Turning old rusty hammer into Mjolnir TOOL RESTORATION

I bought the rusty old hammer from a flea market. However it was unusable because the head handle was loose. I'm not sure how old it is or if it is antique. I decided to cast a new handle from aluminum and polish the head up. The hammer head had some rust and a lot of cement or plaster (I'm not sure of the correct word). I the makers mark as a bee or something similar, if you're interested. I wan'ted to make something more creative this time as I've not made such projects in a while so I though I'd make some sort of viking inspired design. My friend immediately called it Mjolnir. I think this one turned out super awsome!
I started the clean up by sinking the hammer head into vinegar. Vinegar removes rust but I figured since it's acid it should dissolve bases, which e.g. calcium. That worked fantastically. Then I sanded the surfaces flat trying not to damage the makers mark. I continued to polish it even further with some buffing wheels until I got that satisfying mirror shine.
I then shaped the handle from foam and covered put it in its place. I covered the mold with casting sand and made some air holes and a pouring funnel for the aluminum to make sure the pressure will be enough to force the aluminum all the way through. I had to do the casting during dark hours because that's all we get up north at this time of the year. It was also freezing temperature already but the video clip of the pour is probably one of the most calming clips I've ever filmed.
This was only my second casting project so i was very satisfied with the results. The top of the mold still didn't make the perfect shape, not sure why. Maybe the burn foam blocked my air holes or something. But the result was still quite fine so I didn't see it necessary to re-do it. Minor dent were left to the other side of the handle because I didn't want to sand it down much. I continued to do the same polishing process with the handle.
After The handle was polished I cut some buffalo hide to make wrapped handle. I used a string to pull the leather under itself to not have to use glue. The leather is quite thick which is necessary as the handle is metal and would be very rough on hands as is. The leather is pretty good at damping the vibrations, I've made my motorcycle handles is a similar way and they are quite good.
Once again thanks for watching! Please let me know your thought in the comment and leave like/dislike. That helps me make better content in the future. I you would like to see some more, go ahead and subscribe and turn on the notifications.

18 years ago I found a 16oz ball peen hammer head buried in my yard. It belonged to an old man who was like a father to me after my step dad died. I spent weeks polishing and restoring. Then made a hickory handle, checkered the grip area and inlaid it with darker woods. When i was finished with it, it was a tribute to the old man. Leaving it like it was would have been wrong. Since he never owned a rusty tool that i ever saw. But, it was too nice to use... Deciding I'd done the unthinkable by turning it into the only thing worse than leaving the rust on it... And turned it into a tool that was... unusable. Realizing my sin, when I opened my motorcycle shop I pout it in my toolbox. And started using it... While the nicks and dings the old man put in it are gone from the rust, the ones that are there now, hopefully, make the old man smile. Everyone who sees it picks it up, turns it and looks at all the detail and polish that's still left on it. Then, ask me something that starts with something like "Wow, where'd you find this?" I tell them the story about the old man i knew who could virtually fix absolutely anything... Being reminded of him every time i see it is a kind of nice feeling i can't really describe. It helps me find the strength I'm in need of at times... So, I'm supportive of polishing hammers I guess.

Nice chrome. Know a Company Guard once. He used only a spoon, he was able to chrome his whole shot gun. It was really beautiful. Using only a spoon mind you. Alas he got axed from his job. Yes. For starters, the leather was wrapped incorrectly for use. The overlap should have been going down the handle not up. AS it is, use will tug at the leather trying to pull it off, rather than tighten the leather with age and use. But nice vid and a beautiful hammer.

Why on Earth would ANYONE use an aluminium handle? Your arm would go numb before you got started in earnest. There's a reason we use wood and leather. I could be wrong, but something about 1200F metal being cast against steel seems like it would terrible for the steel.
@alphawolf0020
@alphawolf0020 5 жыл бұрын
Well, I don't imagine an aluminum handle is the best choice for a hammer anyway, but it all sure looks awesome. Probably softened the hammerhead a fair bit, but hammers can't be too hard anyway otherwise the steel will crack if it hits something too hard.

