Despite being a thrash metal band... the difference between Anthrax and Metallica was like the contrast between Led Zeppelin and Kiss... Unlike 80's bands like Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost... Anthrax were not about horror, death, satan or other cryptic scenarios; they were fans of Kiss and wanted to have fun - their songs were often drawn lyrically from comic books and movies... Anthrax also had dark humor that came from influences like the Ramones, and were the firs band to experiment w/ rap and hip hop. Anthrax's classic line-up here was: Joe Belladonna (vocals), Charlie Benante (drums), Scott Ian (guitar), Frank Bello (bass) and Dan Spitz (lead guitar) from 1985 until 1992. Growing up in NYC, Scott Ian was a Jewish kid who got into heavy rock music and comic books in the 70's, listening to bands like Black Sabbath, Kiss, Ramones, etc. He picked up a guitar and formed Anthrax around 1981 w/ vocalist Neil Turbin and bassist Dan Lilker ... just as bands from Europe started to make waves in America. He got into newer bands like Judas Priest, Motorhead, Venom, Iron Maiden, Hellhammer, Accept, Anvil... and he wanted to play harder and faster metal... Drummer Charlie Benante joined later and lead guitarist Dan Spitz was also added to the band. They tried to get the attention of a local metal entrepreneurs Jon Zazula and his wife Marsha, who had started a metal label in 1983 called Megaforce Records and had signed both Metallica and Manowar that year. After much persistence, Anthrax finally won over the Zazulas and recorded their debut album 'Fistful of metal' in '83... it was released in early 1984, just after Metallica's debut "Kill 'em all"... Slayer's debut 'Show no mercy'... and Manowar's 2nd album 'Into glory ride'... But just as Anthrax was getting ready to tour for the album, vocalist Neil Turbin demanded that bassist Dan Lilker be fired... he was replaced by bassist Frank Bello, who was Charlie Benante's nephew and had worked as their roadie. However, Turbin's difficult personality led the band to fire the vocalist. While recording an EP 'Armed and Dangerous' for Megaforce, Anthrax decided to look for a new singer and came found vocalist Joe Belladonna, a native American from upstate New York who did not know anything about thrash metal; Belladonna was more into hard rock bands like Whitesnake and Journey... but his vocal range was impressive, so they released 'Armed & dangerous' w/ his vocals instead of Turbin's. Island Records signed Anthrax from Megaforce in 1985 and they began work on a 2nd album. Because Belladonna was new to Anthrax, it took a while for him to adjust to their brand of metal... Meanwhile, Scott Ian decided to fill his extra time by writing an album of punk-style metal and called the project S.O.D. (Stormtroopers of Death) ... In '85, they recorded the album 'Speak English or die' w/ Charlie Benante (drums), Dan Lilker (bass) and Billy Milano (vocals)... That record started a new sensation of 'crossover' bands which fused thrash and speed metal w/ punk rock. Anthrax's second album 'Spreading the disease' was released in 1985, and the band spent months touring w/ Metallica, as their record sales spiked in the trash metal scene... Their next album 'Among the living' (1987) became their first gold album in the US (half million copies sold)... They also released a rap single "I'm the man"... and it took off and sold over 1 million copies... Their 1988 album 'State of euphoria' went platinum (1 million copies sold) in the US, and Anthrax were playing huge venues going into 1989. However, a number of difficulties emerged w/ fame and a fire in their rehearsal space destroyed all their gear at the time... The next album 'Persistence of Time' (1990) was a dark and defiant record, which also went gold... Anthrax also made another rap single 'Bring the noise' w/ rap group Public Enemy in 1991 and did a tour w/ the group that year. They capped off a decade of Anthrax w/ a collection of unreleased Anthrax tracks titled "Attack of the killer b's". Going into 1992, Anthrax heard the new grunge rock that was taking over the 90's, and they decided to make a change... Joe Belladonna was fired and Armored Saint vocalist John Bush joined Anthrax for the next album 'Sound of white noise' in 1993, which went gold... By 1995, lead guitarist Dan Spitz was out of Anthrax... The band completed the album 'Stomp 442' in '95, but record sales for the band had dropped significantly. A record deal w/ Elektra Records (Metallica's label) went south and Anthrax went independent by 1997. They recorded and released the album 'Volume 8: The threat is real' in 1998 w/ Pantera's Dimebag Darrell contributing 2 lead solos in every Anthrax album... but it failed commercially after their new label abruptly shut down. Scott Ian resurrected the original S.O.D. in 1999 and released the 2nd album 'Bigger than the devil' and went on world tour into 2000. The next album "We've come for you all" was released in 2003, (Rob Caggiano was their new lead guitarist) but record sales were still not good. It would be John Bush's last studio album as Anthrax's vocalist. In 2005, Anthrax announced a reunion tour w/ Joe Belladonna (vocals) and Dan Spitz (lead guitar)... and it provided Anthrax w/ a boost in popularity... After some difficulties, Anthrax were finally able to record a new album and finally got Joe Belladonna (vocals) to come back back to Anthrax permanently - the album 'Worship music' was released in 2011 w/ lead guitarist Rob Caggiano. It went to the top 20 on the US charts and gave Anthrax their first commercial success in years... Rob Caggiano left Anthrax to join Danish rockers Volbeat... Jonathan Donais (lead guitar) soon joined Anthrax to record their 2016 album 'For all kings'...which was another successful record. 2022 had Anthrax touring for their 40th anniversary and hope to have a new album released soon.

