In this video, I show and discuss crazy prices for records at an antique store. Some of the biggest treasures in my collection came from antique stores. It appears to me those days are gone. The prices I saw for some nice but "not so rare" records were through the roof. Records that appear in this video are from bands/artists such as Van Halen, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Deep Purple, Queen, Boston Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Air Supply, The Police and more.
Just a reminder that you can still use code "Melinda10" to receive 10 percent off of your purchases from the GrooveWasher website. My experience at an antique show this summer was common records that looked like they had been dragged to the show down a gravel road priced $10-$20. Uneducated sellers must think these are the new Beanie Babies. I hope they enjoy keeping their overpriced records forever. 😀Great video, Melinda!

We used to sell antiques. Antique dealers generally have a few areas of expertise, but have an eye for things they can make money on as well. If Mrs Depression Glass is in a home buying glass, and sees a box of records, she may know nothing about records other than she can make some money on those. So she buys them. Some will mark them up, say 3x what they paid, and try to just turn them over and make their money. Some have the mindset that they can’t get “ripped off” so they start everything high, and after it sits, knock a little off, and then a little more until they sell it. Some are more stubborn than others, but that’s how it works. I was just talking to a guy who I knew from antique shows who was telling me he just bought a bunch of records and CDs. He’s an expert on tools and guns. He knows nothing about records, and assumes that every Beatles album is worth a mint. He will do the “start high and work down method”. And learn a little bit a long the way

Why is it a shame that people are trying to make money "make a buck" when a certain hobby is doing well? I never understood this argument. If you are referring to them trying to sell them way over what they're worth, then that's another thing.

I own a small used Record Store and this makes my blood boil !! If they want to kill our hobby off keep going. Records need to be affordable to attract young people to the joy of collecting, they see these prices that's it they stop looking and lose interest. I keep a ton of good clean Records in my shop for $5 to $10 and have no problem paying my bills and buying more inventory.

It’s not just antique stores. It’s amazing what people are paying for common records on many online/Facebook sites. As the owner of a small record shop, it’s so discouraging to see people pay twice the price or more than they should for records. It’s so frustrating to see so many getting ripped off, because they don’t know any better.

I luckily carted around my 125+ records from my youth throughout the years and moves, started getting back into vinyl slowly over the last decade I'm 53 disabled and Really wanted the RSD VH live right here right now. Had to pick from Amazon for $165 last week. Not too bad considering the other crazy prices online + I had to have! I'm a huge VH fan. Got all originals to 0U812, then CD came. Hello Melinda ! Excellent subject. When I got back into vinyl , around 2015/16 somewhere , a new/reissue 1Lp cost between $18-$23. A 2Lp went for $28-$35. Used records were $6-$15 , depending on rarity. Now : 1Lp = $22-$30 , 2Lp = $33-$55 and used records = $6-$20. So you can see we’ve had a slight increasement here too. (These are roughly numbers from Swedish Crowns to USD) Our ”problem” in Sweden , outside the big cities , are the scarcity of stores. However , the proprietors of the stores we have , are well into the business and use Discogs , Ebay and online stores to look stuff up for the customers to justify their prices. I swear no one feels cheated. In addition : I see how well they take care of and learn new collectors , young or old. That’s called business survival. Take care. /R (A at work)

Nice video. Like anything else, we must know prices in general when buying just about anything, including new and used records. A thrift shop where I bought a ton of albums over several years changed management and now prices are through the roof and so I walked away. Ditto for antique stores even in places we 'd expect to make good deals. It never hurts to bargain, the worst that can happen is a "no" answer.

