Saludos 🇬🇹

Hey Dan. You definitely have the edge when it comes to Guatemala. I was only there once and only visited 2 cities. Liked Guatemala City a lot. Found Antigua (like Cartagena, Colombia) way too touristy. I've spent about 25 years telling people "Mexico is not the name of a beach" often to no avail. FYI I'm back in Mexico City, as of this morning, after 8 glorious weeks in Brazil. I think Brazil is my new love. ❤️

Critiquing this video as someone who was born and raised in Zona 1, Guatemala City, still has family there, has lived and worked in Mexico (CDMX), have family there and had lived and traveled all over the world (currently reside in Indonesia). 0:51 Similarities There are true similarities and superficial similarities. These images of churches in Puebla and Guate City are an example. To the non-casual observer, these two churches will actually stand out as different stemming from their location. Puebla was an important center from early on in the colonial period. That church is from nearly 400 years ago and reflects the common architectural style then. Guate City is Guatemala's fourth capital and only became an important center in the late 18th century. That church, the cathedral, reflects the style then. 1:06 The differences between northern Mexico and southern|central México predate the United States or the colonial period. The differences go back more than 500 years ago. Central and southern Mexico as well as Guatemala belong to the Mesoamerican cultural area where the north of Mexico did does not. 5:22 I get you. Guatemala City | Antigua weather is among the most pleasant in the world. Believe me, I've been around. Note, though, weather in Guatemala can also be quite hot and humid in places. Places in Mexico with that weather? Oaxaca, Cuernavaca. 6:51 Ladino Nope. "Ladino", not to be confused with the language of Sephardic Jews, is a corruption of the word 'Latino', as in speaking Spanish. Ergo, a Ladino in Guatemala is a negative, relative term for anyone who is not indigenous and speaks Spanish as a native tongue. So, you'd ask "Son ladinos?" And the response could be, "no, son indígenas". 7:34 Did you know that Guate has people of German descent, the descendants of 19th and early 20th century immigrants? My family is Ladino with Spanish surnames but a cousin of mine is married to a native Guatemalan whose surname is Hengstenberg. 8:27 Makes sense. Nothing to do with cultural similarities, but rather economics. Think economies of scale and how they benefit a behemoth like Mexico vs. tiny, less globalized Guatemala. 9:03 Think about global markets and the price that coffee can command when exported. Plus, Guatemala produces quality rather than quantity unlike, say, Vietnam where coffee is everywhere and very cheap. Finally, mis respetos a México. I will always have an attachment to Guatemala, but Mexico it's one of those places that once it gets under your skin, you will think about it and remember it for the rest of your life.

First of all, great video! And now, I’ve noticed some people think that comparing Mexico and Guatemala is unfair and insulting, and here is my point of view: If you compare Mexico and Guatemala in terms of infrastructure, size of economy, or amount of places to visit. It’s more than obvious that YES, the comparison is not fair because Mexico has a much larger population, so you will need more infrastructure due to the demand, as well, you will have more chances to have a larger economy; and since the Mexican territory is huge, obviously there will be more places to visit and more diversity. But in the case that you insist to compare both countries in those terms, then comparing Guatemala to any Mexican state might be fairer, since in the past, Guatemala was part of Mexico as an state for a brief period. However; if you compare both countries in terms of culture, history or architectonic style, NO, the comparison is not unfair at all because, in those terms, Guatemala and Mexico are similar (at least compared to the Mexican southeast region). First, both countries share the Mayan culture; second, from 1821 until 1823 Guatemala was a Mexican state during The First Mexican empire, so they do share history; third, due to the architectonic style in some cities and little colonial towns , you can have a similar feeling or experience. I mean both countries share borders, language, and both were Spanish colonies; so obviously, there is no country more similar to Mexico than Guatemala. These similarities don’t have to be something negative, because it means there is brotherhood between both countries and that’s positive. Having said all this, the video compares both countries in terms of culture and other facts related to it. SO THE COMPARISON IS NOT INSULTING NOR UNFAIR. This guy shares a respectful point of view about his positive experience, recognizing some similarities and differences between 🇬🇹 and 🇲🇽; and for that reason this is a great video!

NO, just no, they are very different countries, even comparing natives cultures, just very different, even in colonial times, Cental mexico was one of the epicenters of spanish american culture, the universities, economies, religius, country self identity, architecture in the past AND in the present, very different, in mexico you have MANY important colonial cities, with a very distinctive architecture, in mexico there were very important mining cities, where the most of the wealth of spanish empire comes, like zacatecas, guanajuato, taxco, and where the most of the silver money comes from along with bolivia. time