I always loved Anthrax. I mean, they have a song about Judge Dredd (I Am the Law), which is almost enough on it's own for me, but they also have always had a particular energy to them that I don't think many other thrash bands do. Don't get me wrong, it's more of a side-grade thing, something that distinguishes them but doesn't make them "better", like maybe it's the healthy amount of speed metal in there? I dunno, it's some level of fun that's unique to them, and it's great.

The drummer for Anthrax, Charlie Benante, is going to play drums on the "revival" of Pantera that was recently announced. I'm still not quite sure how I feel about Pantera coming back without Dime and Vinnie, but since they tapped Charlie you know he is good. Zakk Wilde is playing guitar. You could check out Stillborn from Zakk's band Black Label Society. I'm not a huge fan of BLS, but the song Bridge To Cross is haunting and easily my favorite.
@palladinodessa8988
@palladinodessa8988 Жыл бұрын
I am hesitant too - the brothers band was Pantera - Rex and Phil are members also though, and I think in choosing Zakk and Charlie, they are choosing longtime friends and great players that want to do this to honor the Abbott brothers - not make a penny or further themselves. The tour should be seen more as a remembrance of the awesome influential band and the missing members (RIP) please recall correctly the times - Pantera stepped up and played their style with no apologies and no regrets and they helped form metal and save metal - all while being the unselfish regular guys they were that would rather party with fans for a day than load up a bus and move on to the next gig. For all the praise we put on the legends Dimebag and Vinnie - we must acknowledge the guys who helped them become the icons they are. Rex always laid down the solid foundation in rhythm needed and Phil is easily a god-tier frontman. Pantera deserves to be remembered and revered and passed onto a new generation.

That albums has some of the all time best riffs, they used to use them on headbangers ball for all of their intros. It was actually a side project after Anthrax had been out for a few years, they worked on it after they were done with Spreading the Disease. It reunited Scotty and Charlie with their former bassist Dan Lilker who their original singer had kicked out of the band…that singer was subsequently kicked out of Anthrax as well!

And on a side note they were in an episode of the classic 80s/90s sitcom Married With Children where they performed in the Bundy's living room and destroyed the house. But don't let that or this reaction video distract you from the fact that Al Bundy scored 4 touchdowns in a single game!

Anthrax is such a fun band, their energy is amazing and they have this "frenetic" sound in their music that really is just infectious. Back in the hey-day of thrash ('84-'85) Anthrax was tops in my list - duking it out with Slayer for the top spot, Megadeth and Metallica at 3 and 4. They just have a different sound to them that draws me in. Scott Ian always made me laugh - such a great set of guys. 🤘

No she deserves no appreciation. But she gets views just because she is a cute girl. The men than learned to play their instruments, and had the ideas of those songs deserve appreciation. All these reaction videos are getting views by capitalizing on the efforts of the bands. If a woman learns an instrument, and plays those songs in a KZbin video, then it is something, but her, it is nothing. 30 years ago a girl like her, with no talent , and with her (average) beauty, would be known only to her college and her neighborhood. Which is not bad at all, but now she can get fame on a disproportional order. We should treat such videos with just watching them, do not put any like, and do not write any comment at all.

What you've just saw and listen was part of one of THE ALL TIME BEST concerts EVER recorded , not only by ANTHRAX , but in our metal music genre in general. This is one hell-of-a-concert, hell of a show, hell of a musical performance, ANTHRAX in their very prime period. Awesome musicians, especially the drummer - Charlie Benante, among the best metal drummers of all time. This concert was filmed live in 1987 at Hammersmith Odeon concert hall (in London UK), as part of their "Among The Living" world tour, and was officially released back in the day under the name "Oidivnikufesin (N.F.V.)" originally on VHS video cassettes, and nowadays on DVD. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for everyone who is into metal genre and haven't seen it yet. Here's some link for the full gig -> kzbin.info/www/bejne/iV7QcpRnhNuohtU ENJOY IT !!!

This is a style of metal from the 1980s called Thrash. If you like this one, check out the others for sure but also check out the California Bay Area thrash bands, especially its kings, Metallica.

I love anthrax, I hate this song, but love that you loved it, which made me love it again!!! They're not like the other big 4 which is kind of the point..theyre all different.

Some other Anthrax videos you can see better how much energu there is in those old shows. People are stage diving (jumping from yhe stage to the crowd) and going absolutely nuts 😄.

Out of the big 4 thrash bands, this is who I gravitated to. To me it was fun and heavy which was more interesting than dark and heavy.

Image back in the day Anthrax was regarded as shocking. Even me as a metalhead since early 80's found them harsh and "too much" I was all about Maiden, Sabbath, Dio, Priest and Accept back then. You should btw check out Balls to the wall by Accept. The video in retrospect is very..funny?
