In this video DidYouKnowGaming takes a look at anti-piracy measures in several Nintendo 64 titles, such as Banjo-Tooie, Donkey Kong 64, and the N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Special thanks to all the data miners and curious individuals who researched these anti-piracy measures on TCRF and beyond, including Jrra, Ferrox, and RyanDwyer.

They really went crazy with Banjo-Kazooie. Remember Grunty's Code Vengeance where if you input too many illegal cheats then your save data gets wiped? What was the point of even adding in a cheat system if your going to punish the players that badly for using something the developers made?

@@hentaidude666 i mean this was 1998 we're talking about here. While the internet was around you didn't have things like KZbin or well known gaming websites. You either had gaming magazines that had the codes or had to go by word of mouth with your friends who also owned the game. Sometimes you even went with trial and error and write down your codes on a torn piece of paper and keep it with the game in it's box for sake keeping. For us who were young at the time if we played a game, inputted a few cheat codes and were told "hey do that one more time and all your save data gets wiped" you either had the cautious ones and stopped or the ones who didn't believe and did it anyways only to come back and find everything is now gone as it said it would happen. The developers might have found it "funny" in punishing someone for playing a single player game but it's really not.

I feel like the channel is doing really well considering the downturn in interest in gaming trivia videos. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm not so into the scene as much anymore, but I feel like when I was 14 (when I first found gaming trivia and started learning cool facts and stuff) there was so much to learn and talk about. But now it feels like everythings been talked about. And it's hard to talk about new things. But y'all have really stepped up to a scene that's losing speed, and have continued to keep putting out interesting facts and trivia. I like the channel, while others have lost me over time. Well if you want Feedback: I've really enjoyed this modern era of DYKG, you guys have been doing a great job at objectively & accurately conveying information without sounding like you're reading off of a Wikipedia article, and I've particularly enjoyed the episodes you've narrated. I think the only Episode's I haven't enjoyed were "Super Smash Bros Mistakes" (Which ironically had some mistakes of it's own) and "Nintendo's Game & Watch" (Again, due to some errors in that episode that, being an avid Game & Watch Enthusiast, put me off), aside from those episodes though I've really enjoyed pretty much everything you guys have been putting out, even videos about games or topics that I haven't played or have interest in, and you've even surprised me with tons of new info I was unaware of! You know, this episode makes me wonder if the copy of Shrek 2 for the Gamecube I owned as a kid was pirated... When I was a kid, I didn't like salmon, so my mom said she'd buy me a copy of Shrek 2 for Gamecube if I ate salmon at my Granny and Grandpa's house. I ate it and the next day we got a used copy from EB Games. The reason I think it might have been pirated is there's this outer-castle stage where once I reached a certain point where you were supposed to enter the castle, the game wouldn't allow me to progress. I couldn't restart the chapter, I couldn't switch teammates to make it through. Reading gaming magazines, I'm apparently the only person who had this issue.

Would love to see a video on Before Crisis Final Fantasy VII. If you dig around on the internet you can find a lot of interesting details about that game as well as the progress of it.

I got a copy of Banjo Tooie that periodically deletes one of my savefiles. I had always assumed the previous owner had done some sort of hacking that triggered this as a defense measure. I was still able to beat the game by continuously copying to other savefiles as backup, but it was a constant threat that the next time I'd boot it up, the file I'd been using could be gone before I had a chance to copy it.

It’s interesting because it’s anti piracy, but since it has such a unique turn on the games, it almost makes you want to pirate the game

Wow! So, Rare, had the incredibly tough anti-piracy measures, when they were the first to break Nintendo's own NES anti-piracy measures, to make their own games? They'd impressed Nintendo so much that they became one of the first 3rd party publishers for the NES.

7:11 It´s interesting cause 10 years ago i actually experienced that Movement Technic when i played "Jet Force Gemini" on N64 Emulator named "Surreal64" on an mod chipped original Xbox. But i don´t know, maybe i didn´t configured the controller correctly and that was the reason my Character walked so slowly or the Emulator didn´t understood the Anti-Piracy.

They could have just called this video "Rare's Anti-Piracy measurements", but then they wouldn't have been able to put Zelda onto the thumbnail, and I have the feeling that was really the only reason.
