Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panamá, Costa, Rica, Honduras, El Salvador. These are all incredibly beautiful, visually stunning, places that are so replete with vibrant culture, delicious food, and majestic architecture. It absolutely infuriates me how the media portrays these countries as havens for drug dealers and street gangs. These are vile, racist stereotypes that are perpetrated by Western media. It would greatly behoove them to explore these countries in much depth. I always greatly enjoy your videos.

In some way is true but also we can not ignore the real problem that is violence of Gangs in big urban areas, about all that what you describe , i think some have this and some that , in the Honduras case the violence is a Serious problem , and has to offer Bay islands and copan , , El Salvador has also the Pacific beaches , , Nicaragua has Leon [ a colonial city ] and again some pacific coast , , and then we have Costa Rica with Nature in pacific coast , Volcanoes like Irazu , the Rain Forest and Limon in the Caribean Coast , and Guatemala with Rain Forest , Highlands , Pacific Coast [ el Paredon , Iztapa,Oceana , Monterrico Natural Reserve , Las Lisas } , Lakes Like Atitlan ,Peten Itza , IZABAL , and the Caribean coast and cultural Garifuna Town of Livingstone , Precolumbian Heaven like Tikal , Mirador, Quirigua, Takalik Abaj [Olmec -Maya], and the most Beautyful Colonial spanish time City of Antigua , and dont forget Guatemala City , at the end many Tourists go for the GUATEMALA -COSTA RICA , OR VISCEVERSA]. BUT YES EVERY cOUNTRY HAS ITS OWN ENCHANTMENT .

I've watched almost all of your Guatemala videos these past couple of days, someone posted the one in which you went to the central market on Guatemala's subreddit. I really like your story telling and how you have portrayed the country in a very fair way, without hiding the rough spots but also highlighting many of the things that can make someone fall in love with the place. I am born and raised in Guatemala City so your videos felt like a very close portrayal of living there, bouncing between different zones, going from something fancy in Zona 10 to something more traditional in other places and sometimes turning the corner and finding you in a completely different kind of place you were just a few blocks away.

Hahaha, funny and interesting story about the "spoon" however, I know you understand the guy calling you might have been the person in charge of kitchen utensils and if he can't find the spoon he has to pay for that, I don't know but, might be the answer behind that issue. Hope you are having a great time in Antigua and Guatemala in general. Thank you again for the beautiful video and hope you come back soon. Blessings.

Thank you for shedding more light on "Fair Trade" - I remember you said you had something in the works about it when I asked a couple of months ago. Is there a way to be reasonably sure that the coffee we buy in the US or Canada is really helping the farmers in a "fair" way?? I remember when I started a tour in Antigua in 2019, I arrived in the evening, and by the time the driver got through the incredible traffic in Guatemala City, it was dark when I arrived in Antigua. Next morning, I went up to the rooftop breakfast area and my jaw just dropped to see the beauty of the town and the surrounding mountains and volcanos (one of which was belching smoke!). My Intrepid tour of Central America in April will start in Antigua, so it will be nice to visit again, even if only for a day.

It's an important question and one I don't have a satisfying answer to. All I could learn from Fernando on that note was that you want a cafe that has a short supply chain, so it's closer to buying direct. But I'm not sure how realistic it is to ask every coffee shop I go to about their supply chain lol. I just hope that with a bit more attention on the problems of "fair trade" we can move to a more transparent system

Why did he wait so long to return the spoon? Why didn't he just mail it back since he obviously didn't want to pay for the set. It's funny that the one spoon isn't very valuable to him. Though it was too valuable for him to by a set...

Exactly! Honestly sometimes gringos seem too entitled when visiting 3th world countries. He accidentally stole the effing spoon, he is in the wrong, why be petty about it? Just because a spoon is insignificant to a 1th world country person it doesn't mean that the object will be as "insignificant" in the rest of the world. Some gringos are just clueless

Let’s better understand the story of the spoon. People that work at those places are responsible for all utensils, upon conducting an inventory if anything is missing, guest what? they can either be accused of taking hotel property home or the spoon price could be deducted from their salaries. Either way, perception is not in their favor and by returning the spoon his name and character as an honest person is clean and clear.

Antigua is soooo overrated. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but really. I was raised in Guatemala City in a house with two patios, de los patrones y el del servicio, the churches near me, La Merced, Santo Domingo, Catedral, Candelaria, etc. have all the original paintings and sculptures that were brought over in the 1700's, not reproductions like in Antigua. The old city is so much more interesting than any other place south of Mexico City and north of Lima.

Hi Dan. Great video. I know you’re not currently in Guatemala so I’ll give you my honest opinion of Antigua. I was there almost exactly 2 years ago. Feb. 2020, just before Covid hit. I loved Guatemala City. It’s a very real place. Antigua struck me as artificial. It’s 100% geared towards tourism and such places rub me the wrong way. Yes, it’s beautiful. It’s also overpriced, overcrowded, and the restaurants automatically add their tips to the bill. There are people who like places like Antigua but I was there for only 3 days and that was enough for me. The story of the shoes made me laugh. I live in Mexico but I buy all my shoes when I visit the US because my size doesn’t exist in Mexico. P.S. I’m now a subscriber to The New Travel but I didn’t see my name floating next to your head. Hmmmm…….
@TheNewTravel2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha my bad Joseph, I'll be sure to update the names floating by my head before the next one 😂 And about Antigua + tourism... you know, I think it was probably more crowded pre-covid because I didn't find it overcrowded when we went. I agree with you that some of the restaurants there are a rip off. We had some great meals though :)
@josephpanzarella14172 жыл бұрын
@@TheNewTravel I'm sure the city is much less crowded since Covid. When I was there it was overflowing with the sort of people who wouldn't set foot in Guatemala City. ok. I'll look for my name next time. I subscribed because I really support what you do. 😉

I lived in Guatemala for a couple years and really didn't like Antigua the first few times I visited (same feeling about it being artificial). My feelings gradually changed as I began visiting with local friends and they took me to places that felt much more authentic and special. It took a lot of time to find those spots!
@alexsanti40982 жыл бұрын
The spoon story, has everything to do with the owner of the place, absolutely nothing to do with his/her employees. The owner clearly a penny pincher represents him/herself. The common people are hard working and honestly friendly. Just wish such tag "spoon story" will not be attached to the common people, it's unfair from all angles and totally undeserved, ask anyone who's stayed for more than a couple of weeks in the country. "The country of the eternal spring" (El Pais de la eterna primavera) has a lot to offer in kindness, hospitality, friendliness...
