Hey Anton thanks for these videos. I have been kitting for 6 months now almost every day I can do a whole bunch of tricks but I never paid to much attention on safety till recently when one of my budies got into some serious trouble. I ended up watching your video and as fates may have it last week after an 8 meter jump I landed hard and immediately went into death loop in 25 knots with my slingshot 9. I say in all confidence that I would not have known what to do if I didn't stumble across your video. I just grabbed the furthest line/ handlebar and pulled it in this slowed me down to untangle my bar and I was good to go. Thanks Budi

Fantastic video! I always try to lean techniques that I would need in dangerous situations, even if I never encounter them. This is incredibly valuable knowledge. Another very good technique is how to handle a kite inversion while on the water. There is a way!

Thanks for sharing and proving this amazing knoledge. As a begginner kiter, I had never been warned of this situations and couldn't imagine it beeing possible. I was remaining naive with the "in case of any poblem, juste relase the kite". I feel like I'm a better kiter now. I'm gonna practice that as soon as possible. Thanks again.

Hey man this is GREATLY appreciated. Ive been kiting for a long time (since 2006), and had my share of death loops, but seeing exactly what happens in these circumstances instead of guessing at what would happen is extremely valuable. I've seen people take some ambulance rides due to being dragged backwards by suicide leashes during death loops. Sorry you accidentally cut the real line : | ouch

Kudos for trying a deathloop in these conditions ;) Once I had a deathloop with a Core XR2 when one of the front lines snapped. Thank god I could release the safety then. The XR2 didn't react as nicely as the kite you tried it with - I was feeling like Flipper the dolphin, sometimes under water, sometimes above... Never happened since, thank god. So it can happen with certain kites. I guess the trim is important too.

Thanks buddy, this should be mandatory when learning, and then mandatory every 2 years. The killer scenario is when activating the chicken loop release does not do anything, that truly makes you panic. Learning how to survive that can be not only kite-saving, but more importantly life-saving.

Great job, bro! Keep it up. Your videos help a lot to have an idea of what to do in dangerous situations. I only had one experience with the death loop, but the kite touched the water by it self, so i didn't have to do anything. Good winds!

Yeah, man, I felt so stupid with that line) And it was actually BEFORE I properly cut ONE of the lines for the video. I was pointing the knife upwards, that was the mistake) You're right, it was pretty challenging to film such a short video. First loops at around 40 knots were hard to perform)

Anton both of these are excellent. What hurts most in a death loop is panic, either freezing up and getting dragged hard and disoriented, or just grabbing randomly at whatever line is closest. Having a set of simple methods to identify the correct "lever", and depower then stabilize the kite, is better than having 10 knives. And there's just enough in the videos to actually "self configure" both common death loop inducers (centerline cross and bar cross) and get some practice dealing with, neutralizing and correcting both.

Thank you for your great Video on this topic! Also great you commit so mich to your videos, as in that you really get yourself into action and not just talk about it but show it to people - priceless to actually have video proof of the stuff you say/teach! I agree on not relying on one safety aspect completely, However I must say that I always wear my kite knife - eezycut from trilobite. Tried it several times and it cuts through up to 10mm climbing rope easily as through butter - so it might depend on which knife you actually buy. Also tried it with an old flysurfer depowerloop line. Rated for 500kg with an inner dyneema core rated for another 500kg. Cut through that thick rope like butter, even two loops of it and with some force also 4 times that thick rope!

Thanks for your comment, really interesting. Well, I think, I had quite a good knife when filming, and well, yeah, it can probably cut a 4-5 mm dyneema, but when it comes to plastic covered ones... no way, I think. But the most important is that mess and action around you, when you caught by a deathloop. Probably you need a weekly kite knife drill, to get your instincts ready.

