When I was growing up we hosted Canadian softball players in our home in Wellington NZ as my extended family were all either regional or national reps here in the 70s. I had pennants on my wall signed by Canadian national team players over many years. Though we also hosted US players, I always looked up to the Canadians more as a child. My first ever Denim Jacket was a gift from the Canadian national team. It had a large Maple leaf on the back. My friends at school were so jealous... I feel your struggle as a Canadian Jewish woman, my grandmother spent her teen years in a concentration camp and always said we weren't safe even in Canada which I thought was just her trauma from the war and now I see very clearly she was right. As I've also been followed and threatened and even when others are a witness to people screaming "dirty jew w****" at me nobody does or says anything and its very isolating right now to live here with so much antisemitism and hate. The irony is a lot of these protesters see themselves as freedom fighters like MLK when in reality they are contemporary brown shirts. The brown shirts also thought they were doing the morally right thing at the time while enjoying the power they felt by banding together to bully and intimidate Jews. I watched a video of some of these “pro Palestine”protesters screaming about “a zionist” before a pack of like 20 of them encircled him. The saddest part is they looked happy and like they were having fun and were relishing in the power they felt over someone else. If you look closely at a lot of the protesters they look like lonely, unattractive people who probably have never felt powerful or had the opportunity to bully someone before. Just a tragedy that the adults in the room let it happen. Sad sad sad.

When I lived in Southern California, I had non-Jewish friends who used the term "to Jew you down" to me or in front of me, and didn't realize that it was offensive. When I was debating with my boss over work hours paid, he said "Aw I'm not gonna Jew you out of ½ hour of work". I yelled at him for several minutes until he finally asked, "Hey! What did I say??" I told him, and he said he didn't at all mean anything offensive by it (which I believe him). Another friend caught himself saying it and said, "Sorry. It's just a figure of speech". I forgave all my friends, because (unfortunately) it actually _is_ a figure of speech, and the speaker usually doesn't mean to offend Jews. It's like saying "You're an Indian giver!" or "You gypped me!" (The word "gyp" is said to come from "Egyptian".)
