Sarah Burkett No. #1, my hate for the Grammys has nothing to do with Taylor Swift not winning. If you watch my channel, you’ll know that I just started enjoying her music a few weeks ago. My hate for the Grammys comes from how they treat Hip Hop artists and Black artists as a whole. There have only been two hip hop albums in the history of the genre to win AOTY and those were crossover albums. Also, watch Tyler The Creator’s speech at last year’s Grammys where he expressed his disappointment at his album being labeled “Hip Hop” when it was clearly anything but that. That’s why I hate the Grammys. So, yes, they don’t get anything right.

@pencilxthoughts4 жыл бұрын
the way you pointed out that half of this album is dark and the other half is romantic poetry is EXACTLY what it is-- she made this album while she was in hiding from the public after the kanye phone call fiasco in 2016. it was the darkest and most difficult point in her life, and YET at the same time, as this ordeal was happening, she found the "king of her heart", the man she's been waiting for. so while her entire world outside her four walls was crumbling, insider, she's safe with him. (this is better described in her Miss Americana docu). so yeah (almost) every love song in this album is about him-- the one who saw through the darkness and loved her despite her reputation at the time

So the whole reputation album is satirical. Taylor took on the persona that the media had been building about her for years which culminated with the Kim and Kanye drama (a liar, a snake, travelling across the globe ensaring all these men, playing the victim etc - imagine it like a female fatal figure, the classic demonized woman). So Taylor took these characteristics and wrote her album in that persona, think of it as 'well if I can't beat them (get back her ruined reputation) then I'll just become what they want me to be, but I'll go further and do it better than they could have imagined'. She dissapeared from the spotlight and wasn't seen publically for a year, her mantra for this album was 'there will be no explanation there will only be reputation'. She addressed all of these media cultivated opinions about her through her music, in that way the album is named very literally! Such a genius album and unless you know all of the context it's hard to really understand and appreciate it's brilliance!! All while this was going on she was falling in love with someone who didn't care about all of the drama and her reputation, so she also writes about this aspect of reputation on the album! If you watch Miss Americana on Netflix it explains a lot more of what was going on behind the scenes!!
@AnthonyAikenJr4 жыл бұрын
Ellie Smith Hey!! So, I just want to put this out there!! I really enjoyed this album and think it’s genius even without the context. She is incredibly talented and the production on here is insane. The best thing about this album is how she managed to tell a story through the track order and even the production of the songs. You're right when you noticed that the album took a turn midway. It started with noise with Ready For It (the first songs were overly produced and even distorted her voice on some) and ended with New Year's Day with just her piano and her raw vocals. It really captured how despite her chaotic life she learned to tune out the noise and find peace.

Getaway car is about her relationship with Tom Hiddlestone back in 2016. Before being with him Taylor had a relationship with Calvin Harris but wasn't going well, so almost inmediatly after they slipped up she had this summer thing with Tom. The song talks about a relationship that she knows that wasn't going to last and describe it as a "getaway car", basically she was escaping from the other relation, you can say this too when she says "I wanted to leave him, I needed a reason". When she says "think about the place where you first met me" or "we were flying but we'd never get far" she is explaining to this "getaway car person" that they can't be together forever because of the situation where they met and had this fling, they weren't meant to be together in the end, she explains this also in the part of Bonnie and Clyde.

I personally think that Reputation has some of her best lyrics. Red, Speak Now, and Folklore are definitely her best lyrically. But I think Reputation beats out all the others when it comes to lyrics. Reputation has always felt like that album that never got nearly as much appreciation as it deserves.
@Rana-Ehab-Mohamed2 жыл бұрын
Not really Taylor is the best female songwriter of her generation, therefore Reputation would be stronger than most pop albums out there, because of the amount of metaphors that she uses and her ability to tell a full story in 3 minutes while keeping the rhyme Dress, getaway car, dancing with our hands tied, don't blame me, new year's day, call it what you want, and I did something bad's bridge are all perfect examples for great lyricism
@geegeezlouis864 жыл бұрын
I also did not like how much vocal distortion was on this album but it's grown on me a lot to the point where Reputation is my favorite of hers (folklore is a close second). I feel like a lot of the distortion is representing how she felt, someone took her words and distorted them so badly that #taylorswiftisoverparty was trending worldwide. People gleefully celebrated her demise over something she didn't do, and she felt so powerless and voiceless that she just went into hiding. That's part of why this album speaks to me so much, because it's so vulnerable and angry at the same time.
@AnthonyAikenJr4 жыл бұрын
I never thought of it that way. Maybe her mind was distorted and her voice was filtered through lies and headlines. If that’s the case, I see why they did it. I hope it grows on me...

She even compare herself to a witch cause of how witches back then were treated even though they didn't do anything wrong. Don't blame me- Taylor for always falling in love but this time its serious Delicate- how scared she is to be in a relationship cause of the media and kimye ruined her reputation. Look what you made me do- about kim,kanye,her ood record label scott and haters. Getaway Car- about her relationship with Tom hiddlestone. Its really a short romance but it is still beautiful. She even used Bonnie and Clyde to describe their relationship. Like bonnie and Clyde is Taylor and tom while the one chasing them the detective is Calvin Harris her ex who keeps on calling her out and says bad things about her wHile she's traveling and dating tom that time. This is why we can't have nice things- about kanye back stabbing her even though she gave him second chance of finally be friends after all that VMA incident. So it goes,gorgeous, king of my heart,dancing with our hands tied, dress, call it what you want and new years day- all about her BF Joe. Reputation speaks for itself that's why Taylor never made any interview to promote it.