Thank you very much Anton for your hard work preparing these videos. I'll share here my death loop experience , which happened just yesterday. The wind stalled and consequently my Core XR3 10m falled into the water in the downwind direction. Then I began to try to relaunch the kite but I noticed that something was not ok. It took me a while to realize that one of the direction lines had entangled with the tip of the kite. A sudden gust of wind later, I was being dragged downwind as the kite started looping uncontrollably. So, despite having seen these two invaluable videos before, I entered in panic mode and committed two near fatal mistakes: first, I used the QR, which of course worked as there weren't any lines messing with the bar or QR system but left them out of my reach without stopping the death loop and second, I hesitated in using the leash as the wind blowed right into the beach with a lot of people, including little kids (WTF?) there. By the time releasing completely the kite was the only option, I was being wildly dragged downwind in and out of the water grasping for air and not being able to find the damm leash, which seems easy but under that circumstances it is not. Luckily, I was close the the shore, with onshore wind, and a very brave dude was nearby and stopped the kite with his hands and the kitemare ended. Other wind direction or further from the shore and that was the end of the story for me. Lessons learned: with a Core kite, death loops can continue after QR despite their BS claims that their safety systems are superior, and more important TRAIN IN YOUR HEAD AND IN REAL LIFE THESE SITUATIONS so you react correctly when needed the most. If I had pulled the correct direction line as in these videos, or released the kite without hesitation, I would have saved myself a really scary experience.

Thanks for sharing your story! Do you remember, how exactly the line went over that tip? I was thinking about discussing this case also in the future. And also the leash topic, yeah probably a short video needed. Now they start producing very short leashes and even in the kite user manual (Core) they say to fix the leash right to the metal spreader bar of the harness, near the hook, so that the QR is always close to riders hands.

Man, thanks a lot for the efforts, cutting your lines just to show us what happens! Very instructive. I would donate if there was a way. I once went under my lines after landing straight downwind, the kite was behind me for a bit and lines getting all around me under and above me, then saw the kite slowly getting tension again. I realeased everything i could realese before it got fully tensioned again.

Hey, thanks! It would be great if you tell about this vid in your kite forum or something as a donation to help promoting it a bit. Yes, getting wrapped with the lines is the question I'll cover someday in the video. It looks and feel terrible, but if you're not in a crazy rush and the kite is getting back into power slowly you can still fix it. Just choose one line among the others, the one you can tell which side of it is pointing towards the kite. Then you just start pulling that side of the line, several meters of it, so that the kite would create tension in this single line only, when it's blown down enough, so it won't tense all the lines around your body, but just one, that you're holding in your hand. It will make the full re-power impossible, the kite will stay hanging on one line, flagged, with no power. And you will be sure, that the line is not wrapped around your neck, since you'll be holding it in your hand. That's what I do myself, hope you'll never need it) Take care! Anton.

This video is fantastic. Had a pretty scary accident where one of my bridles snapped creating a death like loop - slightly more powerful than that shown when you cut your front line here. The effected bridle was the safety line so if I had chickened out I would have the same problem but now with the bar at the end of my leash. Your techniques saved my ass! Hey. It was an RRD Vision 10.5m on a 4-line 2014 Best bar. The bridle snapped where the pulley had been wearing away the bridle line and sent it into a death loop. It was the left bridle that was snapped that is connected to the safety line and so chickening out didn't help. Cheers for your reply. Think it would be the same for any other 4-line kite that has a safety line attached to a single front line.

I had a similar experience on my Cabrinha Switchblade 12m 2013. One of the front lines snapped just at the bridle and I was dragged in a death loop over a km while trying to figure out what was wrong. The snapped line was wrapped up around my leg and my bar all over the place so I had no idea what the cause was. I tried to find out where the wrap was but the loose line really confused me and scared me since I was thinking that it might get tensioned suddenly and cut my leg or hands. After the kite hitting the surface and throwing itself front and back I could see the loose bridle with the help of a fellow kiter. I did not want to release though since I was scared that it was the rescue line that was cut. Only later did I learn that both front lines acts release on the Switchblade so it would have been safe to unleash. If I pulled a bit on any of the three remaining lines the power and tendency to spin only got worse but at the end what did the trick was relly committing to pulling one of the steering lines, so similar to what you teach in the videos. This is exactly what happened to me: I transitioned too fast getting into unintended jump and on landing my kite started to loop. I did not see any entangled lines but maybe I was too stressed. Eventually I had to release it.

