An old saying in Chinese “盛世藏古董,亂世買黃金"- Collect antiques in prosperous eras; Own gold in chaotic war times.

Another great video! Thank you Peter! You are right , the estimates from the Wang Xing Lou collection are too high. The owner was a former banker before became an antique dealer in HK. He’s more as an antique investor now than as a collector like most of us. I guess Christie’s must had a lot pressure for the estimates in order to win his business. Secondly, photos from some lots just look way better than the actual item. I was fortunate enough to spend four days for viewing pre auction exhibition, and had personally examined all 28 lots. 2 or 3 pieces are official kiln , but might be too aggressive to be marketed as imperial porcelains, judging by the density and purity of porcelain clay and by quality of glaze. Regarding to lot 2900, I think the Zitan throne did fetch its fair price due to its condition. It is quite worn out in seating area did discourage collectors including several serious furniture collector friends I know. It’s so true like you always say, it sometimes could be quite different if one can look at an item in person. Looking forward to your next Friday’s video. Maybe we will be lucky enough to get a bonus video like this one :) You are right. Only market is good at determining its value/price not the estimate.
Nowadays the lower estimate is the reserve price. This year Sotheby’s at New York had a Yuan-early Ming period large bronze lion incense burner, with a lower estimate at $100 K. The highest absentee bid was $98 K. Although it was so close to the lower estimate, the lot was still passed

Hi Peter, people were probably a bit uneasy from Apr to May when China was in strict lockdown for covid. The entire city of Shanghai did not sell a single car in Apr ! Not a surprise the antique market went a bit soft at the same time in Hong Kong, which suffered its worst covid outbreak only a few weeks prior. Hopefully things will get better as China is loosening up the restrictions..