Mexico is a massive country in comparison there’s still millions of indigenous people and lots of towns that most Americans and Canadians never visit. Plus Mexico’s economy is much larger therefore it has the potential to be and to have all the things that an American has in a major city like Mexico City. Mexico’s geography is also very different because it’s such a large country. Higher and lower elevations make a huge difference. Mexico remains one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world from deserts🌵 to flat lands to tropical. I grew up here in Hawaii and I can assure you it gets really cold and snows on our higher elevations here and people think Hawaii is only tropical but even on our small island we have like 20 different micro climates. I’ve been searching but it seems like it no longer exists. I love Puerto Morelos or Puerto Escondido but they are so developed, you don’t have protected forest right at the coast like CR. You’d be surprised about Guatemala 🇬🇹 if you traveled everywhere in the country. Obviously Mexico being a bigger country and expanding more vertically has way more diversity in gastronomy and culture. However, I will dare to say that Guatemala is the most diverse country in Central America when it comes to food, culture, language, etc. You have yet to discover the garífuna people, their food and culture and many other Guatemalan foods. There’s Guatemalan foods that I haven’t even tried and have recently discovered Just in our tamales there’s already many versions. Each department has their regional dish and even drinks. Guatemala has a very rich culture and even though it’s a small country and generally the weather is spring like, it also has more than 360 microclimates and diversity in weather. We have really hot departments like Retalhuleu and also very cold departments like Coban. There’s departments that would be the equivalent to the northern Mexican states like Zacapa, Jalapa and other departments. The European culture in the oriental departments is more present than in the occidental ones. Let’s also remember that Guatemala is surrounded by 4 countries and two oceans which also makes us a point of commerce and diversity. German, Spanish, French, Italian, African and of course Indigenous (Native) and even Asian cultures like Korean have influenced what Guatemala is today. Guatemala is a whole world even though it’s not a big country. I invite you to keep coming to our country and discover more of it. There is many more things to see, many more cultures and many more foods to see. 🇬🇹

Guatemala is expensive because it's a much smaller place, it has smaller market competition, more monopolies, more imports on any non-agricultural goods (way less "made in Guatemala" vs "made in Mexico" goods. Tooth paste, soap, shampoo, cleaning products, etc. all are expensive). Also our currency is about 3X pricier than Mexico's. It's a bit like Canada vs US (smaller market than the US, more expensive than the US) Guatemala is definitely more indigenous. The people who identify as "Ladino" are quite frequently only culturally Hispanic, but might have one or both parents be indigenous, all 4 grandparents be indigenous, etc. (If you are raised speaking Spanish you are pretty much "Ladino"), so the actual percentage of indigenous people (background, culture, heritage) is much higher than 42% if taking everything into account. Coming from a Guatemalan, you definitely see more fair-skinned people when visiting Mexico, no matter the place. Also, I think you see more Asians in Guatemala than Mexico. Very few African-descent people in both countries. (Don't know Mexico, but less than 0.3 in Guatemala). There are more Asian people in the country vs Garifunas. Guatemala also has hot weather places, but the large majority of people live in the mountains (there's only about a dozen or so of small seaside towns, and no cities next to or near the ocean or in the jungle). Both countries share a lot of things, but it's a bit asymmetrical when it comes to how similar they are. The most similar country to Mexico might be Guatemala, but the most similar country to Guatemala is not Mexico (El Salvador is definitely the most similar, then Honduras and Nicaragua). Infrastructure is much better in Mexico because our government is simply worse and invests a lot less on it than Mexico's. Unfortunately we have the worst infrastructure in all of Central America.

I don’t know if you are from guatemala but the fair skin people in Mexico it depends where you go , East part of guatemala and morales there is a lot of fair skin people with blue eyes or green And Coban has some mixed German and indigenous and some who look white Most indigenous live in the north side of the country and border of Mexico Mexico City and other states has la larger population of indigenous ancestry than Guatemalan the difference is they longer keep thier culture they don’t speak the dialect they are more western they speak Spanish only they don’t consider themselves indigenous Mexico 🇲🇽 s larger than guatemala thier population is larger Maybe you are talking about the huipil traje típico that Mexico City no longer has thier tradition

This is one of your better videos Dan! I think you gave justice to both of these great countries. One thing you missed about Guatemala climate: they call it the eternal spring. As you said in the video the weather is perfect year round, especially in Guatemala City / Antigua / Lake Atitlan. I think you hit it on the head with Guatemala being more natural / traditional. Sure, you’ll find that in some places in Mexico, but the nature / traditional aspect dominates Guatemala. The size of Mexico makes it have more diversity of food, but no one will be disappointed by the rich culinary traditions in Guatemala, and there is no better coffee in the world than Guatemala. Damn it, let’s go back.

You are ok in some of the facts, but let me tell you, you havent been in all of Guatemala, Guate has 22 departments or states, my question to you is, have you been in all 22, or have you been just around the tourist ring?. Did you know it snows in Guate, the departments that usually have snow are. Huehuetenango and San Marcos. Have you visited those departments? Did you know we have a little desert too. Have you been in Jalapa. Zacapa, Chiquimula Jutiapa? Livinstone?. Every department has its own traditional food, culture, they have their own touristic places. So basically I would say, you have been in the central part of Guate, Guate, Antigua, lake Atitlan, Peten. That makes four departments only. You still need to discoves the other 18 departments. Cost of living out of the tourist ring is a lot cheaper also.

There is also some African descendants in some countries that blended their culture with the rest of their respective nations social fabric! Some nations are more prosperous than others in that region of the world, for instance mexico has the benefit of having as a neighbor the United States 🇺🇸 and that helps their economy in a great way specially with the remittances that millions of Mexicans send back to their villages. But also we have the free trade agreement between the United States Our neighbor to the north Canada and the Mexicans, that helps the Mexicans improve their quality of life, I have to admit Mexican food is one of my favorites though!