Оличное видео. Я пережил уже два таких случая, в одном я удерживал кайт пока он не уперся в набережную (сэфти не сработала после нескольких вращений), в другом - отпустил кайт совсем, потому как мой hydrofoil застрял среди тяг и все выглядело опасно. Если бы я только знал про этот трюк! Спасибо

Ого, приличный стаж!) А про гидрофойл можно поподробней, что за тяги? Да, трюк помогает зачастую, единственное до чего руки не дошли, это проверить сколько нужно вращений кайта, чтобы и он не сработал. Конечно, после 6-7 проворотов можно спокойно это проделать, а вот дальше надо пробовать.

Thanks a lot for the video. Was really helpful. I had a dead-loop experience last week. I haven't seen this video before. Things happened so quick, I was wondering all the time why safety didn't work. Now it explains. I jumped and my chicken loop came out of the hook. I didn't notice that but when saw my bar is far away in a dead loop and connected with my leash only. Was scary as I didn't understand what just happened. I can see if I had a short leash I could probably reach the bar. Is there any way to get out of it if you are on a long leash?

My kite (10 meter) went into a death loop and could not get it to to stop using your technique (18 knots) wind. I had to pull my chicken loop. Do you have any other techniques if this one falls...but thank you for sharing your experience with us have learned a lot.

Those two videos were excellent. Personally I haven't had this one happen to me, but have seen videos of it. What I have had happen a few times is a line going across the canopy (so pulling your steeing line in as well) this causes the same outcome, it would be great to extend your videos to include that. I would guess that your same technique of pulling other steering line to reverse land the kite would still work in this situation?

I had also a Deathloop as my lines tangled up as I did a lunch from a Lagoon from Holbox/Mexico. I noticed the lines are not good so I wanted to land my Kite and out of a sudden I felt so much pull, that I got pulled up 4 meters High and it pulled me 30meters across the sea next to the beach, there were even some rocks. I was unconcious for a minute. But then I pulled quickrelase and after a time my Kite got pushed down luckily. What should I do in Situations like this ?

being a beginner and not sure if the problem resolved itself after the loops, i wanted to proceed with self rescue and wrapped up + secured the steering line on the bar. (.... 1-2 bar lenghts early as i noticed later). a gust came in, the until then stable kite flipped, the tangled line around the bridle on the other side freed up and the kite now looped the other way around. Without any chance to get to the bar now and somehow with the leash under or around the my hook, blocking the last millimiters needed to release completely. stupid as i tend to react in these situations i was really optimistic to be able to get out of my harness... i ended up cutting the rope at the beginning of the safety leash. would it make sense to flag the kite with the safety / one of the front lines instead once it's possible maybe?

Hi! Sorry, I didn't get it right, maybe. You've flagged the kite using one of the steering lines, started to wrap em up and then the kite relaunched? But what actually happened from the beginning? The steering line wrapped around the hook? Or something else, what caused the loop? Yeah, for sure, using the safety line to flag the kite is still the best option. However it depends on how it was tangled, you probably may have some problems also wrapping the safety line, if it crosses-and-blocks with some other lines underwater. Anything possible with 24m of floating ropes! I think, it's really important, after the looping stops, to untangle the lines or any ropes from your body first and be ready to release it completely. Well...however you should always go through that procedure, if you fall and mess with the lines a bit...

Thanks for video. My last deathloop it was bridle caught in wingtip. I remembered you video and tried to pull steering line but I pulled wrong one, kite was looping left and tried to pull left line and wasn't able to backstall it, later on I noticed that I should have pulled in right line instead. Pulling left was too hard with power. It had looped only once or twice I think. would I be able to back stall it from a bridle wingtip? Anyway I ended up releasing whole thing because quick release didn't flag kite.

