That "awl" looks like a "fid" a sailors tool used for back splicing lines. It is shoved between the braids of rope to make room to feed the ends back through. Sail makers also used them as well. Most were made from oak, but that could be used to splice steel cable.

That's a pretty cool tap & die set. It's not often that you see that style of tap holder that is coupled to the die handle. Been a few years since I've seen one. It's possible that the excess torque you could put on one led to it's scarcity. Very nice find!

Hi David! The problem with nickel plating is it has to be very thick to last... All tool manufacturers gave up on Nickel plating as soon as chrome plating became available. Nickel was always a softer finish that would fail very quickly. The only nickel plating that I ever saw done right was the headlight trim rings on model A Fords!!!!! =)

The wrench, screwdrivers and awl with those indented type grooves are really neat. The wooden case along with the unusual tap holder make that set a real gem! The square protrusion on the back of that wrench... I've got a Ford-branded auto wrench with the same thing on the bottom, instead of a screwdriver. Been trying to figure it out too. I wonder if the square is for pipe plugs. With PVC and PEX taking over the DIY plumbing market you don't find iron fittings much. Smaller pipe plugs had a square recess in them. Same thing for barrel bungs. That Dietz lamp is cool. Mom left me a Dietz railroad lantern. Very well made. Side note: I wonder if the lamps, blow torches, and lanterns we find with the bottoms rusted are from leaving them sitting on a concrete floor. Concrete wicks water up out of the ground and I have had to deal with a lot of piping and conduit rusting away at the point where it enters a floor. I don't know if this works with an I Phone, but it should if you have an adapter. My Android style Samsung came with an adapter to transfer data from my old phone to the new one. It is a micro USB with a Standard USB socket attached. I can plug a thumb drive into the adapter and download the pictures direct to the thumb drive. With a 32 GIG thumb drive you can store hours of video. The download to the thumb drive is almost instantanious. With that and a battery backup for the phone I recorded a all the pictures and video from 10 day trip to Atlantis in the Bahamas. Everything fits in one pocket too. Not exactly what I have but would do the same thing. www.amazon.com/Adapter-Compatible-SZYCD-Connection-Charging/dp/B07ZDCHK64 Great vid and cool stuff. Thanks.

Hi Dave! I was thinking the same thing about the Lug on the wrench... It doesn't look exactly square so it had me wondering... What a bummer about the tool meet footage, I enjoy those so much, I kind of feel like I'm there too. However this was just an outstanding video, the Dietz is a real nice lamp. I just got back from they thrift store myself and did quite good, I got a German folding knife, a punch from Sheffield England and a Stanley H114A mitre box, made in the USA! All for three bucks! On the rant, I got a new coworker this week, and he puts the dead fish in my hand, I tought of you straight away. LOL. On the hammers, have you got tips on getting the handle out and saving it. I got a hammer with a nice handle but it always comes of about half an inch (when hammering) so I think it's a good excuse to fix the thing up (handle needs some glue to) but after the loose half inch, I just can't get it any further.
