In reference to the comment you made it the end, as much as I put effort into acquiring my collections, the rare times I have a visitor who I can tell is attracted to an object more than I am, I invariably give it to them. I'm not trying to paint myself as super generous, I suspect my motives are selfish; a quite frankly makes me feel better seeing their enjoyment then I experienced finding it. I get very attached to things for the first few weeks, but after that, pretty much anything in my house I will give to somebody if it happens to speak to them. As much as I love the hunt to find special tools, those moments are much more special

I had a pretty fascinating experience this week. I met a blind man who had some very impressive alternate senses despite being blinded late in life. I happen to own a lot of metrology equipment and he was quite open so I had the opportunity to measure his sensitivity. Most humans can detect a thou with their finger and a few 10,000 s with the fingernail after a bit of practice. I have a surface plate and I happen to own some objects of particular flatness and squareness. I was absolutely dumbfounded! This guy was basically a living breathing hydrocollimator. He had no problem detecting a 10,000, he was able to locate quite a few microns as well only from touch. But what really blew me away was when I introduced him to the service plate. He ran his hands over the whole thing and even though I am very fussy about keeping it clean, he was able to identify the last three locations that I had inked! I have these two pieces of small plate that are very flat and flaked, I use them as a fence on the milling machine, they are the exact size of my tea slots. For those of you that have experienced rubbing together two precision ground flat stones are familiar with the very strange vibration that passes through your whole body. This man, rubbing two of the flattest objects I have ever owned against each other, he experienced this vibration and said that he felt an error. I was certain he was wrong, I'm very careful to keep these extremely clean. I checked them with a service gauge and sure enough, there was a small bit of crime that had clung to one of the stones. It measured less than half of a micron. This man was able to detect that in mere seconds. It would take me tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment and many hours of setup to detect the same thing. I'm trying to convince him to develop this skill and possibly offer his services to level or tram machines. That's another thing, I tested him against my collection of levels. I have some machinist levels that you have to wait 15 minutes to settle. He was guessing within 1/10 of a degree in a split second. I've always known that people develop new and powerful senses but this completely blew my mind. It sounds horrifying, but he's very interested in learning to be a machinist. There are just so many things he is able to do on his own, it's not my place to say no. But I was so impressed, I thought almost anybody could appreciate this story. I'm sorry it was a little bit long

They're hard to find, but you can find hand brushes that have bronze bristles. It's the best of both worlds. They are solid through, so they stay soft throughout life but do not break down nearly as fast as brass. I don't know why but I cannot find them for angle grinders, only manual brushes. But they are definitely worth the trouble. They also seem to use some type of adhesive that nothing loosens the bristles

Even the big tap handles with two handles almost always had the ability to remove one. I cannot be certain, but my theory is that this is for them to be used on the lathe. You would only need one handle resting against the way to prevent rotation. If you left the second handle on, it would likely interfere with the coolant or the light. Even the largest ones ever made always seemed to have one removable handle. If I'm wrong about the reason, please please correct me. This is something I have wondered about for many years

Those are some fairly old taps and dies. 10-28 fell by the wayside many years ago. I think those may be pre-WWII. I think I heard that after WWII the US and Canada got together and "standardized" thread pitch. Anything larger than a #10 would be referred to by a fractional size and typically two thread styles. Coarse and fine. So, with you having three #10's; I'm guessing 1930-40. Very nice set that you saved. Definitely worth keeping.

I focus a lot on tap and die sets and I have found the magic product for cleaning up the boxes is mild oxalic acid. You can dilute it and it functions as a cleaner and sort of reactivates the original finish. It's very quick and easy to get a very grimy box to still have patina, but be clean and presentable in very little time
@smithtown65892 жыл бұрын
Where do you get oxalic acid? I'd like to try it because I have some old tool sets in their wooden boxes and naturally, they're pretty dirty.
@jpsimon2062 жыл бұрын
@@smithtown6589 any hardware store will have it. It usually comes in a little tub sort of like a spackle. I think there are also liquid versions. I personally like the spackle style because you can dilute it with water so you can kind of customize how strong it is. They're both tap handles. The two v-blocks come together on the square shank of the tap. You usually needed three or four to cover the full range of sizes. In more recent years, taps come with five or six standardized sizes. Because most of the early tap wrenches were adjustable, the shank sizes were all over the place and usually represented the largest square possible out of that diameter

I think one of the more fascinating aspects of the story of airships is the role that New York City played. This is second-hand from history books, so taking with a grain of salt. During the time period that early airplanes and dirigibles we're in competition, city planners in New York had already taken a big bet on digibles winning the race. Theoretically that's why JFK and LaGuardia are located where they are. And still to this day we have so many skyscrapers that have a needle, a not inexpensive addition that was originally designed as an anchoring point for airships.

My neighbor was throwing it out because one of the plastic feet were missing. I have some Delrin rod coming which I am going to use on my lathe to remake the foot. I haven't gotten the Delrin yet and am making the assumption that it is a pretty hard plastic and would be ideal for this. Would I be correct, or is there some other type of plastic that would be better suited for this? Thanks and keep up the excellent work! - Eric

Some interesting facts I’ve learned from studying the Hindenburg disaster. The broadcast was not broadcast “live”…..it was recorded on 16 inch Presto discs and flown to Chicago and heard on WLS..NBC had a policy of not broadcasting “recordings” up until WW2, but it did broadcast excerpts of this recording and was the first time a recording was EVER broadcast NBC! After much research, they were able to tell exactly on the recording discs when the airship exploded as it made “digs” or indentions on the discs…

Thread Restore Kit: I have found a Thread Restore Kit to be a seldom used, but useful when needed tool. The Thread Restorers, unlike taps or dies, clean and repair threads - the restorer will not cut threads. There is nothing wrong with using a wire brush - the Thread Restorers just are another tool or option. McMaster-Carr Online Catalog: The McMaster catalog has a lot of useful information. For example, when checking on thread sizes, go to the tap section and one can see all (most) of the thread sizes - even the strange ones like 10-28. McMaster has useful information on items such as tubing, belts, etc. A very valuable reference.