Your casting would have turned out better with less porosity, had you use water glass to bond the sand then rather the use of green mold, as there was a lot of vapors of steam coming out of the sand, You also could have improved the casting by preheating the mold considerably an then blowing the hollow out with air, an also using a bigger sprew at the other end where you had that small straw. Then you could have used brass rather then aluminum, an used a brown colored beer bottle as a flux to seal it from gasses while heating the brass. This would have given you a much stringer handle, an the use of water glass, also gets you away from the dampness with green mold. Another thing you could have done to improve the handle strength is to embed a steel rod in the center of the casting, but that requires a good preheat,

… First thing I need to say is: I LOVE this. Good job. Excellent work.. I especially like it when people can modify what they already have to accomplish something that really wasn’t that tool’s first intended use. My only “criticism” years there were some places that I really could have used some more captioning or narration because I wasn’t sure what I was seeing-for instance, a lot of that casting process went right over my head. … Also, am I mistaken in thinking that this entire process would have resulted in: 1.) a very highly polished steel hammer head resulting from the restoration of an old rusted one without any further information about mounting it on a handle; & 2.), Restored hammerhead was used as part of an assembly from which a mold was made to produce a second hammer that was cast as one piece with its handle all cast out of some unidentified metal? … Last thing in the “for what it’s worth“ category; I wish I could give you a set like the one I have that consists of a fairly stiff 5” disk-and-arbor that chucks into a drill that accommodates Velcro-backed polishing disks. The assortment of disks that came in this particular set, STARTED with 1500 grit, and then proceeded to 2400, 3400, 3800,4000, 6000, 8000, and finished at 12,000 grit. In case you’re wondering what 12,000 grit does, the most common use for something like this would be for a modeller to bring a clear plastic canopy for an airplane model to optical perfection. I discovered these many years ago when I ordered a set of little 3 x 3 pads from MicroMark simply out of curiosity. The first experiment I did with them was to sand the finish off my drum sticks that are made from very hard hickory, and hand-sanded them longitudinally (with the grain), with the whole set, then I mounted them on a sort of homemade lathe, spun them at about 500 RPM, and went through the complete set again across the grain. … Well, I don’t know about you, but I have never encountered wood that had been “polished“ with an abrasive with a grit anywhere near that fine. First off, at first glance, you would swear it had been finished with a clear lacquer or urethane high-gloss finish. … Seriously, I would have bet money; it was THAT shiny. Until you touched it. The feel under your fingertips of a very hard wood brought to that level of .. uh,.. “smoothness”? ... , DEFIES DESCRIPTION. I’m telling you, it’s downright sensual. Really, your eyes glaze over. … Since then, I have not played with a pair of sticks finished any other way. You do have to maintain it, because the usual grime will begin to accumulate faster than a stick that has the normal clear gloss or clear semi gloss finish.… But trust me, it is well worth it.… Most of the time a good bath in Murphy’s oil soap combined with hitting it again with the last two grits -the 8 and the 12,000 grit will put it right back where it was. … Sorry, I need to finish up I think I have tried it on all different kinds of things, but you should see what it does to steal… After you use the last grit, if you use the traditional felt pad polisher with a brown, white, and finally red jeweler’s rouge - bar, you can approach a true mirror finish completely free of even the tiniest scratch or swirl marks. … My next project will be to do what I just described to the slide from my TT33 Tokarev pistol and then re-blue it. If you made it all the way through to this; bless your heart, thank you, I am flattered, I hope it helps.

Sorry, I only skimmed your comment, however, he didn't cast a second hammer head. He cast the new hammer handle through the newly polished head. This supposedly sealed the handle in the restored head without further fastening needed. The finished hammer is no longer good for use as a hammer. It is only good as a trophy. It is a very nice trophy. The aluminum handle, I fear, would not hold up to continued use. I'm sure the hammer is not meant for use, now.

Nice hammer head but I think you'll find a lot of the dislikes will come through people not liking the cast handle. It's a very polarising subject (cast vs wood) and if you want to use the hammer in future, wood is always the way to go. I really dislike cast handles and wouldn't downvote for it, but there really is no substitute for a quality hardwood well made handle with a well hung (fitted correctly) head - whether it be an axe or a hammer. Nice work though. Thanks

The dislikes come from people expecting a restoration, as in the description, and finding a mirror-polished end result. Nicely done, but not a restoration.
