Title is wrong, it’s not a rival gang, it’s just the same cartel who hired Anton to get the money back. That’s why he has the discussion about why they gave a second tracker and says “no, you pick the one right tool for the job”, because they also hired other people to go after the money in addition Anton.

Some of you probably already know this, and others may not. But a few scenes before this Anton is in one of the rooms. He's doing what normal people would consider very weird things. Squeezing the wall, swinging the door open, and cutting on the light very quickly. But that scene truly shows what kind of man Anton is. Because he isn't just doing weird stuff. He's learning all he needs to know about the room layout, to execute the men as quickly and efficiently as possible. In a situation like that your environment can be just as deadly as the guy shooting back.

1:35 there's a distinct reason why Chigurh shoots the wall here; in an earlier scene he requests an identical room to room 138 (at which this shooting takes place), and while inspecting it he makes sure he knows where the light switch is (that's why he puts on the lights so fast as he bursts through the door), but there is also something else that people might have missed - he actually goes to the identical wall piece and knocks and presses it several times with his finger tips (this is very subtle, as he is in the corner of the screen) He does all this to make sure that, first of all, this very wall is a potential hiding spot for a gangster, and second of all, he makes sure the wall is thin enough for his shotgun to blast through (hence the knocking and pressing) It's these very fine details that prove this movie is masterfully done, but also great way to emphasize how dangerous Chigurh really is, he is extremely calculating and environmentally aware. He predicts what is going to happen and how things are going to happen... and someone who can tell the future is almost impossible to kill. Of course, he too is flawed, like the rest of the Old Men. He trusts the outside signals too much, thinking they really have a say in how the world is going to be (the heads and tails of coins, even traffic lights), the green traffic light nearly costs him his life, and proves he too, along with the old simpler time sheriff and classical lone hero (Moss) is unfit for the new world.

Fun fact, Anton does not like blood. Multiple times in the movie you see him either clean blood off or avoid it completely. The whole point of that is to give the more astute viewers the answer to whether he killed the wife at the end. Anton is more terrifying in the film than in the Book. In the book, he talks a little too much for my taste and Lewelyn actually captures him in the hotel room vs what they show in the film. True, but up to the point where he lets Chigurh go in the book Moss has been conflicted with the fact he might have to kill someone - he also isn't aware of who Chigurh is by then and just assumes he's yet another guy after the money, so he lets him go without realizing the inevitable consequences of doing so

Fun fact: the sound effect for the 'door-breaker' piston and the suppressed shot-gun were swapped in production! The sound design team thought that the solid 'thump' of the shot-gun worked better for the piston. The piston sound has a slight sliding/moving air sound that seemed better for the gun. BTW, suppressed shot-guns are a real thing, but require lots of maintenance and are picky about their ammo.

No Country for Old Men single handily shattered my perception of what an exciting, and awesome movie could be. I first saw this film when I was 12 years old in 2011, once my dad had deemed I was mature enough to watch it. As a child prior to viewing this film, I thought movies like Spider-Man were thrilling and exhilarating. Any movie that I had perceived as being exciting before I watched No Country for Old Men became a mere afterthought after I experienced what it had to offer in terms of sheer intensity, combined with quality storytelling. I was completely blown away. Until that point I had never been truly immersed into a film before, let alone one of the most most suspenseful thrillers ever. Looking back on it years later, this movie made me understand that realistic films that depict what humans in the real world are capable of just makes for the most gripping cinema imaginable. It conveys a darker side of humanity, and how a persons life experiences and circumstance can shape them into something opposite of a normal human. After I saw this film I asked my father if people like Anton Chigurh really existed, to which he replied “Yes, hitmen like that exist all over the world”. This movie seamlessly takes a very real scenario, and mixes it with truly brilliant acting and fluent screenplay to give the audience an accurate view of how ruthless, elusive and, precise the most effective hitmen in the world can be. I wasn’t interested in superhero movies anymore after this film. It gave me a new perspective on what great storytelling is, and made me more interested in the production of movies as an art, as opposed to a conventional Hollywood blockbuster.

@@northaurora1 That might true too, just a simple movie mistake. But there's actually a lot more behind him turning on the switch; he can do it so fast, after he rams through the door, precisely because he is extremely calculating, making him the perfect killing machine. Remember the earlier scene where he gets a room at that motel? He gets a room identical to room 138, and while making himself at home, he inspects not only the level at which the light switch is, but also other points like the small wall at 1:35 which he shoots, in the earlier scene you can actually see him knocking and pressing the identical wall with his finger tips - he does this to know that there's a potential hiding place there, but also that the wall is thin enough for his shotgun to blast through (hence the pressing and tapping). Chigurh uses every possible clue to become environmentally aware and gain foresight into the future, the exact reason why he is almost impossible to kill. The movie wants to emphasize how Chigurh is always one step ahead of his foes, that's why they made him switch the light so fast and well, a mistake was most likely made
