In 1958, my grandfather bought a new Lyman 23 inboard. White freeboard, red upholstery, nonskid decks, varnish wood everywhere and a tan Bimini top. He took us all over Biscayne Bay, Key Biscayne, Elliot’s Key, up the Miami River and around a Miami Beach. Boy, we’re we liv’n big. He also bought us Evinrude outboards for our plywood skiffs and told us how to take care of them. We lived on our family’s 1894 estate on Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove. It was so old we had a windmill, outhouse (ok, it was a turn of the century relic, we had indoor plumbing), Stables a hill that made pulling our 2 x 4 wood boat trailers down the hill and across to the sailing club boat lift easy. Grandma would let us use her Edsel to pull them back up the hill Sunday afternoon. One time when it was too windy to put my boat in, I put it in the pool. It was ok as long as I didn’t start the motor. My dad was shot down in the China Burma India theater in WWII. My other grandparents lived only a few blocks away and taught us all about gardening. I was lucky to have such wonderful grandparents. Sorry for ranting, boats seem to trigger my memories.

Our family had a 1956 Cruisers 16 foot wood boat with a 75 horse black and white Mercury outboard. We used to go on Canadian fishing trips every year. But around 2018 we lost the boat to dry rot. It was too far gone to try and restore

I have a $ 150,000 modern boat and I love it. But it’s not a Chris Craft I honestly want one so bad. The only boat in the works I would sell mine for is a Chris Craft.