"should have known i'd be the first to leave, think about the place you first met me" the guy should have known she'd leave him because when they met she was leaving someone else. he drove the "getaway car" helping her get away, and then she took the keys and she's driving the getaway car, leaving him.

it's hard to fully understand the album without context. I would recommend looking into what she went through around 2016-2017-18, when the public turned against her and what it took for her to come back. she disappeared for a whole year and completely wiped her social media clean. I'm not sure if you're aware of how deep the history with K*m and K*ny* goes (its MESSY). This album was her taking her tarnished public image and making it a part of her brand, which was an incredibly smart marketing tactic. She's the most business savvy person in the entire music industry, that's how she's been able to last this long. btw, the technological term you were looking for on KOMH is vocoder. that's the machine that makes you sound like a robot

I really love love LOVE how much you pay attention to the lyrics and how the songs relate to one another. Especially for Taylor’s albums she has themes and specific imagery that permeates throughout whole albums. In 1989 it was the whole city lights, headlights and car imagery. In rep she had so much mentions of kingdoms, crime, and escape. I also love your editing and how much research gather so much visual aid. Love this!

I like how you give each song an honest chance, not everyone does that when they react to albums/songs so I want to put an emphasis on how you go into each album without being determined to either love or hate it. And the perspective of someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of the troubles the media have given her is also really interesting! I loved your reaction to 1989 and folklore too!

I have liked Taylor Swift since her first album. I’m not a country fan, but a good song is a good song, and she has always written good songs. Reputation was a major adjustment for me. It took me a little while to really appreciate it like I do now. It was a great experiment for her. If you truly love an artist you will stick with them through all their changes and left turns, because eventually you’ll get something that is perfect for you. Folklore for me was perfection. It was everything I wanted in a Taylor Swift album. You’re reactions have been great, and it’s always nice to see someone be open-minded and appreciate her like I have all these years. Keep it up 👍🏼

I'm so happy to find out you ended up buying the cardigan lol. In other matters, I've listened to this album so many times and watched so many reactions on it, but there are some things I got from you I've never thought of or heard from other reactors. One is how the album can tell a pretty twisted continuous story. Another is how the "go, go, go" on Getaway Car was shaky to express the urgency in her voice. Really enjoyed your reaction!

This album (forgive me if I'm repeating a comment) was made after her "fall" (her words, not mine!). "This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" is about her "friendship" with Kanye. There are references to his douchebaggery in other songs, as well. (LWYMMD) She has emerged from the resurrected feud with this album. It's brilliant, in my opinion.

In getaway car, she’s using a metaphor of a crime/ getaway car and I think she’s basically saying that she used a guy to leave another relationship, and then she left him too-he should’ve seen it coming because of where their relationship started.
@josefinaazpiroz4 жыл бұрын
Yeah she is talking about how she started dating tom hiddlestone to brake up with calvin harris but she didnt love him she just needed a reason to break up with calvin. And the song is her reflecting on that and saying you knew this was going to happen, that i was gonna leave you, think abput how we met (Ironically they met at the Met gala)

This actually makes a lot of sense. She kept saying “we’re sorry” which means there was someone assisting her getting away from the relationship. Thank you

I think the line in New Years Day where she says “don’t read the last page” could also symbolize the fact that she was finally in a relationship that she felt content and safe in. For once, neither of them were rushing to read the last page to see exactly where they were headed because they didn’t need all the answers. They were happy together and could finally just enjoy the journey

I definitely agree with what you said about each album sounding different than the previous albums in mood and sound and tone. The album right after Reputation is called Lover and thats the "day" version of Rep's "night". Its closer to 1989 sonically but even then,its not not the same. Taylor creates "worlds" with her albums that are its own thing. I recommend that one! In any case,it sounds like you've become quite the fan lol.

To pimp a butterfly maybe a better album in your opinion but the thing is 1989 wasnt just lyrically and production wise a masterpiece. It is the most awarded pop album of all time.the sales and performances,the tour,the fact that this was her first time trying pop music and the synth pop sounds. I saw an interview clip where she was asked who she would most like to collab with and her answer was Eminem! I would LOVE to hear that. She grew up on rap like everyone and I think she would love to explore that. Knowing her it would be amazing. Also I read that the person she wrote about for “This is why we can’t have nice things” is actually about Karlie Kloss, at one time one of her inner circle girl squad. Apparently Karlie did not have her back, was unkind/unsupportive at a low period in Taylor’s life and in the end Taylor felt used by her.

Been waiting for this reaction from you :) Rep is a whole ass mood and I'm glad you liked it! I love how you noticed the sound transitioning from bombastic and angry to soft and happy. And again, I love your freestyle in Dress!! Few notes: Dancing with our hands tied is about feeling that the relationship is doomed from the start because of outside pressure -- from media, from people who think they have a say on her relationships. Their hands were tied. I think this is about Tom Hiddleston. New Years Day is about finding someone you want to stick with through it all. She's saying, while everyone is looking forward to kissing someone on new year's eve, she'll be around to clean up bottles with him on new years day. Like, she wants to be there in celebrations with him but also in all the mess. I think you're gonna love the reputation stadium tour on netflix. :) Thanks for this reaction!
