As a rapper heavily inspired by Kanye West, I never gave Taylor Swift's music a chance. In this video, you'll see my first time ever time listening to a Taylor Swift album. In this video, I listen and discuss the stories/lyrics in Folklore including the Love Triangle. This is more than a reaction. This is a strong deep dive into the lyrics. Like, comment & subscribe! Please share!

"Girls don't always sing about guys " yes exactly I hate it when some people do music reactions and try so hard to match every song to a certain guy or a certain phase in a relationship when it's not about that at all. ofc people can interpret the lyrics in a way that can relate to their own life and her lyrics is usually purposefully vague enough for people to do that but also specific enough to know what exactly she's talking about. but common people are more than the relationships they've been in and it's not the only thing that goes on in a songwriters head.
@AnthonyAikenJr
@AnthonyAikenJr 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly!! Also, a lot of artist use “love” as a metaphor for something else. It’s not always a relationship with a significant other like you said. It could be about their vices, their family, their careers... etc.

In Peace, the line that goes “All these people think love’s for show but I would die for you in secret” you questioned is it heroic if it’s hidden. I feel it is because she would die for him without “showing off” her sacrifice to the world. She isn’t doing it to gain praise from everyone else, she would do it just for him.

my read on illicit affairs is she’s the other woman and she’s heading to meet him again but it’s become really sad and degrading after so many times...having to leave her perfume behind so she leaves no trace...she’s erased, like she’s not a human being who lives and has her own desires and inherent worth. my favorite parts are the variations on the chorus; illicit affairs are born from one single glance but dies one million times, tells the truth just once but lies a million little times. poetry. i appreciated your thoughtful listen to each track and your editing really adds a lot. would watch additional taylor reaction videos too ☺️

I listened to Hoax so many times because I wasn’t really sure who she was talking about at first, but I think it’s about Scott Bruchetta who she worked with since she was around fourteen years old. For the line “your love is the only hoax I believe in,” she is talking about how she saw him as another father figure, and then he destroyed it after more than a decade of working together. Also, when she sings “you know it still hurts underneath these scars from when they pulled me apart but what you did was just as dark,” I think she is referencing to the fact that he stood by her side to give her support when the public tore down her reputation, but then he turns around, doesn’t sell her back her masters, and then sells her songs to someone (Scooter) who does not respect her on any level. Also, I loved your review, and your freestyle in seven!!

Mad Woman's lines about "women like hunting witches too" and "doing your dirtiest work for you" definitely sounds like something that could've been about Scooter Braun. Scooter Braun is the manager for several big artists (ex Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande) and it seems she's had major issues with him. Last year, he bought her old label, and with that purchase, he also gained ownership of the master recordings to her first 6 albums, which she was very uncomfortable with because she doesn't trust him one bit. There were also issues with the original owner of her label (Scott Borchetta) who she had a longstanding professional relationship with and felt betrayed by when he didn't give her a chance to buy those master recordings and sold them to Scooter instead. I think My Tears Ricochet might be a bit more about Scott Borchetta and Mad Woman might be more about Scooter Braun. Anyways, she posted about the issues she was having with those two on social media, and instead of defending himself, it seems Scooter was getting others to do that "dirty work" for him. Like his wife made a long post that basically felt like she was trying to paint Taylor as crazy. Justin Bieber also made a post but there was evidence that someone else wrote the post for him (Scooter being the obvious suspect). Taylor was also close with Karlie Kloss, who was a client of Scooter Braun, and it seems like there might've been a betrayal there. Perez Hilton claimed that Taylor and Karlie Kloss weren't friends anymore because Karlie leaked personal information about Taylor to Scooter, and two of Taylor's closest friends gave a like to that Perez Hilton tweet.
@impish_snake3526
@impish_snake3526 4 жыл бұрын
With the “women like hunting witches, too” line, I thought of Kim KW, because of the debacle she started with Taylor. She hunted a witch by secretly recording Taylor’s phone call with Kanye, then editing it and posting it, effectively doing Kanye’s “dirty work” for him by devaluing Taylor’s word and defending him.
@Lochness19
@Lochness19 4 жыл бұрын
@@impish_snake3526 Kim K fits but it's been a while since that happened while the Scooter situation is more recent so that's why I was thinking it could be referring to Yael, Demi or Karlie.

