Nice, I was just pondering methyl anthranilate yesterday :) Your final product is the cleanest looking in all the videos I've seen.

Hypobromite must be a much cleaner than hypochlorite! I wanted to ask why it is you think it ended up darker after recrystallisation? Also before acidifying what temperature do you cook it back down to?

Are you sure that the fumes are NH4Cl? There is no ammonia used in those steps. I have the same issue and also the feeling this could be hydrazine hydrochloride from contaminated phthalimide

How hard would it be to make phthalic acid from PETE plastic bottles? To make the phthalmide from.. (yes I've seen the Nile red vynal gloves extraction)

Hello Sir, thank you very much for this video I learned a lot from you :) but I still have a question, if I would like to use activated charcoal to discolor the solution how would this work? Should it just be added to the solution that is put in the refrigerator? and if yes. how many grams of charcoal per ml of solution? thank you for sharing your Knowledge warm Regards

That should work maybe also try ethanol recrystallisation

Would _nearly_ glacial AcOH be sufficient? Eg: 98% or so? Since theres already some water in the reaction i would assume 98% AcOH would be ok as long as the quantity is adjusted to ensure the right amount - correct? *P.S.* great video! Thanks for uploading.

It seems that there is not a solid consensus or definition of what is considered 'concentrated HCl" What is considered concentrated? I would imagine it's not critical to most experiments if HCl is simply to lower ph. I'm just curious. I guess I wonder if 10M is concentrated enough. I would like to avoid the expense of ordering and hazard of purifying further.

@@vibzzlab Doug’s lab ran a ketene lamp for A anhydride on KZbin. I’m pretty sure that has been up there for 6 years! It is an incredibly dangerous route to AA. ketene is not friendly at all, although a relatively simple route to AA. If his has been up for 6 years I can’t see why your vid wouldn’t be okay 🙂. I have scoured literature and forums for an otc prep for a reasonable yielding anhydride synthesis and the best I came up with was the Sulphur chloride route although there are many others they are relatively low yielding and need other exotic Chems which defeats the purpose. I have a feeling if it were that simple to make people wouldn’t resort to ketene nor have 40 page threads discussing feasible routes… That being said I would love to be proved wrong!