Hey, thanks for your question. Well, I think that pulling the "other" line will also work when you have a bridle twist. (By the way, what was the kite?) The idea should be the same. Your jammed line increases the angle of attack on one side on the canopy (left side in your case), so if you also increase the angle on the right side, the wing will go beyond the critical angle of attack, will lose the connection with the airflow and stall (lose the lift, in other words), like an airplane wing does. But, yeah, it doesn't jam your QR, so...) it's ok anyway. Well....may be I should film a bridle jamming case also?) Why not. A bit harder to simulate, though....

Yeah, quite a famous video, I've seen it! Well... Hard to say, you've released it soo quickly, man) I won't say, the you shouldn't have done it (otherwise, I'll get hurt a lot by safety fighters))) ), but I would play with lines a bit, if I were you...I haven't spot any obstacles in front of you, was pretty safe. But you did a good job. You've managed to clear the inside-out issue, right? Yeah, I see, the kite cheated you) The bar was looking like the white-side-of-the-bar line is shorter, but in fact, the other line was "shortened" by the bridle. It's a pity....I think you could handle it, if tried the other line...But, yeah...That was not the easiest case!

hi Anton, today something happend to me and i ended up with a cuncosion and a fucked schoulder because the kite death looped, dragging me from the water onto the beach. once it stopped i looked at the bar and what i saw is the following. the power lines were somehow (under the safety) had twisted once around the bar. i had 2 questions, 1: how is this possible? 2: any advise on how to stop it?

Hi, Milad! I haven't got it clear enough. Was it the main depower rope, or those thin lines, those located above the depower rope? What is the bar (manufacturer) that you had the issue with?

Hi anton. It was the maindepower (best t3). However. The kite also was flipped inside out. (It was gusty wind, it had dropped and the kite was stalling wind picked up again, turning the kite inside out. So main depower was around the bar. And the steering lines around the power lines. Using the 2014 best T3.

How about this? If the bar end get's hooked into your harness and you start getting dragged. What if you lean back into a "feet first" drag position? Then the hook opens and bar comes out, and the kite depowers. That would work, right?

Hey, didn't get the idea) I've never tried to body drag with feet in front. They are experiencing a lot of water resistance, is it ever possible to bring them in front of the body?) Well, it could work maybe, but the hook is rotating, since the belts are not rigid. It is always pointing with it top to the power source. That's why you don't get off the hook when doing a deadman trick. Hope I've got your idea right!) Thanks. Anton.

Do you really wanna talk about it? I'd probably give a lot of professional interpreters a good run for their money. That doesn't mean that this video wouldn't be even more helpful as from my kite friends less than a half know English even in a basic level let alone special vocabulary.

We are like speaking different languages. I'm talking about people who live in Russia and once again the least of them know English. Are you telling that in order to progress in kiting they need to spend good several years learning English even though they don't go abroad? As for me it would be easier just to share this video with my friends if it was in Russian. Wind conditions and busy traffic in our spot in SP don't allow to show this technique in the water. So I really don't understand why you are so willing to prove your point....

Антон добрый день. Не давно у меня случился(смертельный луп). Тяга такая, что невозможно подтянуться к планке и ухватить рулевую стропу(ход планки большой). Была секунда когда кайт коснулся воды и я дотянулся до рулевой стропы, но с такой тягой вытянуть ее оказалось невозможно(что я только не делал). Выход один полный отстрел, со всеми последствиям

Добрый день. Ну вопросов нет, если полный отстрел возможен, то надо не думая бросать тряпку. Просто если рулевая захлестнула за крюк, то он попросту невозможен. Однако при этом вся система управления близко и можно тягать любые стропы довольно легко. А что это была за модель кайта в Вашем случае?

Anton Chernyshov это griffin Argo, но планка от другого старого кайта. В общем они совместимы. Планка просто запуталась так что страховка не смогла вытянуться