@@Lochness19 I think it's about the time when Taylor was posting about the struggles with her masters and Demi Lovato signed with BMR around the same time and she said "wELl hE iS nIcE tO mE" I think that lyric is about Demi's response, Kim Kardashian, Scooter's wife and Karlie Kloss

You really need your own show. Your perspective and digging into her lyrics make it so interesting to watch, but then you have those random GIFs, memes, videos, and the awesome editing. The “wrecker of joy” GIF during The Great American Dynasty is what pushed me over and then when you got to the part where she’s the one who bought the house, I lost it laughing. I love how you really do listen to the lyrics and take it seriously, but still make it entertaining. Also, I’m a huge fan of hers and I didn’t know the part about “my tears ricochet” being about her record label. So, thank you for that 😊

I agree with a lot of the other interpretations of Illicit Affairs but I also wanted to add that I think the lyric "you showed me colors you know I can't see with anyone else" and "a language I can't speak with anyone else" can be double entendres. I think it does refer to the connection she holds with this person and how she has developed feelings, but I also think it refers to the secrecy of their relationship. She sees colors when they're together and they have a language for only the two of them; however, it's only between the two of them. She can't tell anyone or be open about their relationship.

She was talking about Scott Borchetta who was her label that had been with her since the beginning decided to off and sell her masters to Scooter. That's what my tears ricochet was about. Taylor said that this album has a fictional love triangle. So I think that illicit affairs is the point of view of the other woman the mistress.

indeed, there is a love triangle story there, between betty, james, and another girl. cardigan : betty POV betty : james POV august : the other girl POV and i think that my tears ricochet, mad woman, and hoax is about scott borchetta and then invisible string, and peace is about her and her boyfriend, joe alwynn 💕

this could be just my interpretation but illicit affairs could be about how she hid her relationship with joe alwyn from the media for like a year

She and Joe were only dating for a few months before the media found out. Taylor was still dating Tom Hiddleston in September 2016 so the earliest she could have started dating Joe was October 2016 to March 2017 when they started being photographed together. Illicit Affairs is more likely about her secret 4 year relationship with Harry Styles.

Re: Illicit Affairs, Taylor an amazing storyteller and songwriter, but sometimes she switches who she's talking to (who "you" is) in like the same damn verse and it's so confusing and definitely takes a few listens to figure out when she's talking to herself and when she's talking to someone who hurt her lol.

She describes mirrorball as a song about how she had to cancel her lover tour so she felt like this shiny thing just hanging there with no one around to see the beauty. And that being broken in a million pieces is what makes a mirrorball beautiful. I’m bad at explaining but yeah. She wanted to create the feeling of being at a lonely dive bar with a dance floor and only a few regulars. I love your connection to my tears ricochet tho! And I love your freestyle!

Also this is me trying is about how trying your best is often not good enough. And how this person struggling with depression or addiction or whatever “drove their car off the road to the look out” and could have just driven off the cliff. But they turned around and drove back to their person or friend. And that is thag ultimate act of trying.

Idk if someone has explained this so I will. Taylor has said three songs tell the story of a teen love triangle. Cardigan is the pov of Betty, August is the pov of Inez, and Betty is the pov of James. And my personal theory is that illicit affairs is an overview of the situation and just a telling of what happened :)

illicit affairs is from the perspective of the other girl knowing they're the other girl. u know ur doing something bad, and ur sneaking around, and there's something beautiful about this secret that you have, this intimate world that ur sharing with this other person, but it'll only remain just that - a secret. it goes from affairs in your room, or the living space of the guy and his actual gf (james n betty in this case) to brief meetings in the parking lots and stares that are captured by chance. she leaves the perfume on the shelf she picked out for him because she doesn't want to leave the scent lingering because they don't wanna get caught. it's a dwindling mercurial high, because it used to be highs all the time, but the sneaking around is starting to get painful, because this world and intimacy ur sharing is only limited to the stolen moments you get with each other once in awhile. it goes from feeling like shit knowing ur the other girl, to being on top of the world experiencing this clandestine bliss ur engaging in. it's volatile, knowing that ur secret meetings together are the only place to live your truth, but every other waking moment is spent lying to urself and everyone else around u. but u as the other girl are in too deep, this affair ur engaging with has made it impossible to connect, the secret language u learn and the colors u see only pertinent to this one person. and u would ruin yourself for them and do it again a million little times 😭