Good stuff, Melinda! There’s a school of pricing that antique shops practice: put a ridiculously high price on every item and wait until hell freezes over for it to sell. Great Topic Melinda, really enjoy your content. I too think it's a shame that some sellers try to get such high prices for their vinyl. When I find better duplicates and resell my extra I'm happy to get medium to below medium value depending on pressing/condition. I'm always eager to help newer collectors expand their collection at fair prices. I guess if someone pulls the trigger on a $125 Zep album they must have a lot of extra cash to throw in the wind. For me, finding gems in the wild is so much of the fun. Like you, my best copies were often procured at various places at an exceptional value. I simply refuse to overpay. I spotted a Columbia House Disney compilation for $150 at an antique shop recently. I was absolutely gobsmacked - I thought, surely this must be some highly sought after cult favorite or something? So I looked it up on Discogs and found that NM copies go for like $5. And this copy was… well, let’s say it was an entire galaxy away from Near Mint. I’ve also seen the Superman soundtrack for $50 and an Easybeats compilation for $80, all at different booths within this same large antique mall. I think it’s just a lot of people who are completely out of touch with and uneducated on the vinyl market, so they all think they are super valuable rarities. They’re probably the same people who Mike has talked about before, who bring their copy of Thriller into The In Groove store thinking it’s worth $200.

It seems as though you may stumbled into that same shop, or perhaps all shops in/around Memphis have inflated prices. (?) Thankfully, living in Southern California with an abundance of record stores / swap meets, etc., I don't need Memphis stores for anything.

Brilliant video, being from the UK antique shops here are dreadful for records too. I've seen a Mono With The Beatles with a cigarette burn directly on Paul's eye having the asking price of £30 when really it should be in a bin. The issue is they don't know the importance of condition, they see a record and think it's valuable because of the artist. The only record shops I go to sell records based on condition and rarity, I don't mind a rarer record graded as Fair as where I buy records they grade harshly (plus I'm 24 and don't have all the funds in the world) and they still sound great but these antique stores are selling records that look to have been absolutely carved to pieces.

You are correct, antique stores and other vintage stores have jumped on the "Records are Back" bandwagon. I've had a few of these store owners buy from me when I have my $3-$5 record sales. I then see them priced at $10-$20 when they post them on the local FB market place or I stop in just to see what they marked them too. It's crazy but their crazy prices keep people coming to me to buy stuff here where I live. Thanks for the video and enjoy the music and the hobby.

People that shop antique stores generally have money and most of them are not record collectors but they will buy for their kids or nieces or nephews and they wouldn't know what a Japanese pressing is worth so the dealer makes out and let's us all not forget that the artists do NOT receive royalties from used records so that money goes straight to the dealer! I would imagine a lot of these antique shops are owned in chains like the old record stores so those cheap buys are history - Great video Melinda and I just LOVE the way you said "Zenyatta Mondatta"!❤

You are correct Melinda! Antique dealers have either lost their minds or are super greedy! I had to deal with that same thing with an antique store here in my hometown! I had to teach the owner about Discogs, and how to identify each pressing! Are used to go in there and get an arm full and sit in front of the cash register and go through all my Discogs and tell her what I would pay for it! It was never priced properly! Everything was always over priced! I think it would do most dealers good to know where to find the real numbers and what their stuff is valued and also condition issues! Great topic and video!

About 8 years ago, I found a very small town second hand shop that didn't specialize in records but they always kept a room full. They priced everything between .50 cents and $1. I racked up over half my collection from this magical spot. The Clash London Calling, hype sticker double vinyl sealed, $1. Rolling Stones Some Girls og, .50 cents. Countless 80's classics, 70's rock, Bowie, Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, etc, etc. The place closed a couple years ago, but I'm eternally grateful. These days I typically just order a new release on occasion to keep the collection fresh. But it's all getting overpriced for sure. Great video!

