Antique Belgian Waffle Maker Restoration - I'm Making Flemish Waffles for You!

In this video, I will restore an antique waffle maker forgotten by people and time. The waffle maker was extraordinarily rusty and quite tricky to restore. It Is over 100 years old and was made in Belgium. Many cultures, such as Polish, French, and Slovaks, used waffle machines, and Italians called it pizzelle or galettes instead of waffles. I love this object, and when I saw it for the first time, I knew it would make a great restoration video and deserve to be restored and preserved. It was bought at the flea market for 30$. After cleaning and seasoning the cast iron with canola oil, I'm satisfied with how it turned out. The restoration process went well, and I had the chance to experiment with new things, especially the waffles I made after an old traditional flemish recipe. They were delicious! Trust me! Do you like waffles?
It was like a trip back in time using this old waffle maker.

250g of flour
100g of sugar
100g of butter
1/2 cube of baker's yeast
3 tbsp of water

Well, I am Flemish, born in 1947. What you are making there are NOT waffles (wafels) but some kind of "galette". A waffle is rather thick, and very airy and light.

Yes, galettes! My parents bought a similar galette maker at an antique shop in Belgium in the mid 60's. My maternal grandmother was Belgian (Walloon not Flemish). We used it for many years to make our family christmas cookies. We now have an electric one.

This is a very beautiful iron and you did a great job bringing it back to life! I think the confusion regarding the recipe you used might be based in a classic case of 'lost in translation' as waf(f)el means different kinds of baked goods depending on region and recipe. So the iron you have would probably rather be used for wafels you'd call wafers in English, like stroopwafels or other thin and crispy ones. The fluffy wafel that your recipe probably was supposed to create, would be cooked in a deeper iron. Either way, the result still looked delicious!

In Germany we make thin round Waffles only at Advent and Christmas Time . They are named "Eiserkuchen" or " Hörnchen ". The "Hörnchen" looks like a Icecream cone. Filling with sweet cream they are very delicious.

I watched my step great grandma use an iron similar to this one to make a Norwegian delicacy that was like a sugar cone. It was very thin and funnel shaped when done to hold a heavy cream kinda like a thick whipped cream..

These are used to make gallet wafels its a special dough makes a thin waffle it used to be rolled up but in a thing on their back and sold in the streets it can even be seen in old paintings I happend to see a program about it

I loved it, too. Appreciated that it was not another knife, but another video game restoration, also. The waffle maker was so ornate. I never see anything like it. Did you find it at a flea market? So shallow, it was nice that it wasn't going to turn out so thick. I have never had a Flemish waffle. It looked very crispy and the chocolate was the perfect accompaniment.
