The threaded handle spindles can still be had at some lock shops, especially the older ones.

Fantastic video. I wish I had the skill (and tools). At least I can watch. Four slots for the set screws is better because the two handles can be tightened down on the door "just right", where they don't bind on the door and also don't have a lot of play. They also allow the resident to do that from a convenient angle, so if (s)he is older and less agile and finds it hard to turn the set screw from beneath the handle, a quarter-turn away from its ideal position puts it above the handle. They also give you four times the lifetime on the shaft as the slots get chewed up so quickly.

That old shaft was definitely chewed up! This is the second video of yours I have seen with no meowing! "Meow" to your cat. Thanks.

Interestingly, there are three meows in that one, but they're subtle and I missed them in editing, so no Sprocket cameos.

Neat. I’d always wondered how pieces like that were made. I’m finding all your videos extremely educational from a home DIY perspective, though I don’t think I’ll be moving past woodworking.... though as I type that, maybe the missus’s knitting machines might need me to turn my hand to these arts eventually. Thread turning part of this video sounded very Sprockety.

Thanks Michael! Yes, Sprocket was quite active during that part. :D

Great project video, really enjoying this. Just a small observation regarding the indexing block where you machine the 4 flats. By the adoption of the backstop in your setup, this is a good representation of restraining a component using the 6 degrees of freedom approach. The base of the vice could be classed as the primary datum, the back face as the secondary and the backstop itself as the tertiary datum. Apologies for being pedantic about this, but I have recently been on a metrology course and find datums and their relationship to workpiece holding quite interesting.

Can I ask a dumb question? At 4:00 when you located center on the part for slotting it, you used the edge-finder on the threads. Would it have been inaccurate to have used the vise jaws instead to locate center indirectly? (Mostly I'm wondering about edgefinder error on the threaded portion vs whatever the dimensional precision of the jaws is, and whether it's ever a worthwhile approach.)
@Blondihacks5 жыл бұрын
Christopher Tate That’s an excellent question! You’re right that it’s not as precise as edge-finding a machined surface. However the error is the same on both sides, and is cancelled out because I’m using the Half function on the DRO to find the center line of the part.

Kitty has been quite vocal during these videos! I'm sure in cat-tongue it's very educational and relevant to the project at hand! Small question -- on the replacement shaft that you've made, I notice the channels for the screws only go back halfway, as opposed to all the way on the original piece. Was that just superfluous on the original piece like the two extra channels were? Great video as always!
@Blondihacks5 жыл бұрын
TheQuietForte Good question! Yes, the long grooves are superfluous. The unthreaded part slides into the lock. The handle threads on, then the set screws go through the handle into those grooves. So the grooves secure the set screws and keep the handle from spinning on the threads.
