Great video Anthony! Thank you so much. Personally speaking, I don't think you ever need to apologize because you are the one who is making all the effort to make your all followers learn. We can never thank you enough for your videos, as a result of which all your followers come back to you repeatedly.... in fact that's the biggest certificate how much we all value of presentations. The little things like covering the viewfinder or the tips like 1st shooting in aperture priority then reviewing the EXIF and using the same to shoot in manual mode when using the ND Filter are great tips and can only come out from a teacher who is experienced enough. We all are a great fan of yours and love your screen presence. Cheers...

Great video, Anthony! Another way to insure you don’t disturb your focus is to use back button focus !! You can keep it in auto focus which locks your focus point, But it wont try to refocus when you push the shutter button! It works great for me...

That was a great video Anthony! I shoot with a Sony a7r Mark 3. Because the camera is mirrorless I don't have to worry about light leaks as you mentioned in your video. I also don't have to take a photo before I take my actual shot with the ND filter on my camera. I simply put the ND filter on and I can look either through the electronic viewfinder or look at the back of the camera and the camera will automatically adjust itself so I can see what I'm going to get before I shoot it. If it wants to go for more than 30 seconds I simply raise the iso or open up the aperture for a little bit more light and take the shot. One of the big mistakes I usually make is I forget to turn off image stabilization. My camera will also Focus with the 10 stop ND filter on it. I use back button Focus to do my focusing.

Another great tutorial- thank you! I use ND filters frequently and one of the best tools I’ve come across for filter use is the XUME filter adapter system. Not cheap, but incredibly helpful for attaching filters without altering composition and focus as sometimes happens when screwing a filter on. Their lens caps make life happier too.

Nice video and I think do fine in front of the camera! Over the years I have accumulated Polarizers, ND, and specialty filters in many different sizes. My current walk-around lens (Sigma 24-105A) uses 82mm filters but most of my other lenses use 67mm or 77mm. To save weight and space I only carry 82mm filters and the necessary Step-Up Rings in my camera bag. It's funny how some people complain about a lens or filter vignetting, remove it in lens correction, but then add vignetting as an effect.

Nice video, but I’m confused. The app doesn’t account for the aperture you choose. You used f11, and then in Av noted your shutter speed to input into the app. What if I wanted to used f4? What am I missing? Seems that the more light coming in at f4 would decrease the exposure time.

When you hit the back button it will auto focus and take your thumb off the button and release the shutter. That is the way I recompose my stationary shots all the time. very nice tuto. just downloaded nd timer. can you explain the live view mode ? does live view makes images better exposed than viewfinder with ND filter ? don't you think pressing lcd with fingers on the focus point induces a lot of shake like pressing the shutter button on a tripod ? i ask that because i purchased a d5600 full spectrum to lifepixel with a 665nm external filter and i need to use liveview but i have a less accurate view than in viewfinder and in hand, when i hold the camera at one hand and press on lcd to take picture it shakes and is less focused of course. i must say i am very uncomfortable using a liveview.

Great tips as always Anthony. I've watched quite a few of your tutorials over the years, they are great. I had never thought about covering up the viewfinder before to stop light getting in there. Thinking about it, my past cameras have always had electronic ones, but my Canon 80D, which I've not bought filters for yet, I'm not sure, so I will have to check on that. I have tried one or two long exposures without filters, at or after sunset, or using the double exposure feature my Canon has that allows you to stack photos in camera, but I really need ND filters to do a better job of it and I'm looking at getting the Nisi circular filters. Well that was weird, that woman filming you. Maybe she wanted the information you were saying to improve her own photography skills. But hey, I'm not comfortable in front of the camera either, so that's totally understandable. I'd feel worse and would probably have to wait till she had disappeared till I could carry on, or come back another day. I have to script everything and use an autocue app on my phone or I just forget everything I want to say. My mind goes blank.

Hello Anthony great information you offered on this tutorial. I just wanted to stop by and inform you that i too have a D850 (best camera ever) and if you use the touch screen to take the shot on bulb mode the camera’s shutter will stay open on bulb mode on its own until you touch the screen again. This helps by not needing to hold down the shutter button on the top of the camera which might give you camera shake and not needing a cable in order for bulb mode to stay open. Just a quick tip.

I almost bought that filter last month, but then decided to buy a 10-stop square filter by K&F Concept for 69.99. So far, I like it, but it does seem to have a blue cast which is easily fixed. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong because I have only been doing long exposures for about a month. I have gotten some pretty good shots with it and don't feel a need to spend hundreds of dollars on an ND filter.

I have never taken long exposure landscapes before, and today, I decided to go to KZbin for some tutorials. I found about six, including yours. As usual, yours was by far the simplest, but more importantly, you explained the detail like you were a professional TV announcer. Obviously, to me, the lady shooting you shooting didn't hurt your instruction at all. I have one question: can you recommend a really good remote shutter release. I have bought two Vello's in the past 6 months and one broke and one is just not satisfactory for me. I paid about $50 for both. The are infrared. Many thanks.

I have this filter, I'm very happy with the images I have produced with it. Excellent product. On another note, with my workflow, I use manual mode only. Also, an eyepiece shield should be used to cover the eyepiece, this stops stray light from getting in and causing light leaks. I had more than a few images ruined because of this. I use the shield all the time.

Anthony, thank you for this video. Over the years I also have this vignette effect on the pictures with a wider angle lens. Now I know the tips to get rid off this problem. On my past experience with the 10-stop Lee filter, I noticed that a lot of time the pictures came out a lot darker than they should be. This should not be from the change of light conditions alone based on the situation I am at the time. The reason was my Lee filter has some discrepancies, in my case 3/4 of a second. And this they said it is possible. What I am trying to say is that with a high quality brand, it is not always perfect and you may want to test the filter you buy. Thank you for your videos!

Thanks again for a great video. A low cost ND filter might be worth getting to play with. Just wish there was an easy way to use the D850 and not have to hold the shutter release button for the whole time. Need to play with the new version of Snapbridge to see if that's a low cost option.

I think you risk camera shake. My own experience is like Anthony's - focus/turn off focus/put on ND filter/shoot. A shutter release cord is almost manditory regardless of the shutter speed you end up with for similar reasons. Minimise touching the camera once the exposure starts.

You should suggest the viewers consider using a cabled intervalometer that will set a delay start to the shutter release then be able to set a long exposure of up to a time of hh:mm:ss. Another words a long exposure almost to an infinite interval of time. Don’t get those supplied by the camera manufactures which are fabulously expense but rather get the generic brands that while not high quality do cost almost nothing.
