Nice Project !! You need to do an update on your office space. I work in IT and we do a lot of diagraming on "whiteboards", But the best whiteboard is actually not a whiteboard but a large piece of glass on a white wall or one side sandblasted. Use the shiny surface for the dry erase. Take digital pictures of your whiteboard concepts and make a scrap book. One of the things I loved from your Dad's salvage dawg shows was his sketching out his ideas before fabrication and then the commentary on why the pieces he chose. Follow more of his style and with your craftiness you will get this channel to 100K subscribers in no time

My wife doesn't understand why I hate working with wood instead of metal. You clearly exemplified all of the nuances of wood suckdom. I will direct her to this video the next time she tries to coax me into a project by telling me how "easy" working with wood is. Thanks.

Great work! Looks like such a fun place to work. I think the shrinking problem was due to the use of the impact gun sucking the washers into the wood and taking away your spacing.

Great Job! There are some great lessons in this build. Always remember plumb, level and square and as you said make the glass smaller than what you think. I try to strive for too much precision and it usually bites me in the butt. Most customers would never know if the clearance was 1/32 or 1/8, they look at the 30,000 foot view and see a great product.

Tay have you ever finished metal with clear shellac? If not, try it some day, I think you will be pleased. One of my favorite looks is simply wire brush rusty metal fittings and shellac over it. Poly is a plastic and it looks plastic. Shellac has a different look and is real durable

Instead of sanding the top of the cart to level it for glass I use different thicknesses of clear drawer bumpers. This also pads the glass so you don't get the rattle as well

I think as a final touch, running around the entire top with a 2 inch strip of "helicopter tape" would protect the glass from minor warp shock stress as it moves aeound, fill out any unevenness and still look great

I think i would have taken the corners off and squared up the pieces using glue, screws in between the bolt holes, and clamps. Then put the corners back on as decoration over the screw holes. You’d never see it and it would have been much easier to square and flatten the wood. Getting wood to square with 4 loose brackets is a little like spinning plates lol.

Cart really turned out nice Tay! I actually have one very similar waiting for its day in the sun. I passed on a pair of them at an auction a while back and have kicked myself ever since for not coming off the hundred bucks to take them home, which was really dumb. Wood isn't my medium of choice either, but I like a break from metal once in a while. You really hit it right with the look of the wood. Maybe you've already tried these on metal, but I like to bounce around between Penetrol, linseed oil, and beeswax. If I want a little darker color and penetration, I like to heat the metal before applying the finish, then buff it off with a soft towel. This is used quite a bit in the blacksmithing crowd to seal the metal from rusting. On an unrelated note...I was curious if you ever got the Ellis saw motor to run right after replacing the motor?

An application of 50/50 bleach or oxalic acid would likely have gotten rid of the grey. However, it would also have removed the brown from the wood, so you would have had to have added stain to get the brown back. If you ever decide to work with water stained wood again, one good strategy is to skip bleaching or oxalic acid and, instead, apply a light grey stain followed by a medium brown stain. I've really good luck with General Finishes & Black Dog Salvage clear coat (matt is my preference). If you want to get really fancy, use a General Finishes, umber glaze to really add some luster. I thoroughly did enjoy your frustration.

Coffee tables with glass tops are examples of terrible ideas. Every person I have ever met uses their coffee table as a makeshift desk so they can do paperwork or hobby projects in the living room while watching TV. Glass tops are too delicate for that. I made a coffee table with the assumption that I would be doing work on it. It has a five inch apron on three sides that I can fix claps to and the fourth has a built in bench vice. I can sit on the floor and it is perfect height for desk work, laptop, pen and paper, exacto knife and strait edge cutting etc. I acknowledge that this factory cart coffee table LOOKS good. I just think too few people are honest about what they do with their coffee tables.
