Hi Gary.... Greetings from Bali....., thank you so much for your respond, very appreciated ... I will do and follow exactly your Tutorial here..., and the plan is this week end.. go to the quite beach (*___*). Never stop to learn about Longexp.., what I think also the point in here is the Filter ND it's self who can make the Longexp Landscape result is "Amazing Picture". I'm not use Haida Filter... just using ND10 mid quality filter... (no doubted for Haida). I'm sure that I still can get the better Longexp quality photos too....

Yes there is no image stabilisation switch on the lenses so I have to go into camera menus to find it , which is a real faff and pain . I know to get a good quality image it needs to be switched off but I was wonder if with built in it was so detrimental

Pretty much the only difference I have is as I use back button focus I don't need to switch the lens to manual. Additionally I've found my camera will happily expose (down to 30s) with a 10 stop filter so I can take the photo in aperture priority mode which makes me a little quicker. Anything over 30s I too need an app etc. What are your thoughts re mirror lock up? Have you found it necessary?

One of the easiest and best instructional videos on Long Exposure! Only thing I don't understand is, why your channel doesn't have over 100-k subscribers yet! I challenge all of Gary's subscribers to invite one person to join. That would push this channel over the 100-k mark! This channel deserves it! Thanks Gary from one of your followers in the USA!

Very nice most of my long exposure are 35mm film at night and my lense is open for hrs. Shooting that way since the late 70s. Just this week I purchased my first digital camera that is not a pocket point and shoot. I found your teaching very accurate without extra fluff. So thank you for that. This weekend I plan on going to lassen volcanic national park and applying you're teachings with my new toy a sony slt a77ll. Your short class is expertly executed. I picked up enough to improve on it. Thanks for sharing. Keep shooting. Keep sharing.

Great video, I use pretty much the same technique when doing long exposures. One tip regarding the Lee big stopper app. There's a lee proglass app in the app store that has a few extra functions making it even more useful (for example combining ND filters, having a timer, etc...). Same icon but red instead of blue, also completely free.

I like the simplified method very nice. One point, I believe you left one item out that I believe is very important. The back viewfinder should be covered with an eyepiece cap during exposure available for most cameras. This ensures that stray light does not enter and ruin the shot. This is especially true as the exposure gets longer. I had this happen when I was learning the process and the stray light left color casts and light streaks which ruined the photographs. This is a standard procedure for all my long exposure photography.
@GaryGough
@GaryGough 4 жыл бұрын
My camera isn't effected by light entering the eyepiece on any exposures upto 4 minutes long. If I shoot longer exposures during a very sunny day then I will always cover the eyepeice. I have mentioned this a few times before. I'm not sure what camera you are using Charles but I would be very worried if light was creeping into the eyepeice on a 2-minute exposure

Good work Gary. A tip to work out long exposures without the apps: once set up in AV mode the camera will show 30 blinking if it needs longer to exposure. Simply double ISO to 200. Still blinking? Double again to 400. It might now show say 25secs to exposure correctly. Now go into bulb mode, same aperture, set ISO back to 100 then double 25secs twice ie 50 then 1min40. BINGO! Not only don’t you need the smart phone but it gives your brain a nice mental workout 🤪

Using NDTimer or Lee ND app are life savers. I have switched to Lee's Pro IRND to avoid the color cast with their original ND filters. Don't forget to cover up viewfinder for longer exposures to prevent light leaks. Nice tutorial. As you know the histogram is a JPEG representation of the RAW image. I typical ETTR without clipping giving more room to play with the shadows.

Nice video Gary. Very clear instructions. Also nice to bump into you at Derwentwater, I hope you got some great shots. After a while I've gotten used to using NDs to the point where I can ball park the exposure without resorting to apps. For a 10 stop for instance, easy to remember that 1/30s becomes 30s so you can work either side of that point - so for instance 1/15s = 60s.

DaveB - Hi Dave. Thanks for saying hi too 😁 Yep, I always tell people to remember 3 shutter speeds... 30 15 & 8. These are likely to be the only shutter speeds you’ll need to consider. See you out there again xx

You're right about people over engineering the process, the way some of these tutorials go on you'd think it was a black art - not the very simple process that it really is. Great vid.
