himself less with a locker room let alone the coach. But the team seems at odds with the direction of trying to 'win' to also working with project QB.

Basically, Richardson in Mitch Trubisky or Akili Smith. Guys who had basically one good year in college who were then way over-drafted and, given a chance, quickly showed they were not going to be NFL level starters, ever. He is bad with footwork, pre-snap, post-snap, situationally and in-game awareness. That is a mountain of problems to overcome with "more reps". It's ridiculous to think you can solve all his issues by giving him reps. It won't happen.

Every time a team whiffs on an early qb pick I always wonder how good they could have been sticking with a mediocre qb for 1 more year while drafting premier talent at a different position.

Im sorry but anyone who knows football predicted this. He only played something like 12-13 games in college. And he wasnt that mind blowing there. He had physcial gifts. Thats it. He shouldve been converted to a HB or TE. He clearly does not have the ability to be a consistently good QB. At the moment. Sure you can develop him. Something i believe is massively missing from high school football and up. Problem is you spent a 4th pick on him. This shows exactly what ive been saying for years. Just because its a NFL front office doesnt mean they’re good at judging talent or knowing what a good football player is. The majority of teams are ran by businessmen who dont understand football as much as they understand numbers. Give them numbers and theyll work magic. Problem is football goes against all if that. Look at the analytics of PFF and theres alot of players in the top ten of any category that youd immediately say arent top ten overall at their position. In AR’s case they saw the talent and threw away what you saw on film. Things that clearly stuck out. Mainly the inability to throw consistently and read coverages well

Colts fan here. I don't care that I've been spoiled with Peyton and then Luck. I really had hope for AR (even though I wanted CJ) because at least he wasn't Levis. My heart can't take this anymore. Richardson needs to work behind a veteran like Flacco to really understand the offense and the position. He had the where- withall to smoothen out his inaccuracy and rely on under and intermediate passing windo throws.

realistically, he needs to work with a coach 1 on 1 to sharpen his mechanics and improve that accuracy, it’s doable, but I wouldn’t even have him wasting time with the team until he levels that up, you spent a #4 pick on him, invest in some private throwing coaches and tell him to come back in 2 years

The problem with Anthony Richardson he did not stay in college for at least 4 years of experience of college football before entering the 2023 NFL draft if he was wise enough he would have entered the draft around at least 2025 or can I say 2026 NFL draft That's when he'll be fully developed as a passer And if he was with Nick Saban he would have been coached a lot more better because it really depends on which tutorich or program you came from in the NCAA but the problem with him is he got drafted way too early He was not ready to join the NFL and that is his biggest downfall as a quarterback

Oof. Because he's so young, perhaps his best career path is being on the bench for the rest of this year and probably next to learn as much as possible without being in the pressure cooker of a game. There was a time NFL QBs did take years to develop. Not saying AR is the next Steve Young, but Young wasn't a superstar for years (and only after finally landing with a good coaching staff). AR absolutely is not ready to be a starter for now. We'll see about future years.

I keep hearing he’s a very raw player who needs time to develop. Very raw players who need a lot of time to develop are not NFL players. The state of the NFL is fast-paced. The Colts don’t have four years to waste trying to teach AR how to throw a football six yards. He will get a few more starts next season but that’s it.

LaFleur has 2.5 years to teach an inexperienced Jordan Love who was a 2 years starter at Utah State playing in a podunk conference. Hell Zach Wilson had 2.5 years under Saleh until they front office wanted to move on. The Colts org along with their batshit owner doesn't have the patience to teach a 22 yr old with less than a year of college football reps. What makes you think they will stick with some very flawed oldhead prospect like Penix Jr. and switch him for some washed vet to get the team to the playoffs?

He doesn't understand the importance of setting your feet and correct stance to throw accurate. Donovan McNabb had this same problem, but it didn't show until he played for Washington. Richardson like McNabb have such elite arm strength that throwing off balance is easy... as far as making the distance. Most Kickers in the Free Agent pool can kick field goals over 60 yards but don't have the accuracy.

His receivers asked him to stay after practice last year to help get timing down he said no extra time practice for me. He doesn't study the film. He doesn't look at plays on the sidelines when he's injured. He doesn't try to get involved in the game in any way but when he's playing. He thinks he's the good, no he knows he's great, and thats denial or just plain LD. He said the NFL was easier than college. He also said he's the second best running quarterback in the league. He's clearly not intelligent. He can't throw the ball accurately. I don't know why we picked him. We have a running back already. He's literally the worst quarterback I've ever seen play the game. Alec Pierce and Josh downes are two of the best receivers in the league. Pittman is a good 3rd banana, but no one will ever know this because we don't have a quarterback to get them the ball.

I tried to tell people he needed to sit for at least 2 years and instead they put him in right away, got him hurt, and its been all down hill ever since. NFL teams just dont have the patience to give raw players like Richardson the long runway they need to turn the corner. So much talent wasted by impatience. With the current rules favoring offense and quarterbacks, this league could be flush with exciting offenses but instead is littered with failed young quarterbacks who were forced to play too soon which has lead to a substantial drop in the overall quality of the game. You cant make the game about the qb and then just throw them to the wolves over and over and over again. You gotta nurture the talent so they can reach their ceilings.