I know the songs are all about different situations and not all are related to the love triangle but if you pay attention they actually are related to each other. I mean even the lyrics are all interconnected. Lemme show you what I mean. The one - Betty looking back at her life and thinking of James. Cardigan- this is again Betty's POV The last great American dynasty - this is the story of Rebekah harkness who was the last owner of the Rhode Island mansion which is now owned by Taylor ( also her nickname was Betty. Coincidence? I guess not) Exile- this is Betty and James having a conversation (more like an argument of sorts) My tears ricochet- the song is actually big machine who owns taylor's previous albums (but actually if you think of the love triangle then this is James's funeral and parts of it are sung by both Betty and James) Mirroball- actually about fame and what comes with it (taylor's perspective) but also from the other girls perspective (the August girl) she's singing it to James. Seven- actually about Taylor when she was young but also James and Betty when they were young. August- this is the other girl's POV This is me trying- this is James talking to Betty. Telling her he's trying Illicite affairs- about James and the other girl. Invisible string- actually about Taylor and Joe Mad woman- about Taylor in reality but also inspired by Rebekah harkness (Betty harkness) and also cuz I'm such a GOT fan I think of it as a song for Daenerys and how they made her go crazy mad in the end (cuz society can't deal with a woman in power /toxic patriarchy). Believe me if you're a GOT fan think of dany while listening to this one and you'll know what I mean. Epiphany - about her granddad who was in the army and current corona pandemic around the world. Also from the triangle this is James joining the army and then dying (funeral in my tears ricochet) and Betty going through shit in her own life. Betty - James's POV Peace- Taylor and Joe Hoax- Betty dealing with James's death. Phew. That was long. You guys probably won't read it but this is how I perceive the songs. And I also get a lot of hate for it when I tell people this but honestly Taylor is such an amazing songwriter that you can percieve the songs the way you want them to. That's the beauty of this album. You take it the way you want to take it. Understand it the way you want. That's why it's called folklore. And it's one of the best albums ever written. I said what I said. Y'all can come for me now.

You’re a lot of fun reacting in real time. Your insights are awesome. The song seven though, she and her friend are just little girls here so that’s pretty heartbreaking. My favorite track. Hey, how creative you are with your rap. I don’t follow TS either but always like a few songs on each of her albums. It’s her lyrics, that’s why. Oh, Invisible String is a good song, too. It’s like, okay the album is full of heartbreak but then she met her true love so it’s all good now. I hope this love sticks because she can be so bitter when she loses and I don’t wanna hear it anymore. lol oh probably others have mentioned this but she writes a lot about love and betrayal on this album, yeah there’s a love triangle and she said she created these characters in silence so while she calls upon her own experience with that stuff, she’s happy in love now so she’s just storytelling, which is definitely her one big thing. If she had no ear for music she’d be a writer for sure. In fact, I hope she writes a story collection someday. She’s a true writer and her lyrics are why she hits just right for so many.

the 1 - betty's pov cardigan - betty's pov tlgad - must be betty too because rebeka's nickname was betty (although taylor relate herself to her story) exile - betty, james pov my tears ricochet - taylor to scott borchetta mirrorball - taylor to fans seven - taylor's childhood (you can relate betty and james too on how they've met on their childhood) august - side chick pov (inez) this is me trying - james pov illicit affairs - side chick pov (inez) invisible string - taylor to joe mad woman - taylor to scott borchetta/scooter epiphany - about Taylor's grandfather died in ww2/second verse she relates the death of her grandfather to the heroes we have today, the frontliners betty - james pov peace - taylor to joe hoax - taylor to joe (talks about what-ifs, what if joe would hurt him, which is a hoax on her mind at this point) it was a great body of work, I think the purpose of them being not in order was because it really starts a conversation to the point where she really wants you to connect the dots probably a marketing strategy as well but omg I just want to say that this was my favorite Taylor Swift album ever. This is just I wanted from her from the beginning to really flex her poetry side because she really was a great writer. Before this album my favorite was Speak Now which is a solely written album and she just showed on that project how genius she was as a songwriter without the help of others. Now that she elevated that with folklore I couldn't even prouder as a huge fan. Anyway, your reaction was great and very insightful. We enjoyed the gifs and stuff. I also love the fact you do your own research while you listen to the song because man listening to a Taylor Swift song is not just a common pop song, there's always this bigger picture behind it.
