Antique rusty lighter - Restoration project

5 жыл бұрын

Today I'll be restoring this rusty antique lighter. It has been damaged badly by the rust and is in urgent need of restoration. The whole top side had rusted and the stone didn't even move when I begun. Luckily the lighter is made of thick plate and the rust had not gone trough. The cap didn't have much extra material left though. After removing the rust I found stamp saying FZ 522 and the bottom of the lighter says 522 too.
I tested a "real" rust remover this time. It's much less smelly than vinegar and works well. I think all the methods have their pros and cons but I'll definitely be using this in the future too.
After the rust was removed and the jammed stone was released I put the parts in lathe just because I have access to one and the pits were very deep. This I sanded the part up to 2000 grits and then used a dremel with wool polishing bit and polishing compound for mirror finish. As you can see in the end it ended up looking stunning. I might make an update on this after I toy with nickel plating some more. My current system is not great for brass (or in general) and the two metal parts could cause some problems too. Learning these things always take some time.
I also filed the "grip lines" back to the cap. Some of them had worn/corroded off and some came off while I sanded it. When sanding the I left the stamp completely alone, I only removed the rust from top of it. But I polished everything around it so it looks nice and reminds of the history.
I cut new gasket from rubber and cut a new spring from another really really long spring. I put in a new flint after a little adjusting with the spring it worked beautifully.

I think some people just have an affinity for that sort of thing and really enjoy it. I have an aversion to repetitious things and yet there's something I really get infatuated with when I'm sanding/restoring metal. Rather than repetitious, it becomes the opposite and you become hyper-aware of all the little details and shaping the thing.

I used to think that this kind of work was a hobby that dads got into to take a break from their shitty married life but I now see that I was so wrong. It takes more than the correct tools for the job. It takes knowledge of how to use the tools, a legit understanding of engineering, a wide array of tools, creativity, attention to detail, extreme care, a lot of time, patience, effort and love to properly restore old tools like these. It really is an art form.

Polishing tip - doing the felt wheel buff and polish while its spinning in the lathe will make a more even finish. Looks great! Especially envious of the hand work polishing the cap!
