BEFORE LEAVING A COMMENT TELLING ME COAST GAURD REGULATIONS, please be aware that I fully understand the required degree of visibility per USCG and fully acknowledge that my boat is not in compliance. THIS IS SIMPLY A VIDEO TO SHOW YOU THE LED LIGHTS AND HOW I DID MY INSTALL. Take what you can from it and by all means, install your navigation lights your way. I recommend always checking rules and regulations before installing. Me personally, decided the traditional deck mount nav lights ran in your grandpa's boat did not fit the aesthetics of my build. I opted the route you see in this video. I fish mainly only electric only reservoirs with minimal boat traffic and hardly ever am out after dark. These lights, believe it or not, are more than most boats on electric lakes have. If I were to go in larger bodies of water or the ocean per say, I would reevaluate my navigation light set up. Based on my personal circumstances and where I fish, this is my choice of how i modify my boat. As always, please take what you can from this video, if you feel to be the USCG rules and regulations guy and drop a comment, I will probably delete it.
LED Navigation Lights in this video:
amzn.to/2WPjXvT
In the latest video of #tinyboatgarage featuring the #topgunjonboat, I go over the installation process of my LED NAVIGATION LIGHTS.
The format on this video is different, more of a "how I did it", opposed to my usual step by step approach. Nonetheless, I go over in detail the materials/tools needed, as well as the install process of how I installed my led nav lights with a custom interior lip/catch system.
Check it out! Feedback welcomed! Enjoy!

Hey Anthony, you are going to want to put some rubber grommets in those holes where you drilled into the bow and put your wires, otherwise you risk chafing the wires and causing a short and possible fire on the boat. Otherwise, that is a fine looking job you did on it. To avoid having to pull the wires out to install the grommets, just slice the grommets, and then put some silicone around the split and wires to seal it all up and you should be fine. Catch some bass for me, I'm in Michigan waiting for spring so I can get back out on the water hopefully with my own boat's mods finished by then.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
Great suggestion! I may just squirt some silicone or adhesive gently into the hole to secure the wiring and ensure no rubbing. Hole was drilled to wire size so already pretty tight fit but good suggestion nonetheless!

Looks great.... USCG approved or not, I guarantee they have more visibility than mine, which are. With that said, I know what you're talking about... angle of visibility is very important, but I've also seen debates about the actual color of these types of lights not being exactly right... again, makes no sense when you compare these to the faded lenses on my USCG approved lights (technically, I probably need to replace them)... I run a major river where such things are more important. One thing you might consider is wiring them to a DPDT switch. The rule is if you're not under power (so anchored or drifting) only the stern light is on, if you are under power, both (stern and bow) lights are on. But hey, I mean no criticism, you do you. Congrats on your son, mine will be here sometime in the next two weeks. And congrats to your wife on the new house, and you on the new shop 😁.

Thanks man! Good times getting settled in with the little guy and looking forward to tricking my shop out! Great info! I now believe I will wire separately. What you said makes perfect sense. If I wire together, I will only have ability to kill pole light by taking it out. I would have no way to leave power to pole and kill power to nav in case of anchoring. I'll look into what I can do, only issue is I already fabbed out panel which houses switches. Not to late to make changes though. Thanks again!
@TheRfmodulator
@TheRfmodulator 5 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats if you're using the standard Carling/ARB sized switches, you can buy a DPDT on-off-on from amazon... i got one for my lights, and one that is momentary on-off-on for my tilt trim. But I'm sure you can get a DPDT in whatever form factor you went with.

Hey man, good project, love your boat! I just had one little thing that came to my head when i saw them. Regulations say that the lights must be visible from 25 degrees past the perpendicular line of your boat. This is because when a boat is coming from behind , it will be able to see your nav lights. In this case, the boat has to pass the perpendicular beam of the boat, in order to have the lights visible.

I know this is an old video, but if you find some clear flush mount (think penny size) and install them in the pupils of your painted eyes. Then you’d have your side lights. By clear, I mean clear lens but colored illumination of course

Sounds like the wire you are using is not large enough to handle the current draw of both lights together. If I where you I would run 12 gauge wire as much as I could get away with.

I believe your rear white light has to be on the right rear not the left as you have it mounted
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
In state of GA a 32 Pt. stern light/All Around white light must be operated in junction with red/green nav lights on any boat under 26 ft when underway at night. When anchored, only white all around stern light stays on. Doesn't matter where its mounted so long as it's mounted anywhere at the rear of the boat, shines light 32 points or all around, and is coast guard approved/ visible from 2 miles.

why blue light on the inside instead of white?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
Blue is a softer light on the eyes. Just a blue hue w these as opposed to a bright white light. I want to be able to see my gear not be blinded while doing so. I honestly should have used red because by military standards it's the best hue processed at night with the least amount of disruption without being over bearing.

@@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats thanks man did you crimp the wires from the led's to 14 gauge or did you solider the wires ?
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 5 жыл бұрын
@@sstatic6093 I tied the 2 wires to one 14 gauge but honestly 16 would be more than sufficient. I just had 14. Tied 2 to 1 w crimp connector covered in marine heat shrink wrap. They also make the solder connectors where you heat them up and the do a solder in the middle. I didn't get to fancy though. As long as your crimps are good and you pull on them and your heat shrink shrinks up tight no problems.

Nice install but not at all USCG approved lighting. Unapproved lighting will land you a ticket with penalties up to $ 1,000. Each bow navigation light must be visible from dead on and up to 125 deg abeam ( each side). Red port, green starboard. I presently fish the St. Clair river which drains Lake Huron towards Lake Erie. Being on the border with Canada there is lots of law enforcement in our area, any discrepancies in safety can land hard on a guy. I had to remove my LED’s before I could pass inspection. Fortunately I had my original navigation lights still in place and was allowed to progress. This is just a heads up for anyone wishing to follow suit. Personally I like the LED’s. They’re bright.
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats
@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats 4 жыл бұрын
I stated in video not coast guard approved, not proper degree of visibility, where I fish i am fine w no issues, simply an installation video. Also, where I live in state of Georgia, no inspections. Purchase and install at own personal situation, I have been fine with mine, no issues. Lastly, degree of visibility for nav lights must be 225.
