I'm half Native American myself (Cherokee), so I've always appreciated this song and it's lyrics. It's been said countless times on here, but this singer, Joey Belladonna is also Native American. So those lyrics were coming straight from the heart.

Anthrax's writing ability gets overlooked because of their punk-rock-party-thrash style, but when you focus on the lyrics, they are REALLY good at writing. Now, since you guys don't care for Joey on vocals, Anthrax did have a different singer starting in 1992 (John Bush) who sounded very different, and you would probably like him better, and the band too, because they took on an entirely different, more mature sound during that era. (I got the impression that you have heard "Bring the Noise" already, but if you haven't - you HAVE GOT to check that out.) A really good John Bush era song would be "Only" to start out with. You will probably be shocked by how different the band sounds.

Indians was written in 1987. The song with Public Enemy was released in 1991 but it was really a historic moment because it was the first time we really saw non mainstream metal and non mainstream rap come together. It really impacted generations of music. Next thing Ice T and Body Count took off. Rage blew up. Then later everything was rap metal and angry white teenage metal kids (like me) got into rap like Ice Cube, Dr Dre, and Snoop. I think people my age grew up in an epic time of music.

I've been a huge fan of this band since age 14 (when Among the Living was released, I'm 46 now)...the biggest of the B4 for me, at least at the time. One of the biggest attractions was the social message, coming off massive Dead Kennedys fandom as I was at then (and still now, check out Holiday in Cambodia for starters, please). Anyway, you've identified the punk influence, the open minded musical cross-pollination, and the inherent social conciousness that exists with these guys well. Love your work LiV, keep it rollin'.

Nail on the head. I think they can't appreciate anthrax until they delve a little more into OG punk rock, hardcore , etc. Where it's more about the energy , raw sounds and the spirit. Just like early hip hop. Bad brains and killing joke boys ain't a bad starting point.

Love that you reviewed this one. "Indians" was the first Anthrax song I'd ever heard..I even remember when it happend and what i was doing at the time. Such a great song from a great band that really has a history of contrasting the aggressive nature of the music (unappealing to some, I might add) with a lyrics that really make you think. I've always loved this song and it's still as relevant today (Standing Rock, anyone?) as it was in 1987 when it came out. Well done, guys!

When I heard that song, it was the day that Anthrax died a little for me. The start of the opening track off The Sound of White Noise, Potters' Field got me pumped. Heavy, fast, loud and then Bush opened his mouth and it all turned to shit. Bush is a great singer if you're into Journey or that time of band that requires a singer like him but metal requires the imperfect to be perfect.

Great reaction, guys! And to answer George's question about whether the fans actually took these lyrics to heart, I can answer with an emphatic YES. I grew up on this music in the 80s and can say with certainty that the social commentary in metal music helped shape my thinking and made me who I am - which is someone with deep empathy and compassion for those suffering oppression in this world. Songs like Indians, Disposable Heroes (Metallica), Revelation Mother Earth (Ozzy), Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Maiden) and Run to the Hills (Maiden) taught me so much about injustice. After hearing Indians I went on to read books about the TRUTH of Native American history (not the bs they taught in school). I ended up becoming an activist and remain very involved in social justice issues. I thank metal music for helping to open my eyes.

Thanks Mauricio. I'm more of an armchair activist these days but back in the 90s and 00s I did my fair share of civil disobedience and other forms of protest. You're so right, it's not easy because you take on a lot of suffering when you allow others' problems into your psyche. But the only alternative is to do nothing and that's just not happening. Antony, be careful what you wish for. You never know when you might need a warrior to fight on your behalf.

Stefan S The whole album is incredible but I doubt they will listen to the whole thing in one video. I'd suggest that they listen to the title track because I'm sure Ryan would love the transitions haha. Also imo the title track is the most musically diverse song on the album and will be the most intriguing for them to hear, other than Call of Ktulu or Fade to Black. With that being said... if they were to react to an instrumental I would prefer them to check out Orion before Ktulu

Kreator- Violent Revolution. They HAVE to do Kreator at some point. They'd hate their old stuff, but they still had awesome stuff after the 90's and Violent Revolution is one of their best modern songs.

Nick P If they did something "newer" I'd choose Hordes of Chaos for them. Also, I don't really listen to their experimental albums of the 90's, except for one song. They would like Phobia, who doesn't?
@nickp3949
@nickp3949 6 жыл бұрын
Some of their 90's stuff is actually pretty good, it's just not really thrash. But I think they had a better 90's period than most thrash bands, not as good as Megadeth's 90s (because of Countdown and Youthanasia), but still good. Yeah Phobia is great, Stronger Than Before, Celestial Deliverance, Renewal, The Golden Age, they had some good stuff. But the albums as a whole are kinda "meh".