After he'd looked at the price online he offered it for £20. He said it was the 1st solo album. Wrong! He said it was from his personal collection, but it had never been played. Wrong! We have independent Stores, second hand stores, and Charity Stores here in the UK Independent Stores are all over the place price wise but generally very good! Second hand stores prices have gone up and the condition of the records can be in poor condition! Now Charity stores yes it's a good cause but the majority have upped their prices ridiculously Oxfam leading the way trying to get maximum profit! I say stick to independent stores! Just take care with second hand stores! And Charity stores if you are willing to pay up fair enough!! The glory days of record stores long gone!! Melida, you hit the nail on the head, as usual! I have seen this myself, and in lsgit records stores, although not so out of line. The Bowie "Diamond Dogs" with the genitalia currently(as of 9/3/23) for $4k to $4.5K. The story goes that the album covers were printed first, before the records were pressed, and were discarded. Should you find a copy with that original cover, it didn't leave the factory that way. Without the genitalia, it books for $10.-$15. All Steely Dan LP's currently book for $8.-$12. in stereo, quad versions book for $30. to $40. It does have one major hit on it. The original Van Halen U.S. albums generally book for $10. to $20., but there are a couple of special ones which book for up to $300. Queen "Hot Space" currently books for $8.to $12. Deep Purple's "Machine Head" is their quintessential album. It currently books for $15. to $25. I have an original U.S. copy in mint condition which I got when it first came out and probably paid $3. for it. I next bought the DVD-A multi-channel version when it came out for maybe $20. Then, when I was building my quadraphonic library, I paid $25. for my mint copy. This one books for $50 to $75. Most Boston original U.S. albums, including half-speed mastered, book for $10. to $20. Picture discs go for triple that. The LZ "Houses Of The Holy" U.S. versions are priced all over the map. A regular 1973 original pressing, mastered by Ludwig, books at $15. to $25. and if it has the paper band, books for $30.-$50. Other versions are through the roof. The copy to have is the re-issued one pressed by either Pallas of Germany or their U.S. partner Furnace Record Pressing. That antique store you visited is probably a consignment store. The owner of the records priced them, probably without knowledge of actual value, but has to share a portion of the sale price and is also paying rent space. Legit record stores are also raising their prices. The old rule of thumb was atleast half-price of book value and top price if they were sealed. Those days are gone. The other day I went into a Salvation Army thrift store, picked out a stack of LP's, some I already had and wanted a back-up. None were priced and when I took them up to the check-out stand, they wanted $3.99 each. I told them to keep them and walked out. I'm used to them being $1. each and probably would have handed them $20. and told them to keep the change, as it was for a worthy cause. They had a rather large collection of records, not even organized. It's no wonder that they were still there. Another independent 2nd hand store in town had bins of records. They had them priced at $5. or more and they weren't in the best condition. No sale!

Melinda my friend I have watched your videos you know that for since you came into the VC. This particular one is sadly the reality that's going on in these antique shops, and I have two different booths in two different stores. It angers me more than anybody, because he gives antique dealers a bad name. The antique dealers that are doing this know nothing about albums whatsoever, they just know they're selling for high prices. What they do is they look for the highest it's ever sold probably on eBay or whatever they don't realize it may have been a different pressing. In one store that I'm at all the dealers are very very fairprice. And the other store it's just me and one other guy that sells records, he prices his through the roof. I sell for $8 and $10 a piece. In that case I like the fact that he ever prices them...LoL. Great video

There was a record vendor at my local antique store that would price $12-15 records at like 30-40. And they weren’t even cleaned or graded. I’m not surprised that vendor is no longer at that shop. Saves me a stop on my weekly record hunt.

With prices like that, they can't last long. 😳 I hope they learned something from that. Thank you and take care.

I know you’re fired up over this, but I have to say that that thumbnail picture for this video is the cutest ever! Seriously though, if this was the pre internet days I would defend the antique store pricers on the grounds that not everyone can be an expert on everything, but nowadays that doesn't hold a lot of water. Just a few keystrokes can bring up the average prices on nearly any collectibles these days or at least point the way toward it. There is also access to folks who ARE experts and might be willing to help. With a store like the ones you are describing, I'm reminded of clueless eBay sellers who pay no attention at all to past sales figures for the items they are selling and see dollar signs over everything they have. It's sad and often infuriating at the same time.

Thank you for the compliment. 🤗♥️ I agree that there just isn't any excuse these days to not have a better idea about what something is worth. It was either laziness or just a hope that someone would think they are cool and buy them without doing the research. I hope they are still there. Lol. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

I live in an area with an unusual amount of antique stores and this is a phenomena that happened everywhere almost overnight. Shops and booths that never had records before suddenly popped up with crates of junk with outrageous prices. It won't last forever, since they'll realize fairly quickly that nobody is buying them.

And then usually what happens is that they get mad when they can’t get their “suckers” to pay their prices, and they take everything they have to a remote dumpster. This is fact, I’ve asked what happened to their records and they just angrily growl “we ain’t carrying ‘em anymore, no one buys ‘em”.😂

I hope that's the case. My fear is that people are buying them 😳 Thank you and take care.
