In this video you pretty much summarize and solve all the "issues" I had with Memory Palaces. I don't have those issues any longer, but am nonetheless glad I watched this video. It was a liberating moment once I came to grips with MPs, because they make memorizing so much easier and effective. To me MPs are the cornerstone of each learning project and it's become my mantra "MP first!" whenever I want to memorize anything bigger.
@AnthonyMetivierMMM2 жыл бұрын
Love that Mantra! Do you have specific decision metrics for knowing when something is big enough for an MP or too small? For example, I use an MP even for just one name.
@mr.pickitt54262 жыл бұрын
@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Hi Anthony, interesting that you are using an MP for even just one name. I havn't gotten far with remembering names yet, but I am going to look at it soon. When I decide whether something is "worth" an MP, I ask myself first, whether I want to keep it in my long term memory. Currently, that applies to two poems and ten songs (lyrics and chords). But I would also use an MP, if had to learn a lot of information in a short time, eg for a job interview, even though I might not intend to keep that in my long-term memory. For shopping lists and the likes I use my Alphabet (A=Ape, B=Bear, C=Chamelion, etc. )

There are so many answers to my questions in this video actually! I have one outstanding question though. If 26 is the ideal amount of memory palaces, could you take for example a town, and call that one memory palace and connect the buildings that already hold different related subjects in them? Or should each building be considered as 1?

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM I just wrote a long response and it got deleted. Right now I am memorizing through the 613 mitzvot list (commandments in the Bible) which is utterly boring, but good for discipline. I am 222 in, each one having 5 information points (number, instruction, chapter, verse) so it is about 1110 associations so far that are stored. After that is done I want to memorize through the 5 books of Moses, which I am thinking of doing letter by letter in Hebrew, which I don't speak. I'm more interested in learning about physics though and mathematics. The number memorization I do because it is a way to memorize through large amounts of specific data very quickly and practice concentration and association quality in a way which is very easy to measure. This is actually why I was thinking of doing the letter-by-letter memorization of the Hebrew, as it is the same sort of thing (large amounts of specific data memorized quickly using a coded system). I figure if I did 300 connections per day, it would take 1,010 days. I am trying to get my brain doing this stuff naturally for normal stuff, which it is starting to do, but I think won't really do for another 1-2 years perhaps of practice. Gradually it is sort of fixing me. Long story.

Hello, Anthony! I have a question that you must get a lot. Is it ok to have lots of subjects inside the same memory palace? For example, I need to memorize stuff about 13 different subjects. I was thinking about creating a different palace for each one, but then I watched a couple of videos in which you claim the best strategy is to have palaces based on the alphabet. That sounds pretty logical to me, but the fact the information might get jumbled up really concerns me. I guess it would be best if I had 26 palaces for each subject, but that would require 338 palaces, which is unthinkable to me right now considering I'm not even sure if I can come up with 26!
@AnthonyMetivierMMM2 жыл бұрын
I do get it a lot and there’s a direct answer here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i57XXpyko6Zgq5o There’s more knowledge on how to do it well in my course with an example from my TEDx Talk, a Memory Palace used three times for three texts with zero confusion. If you can’t come up with 26, work with what you’ve got and build from there. The world is a big place and the more you improve your memory, the more options you’ll find. Does this way of looking at things help you out? 🙏

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Woah, you answer so fast! Haha. Thank you so much :) I'd like to ask something else. I used to go to this school when I was really small (like 5 or something) and I don't remember the details, but I do remember the general location of some rooms (like classrooms, bathrooms, food court). So while trying to draw a map, I realized there are a few rooms that I'm sure existed because I remember being inside them (I even have a photo in one of them), but I don't remember where they were in relation to the other rooms, therefore I don't know where to put them in the map. I also remember a second floor in one of the buildings, but I'm not sure where the stairs were. Do you think it'd be a bad idea to use it as a memory palace considering how hazy my memory of it is? I think it's got a decent size, but since I don't remember the details, it'll probably boil down to 13 rooms or so. There's also the fact that I don't have particularly good memories in there. I don't know if that might hinder the process or if it'd make it easier to memorize. My next school I remember in much more detail and I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to split it in smaller palaces since it was at least 10x bigger than my first school.

@@AnthonyMetivierMMM Not sure who edited it but the full title is "The new art of memory, founded upon the principles taught by M. Gregor von Feinaigle:" Basically he states to divide the floor of a room into nine squares and do the same with the walls. The walls get an extra square on top. He then fills these squares with pictures that resemble the number of the square. He associates what he wants to remember with the image in the square. What intrigues me is that the layout will always be the same no matter which room you are in (same with the "Vaughn Cube"). Also let's say you have an old memory Palace (ex. Child hood home) where some of the rooms are vivid but some are vague. You could possibly use this technique with the vague rooms.

There are times when having the same layout is useful, but when I use that approach, I do it much more simply than what you're describing and simpler yet than the Vaughn Cube.
